  1. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Something that might work better for you than wikipedia is the monster resource of http://www.discogs.com Gargantuan database of bands, releases, versions, etc. Fairly meticulously crowd reviewed and edited. It also works as a want list and marketplace, and sometimes samples.
  2. Steam Summer Getaway Sale

So less than 20 minutes after I read the article about the psychology and exploitation of the summer sale game, I read that Amazon, Gamestop, and a few other retailers are sold out of Xbox One Day Ones. Then in full real time cognizance of how absurd it is, began to panic a little.
  3. Steam Summer Getaway Sale

Yeah, or games doing brisk business still have staff to pay to develop cards. I miss the raffle ticket one where games had holiday achievements and what not. I definitely bought a few $3 and under games just to get an achievement to finish a day's meta. Also, it seems like the crowd only votes for the deepest discount. 40% off Gunpoint vs 75% of Natural Selection 2.
  4. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

http://still-single.tumblr.com/ http://www.yellowgreenred.com/ Some pals from my primary message board review records. In the past I've trashed some records for SS. Genre coverage is wide, but trends obscure by any reasonable definition. 2013 Early Favorites, first 4 are on Spotify, which incidentally is my software recommendation. Free desktop app, with commercials, $9 a month commercial free & mobile. Daughn Gibson - Me Moan (dusty, country tinged crooning. a bit nick cave, a bit chris issak) Connections - Private Airplane (all the best parts of Guided By Voices records) Waxahatchee - Cerulean Salt (dark female singer/songwriter that evolved into bit more of a full band. sort of 90s) Oblivians - new one (best booze soaked Memphis garage back with a bang) Tony Mollina - Dissed and Dismissed (Replacements or Weezer fans) Magic Circle - s/t (the best new Sabbath record) Framtid - Defeat of Civilization (steamrollering Japanese crust/noise)
  5. GTA V

Whoa, wild! I can't believe they won't rerelease a short 2 months later when the new consoles start to drop.
  6. Saturday Morning Streams

Physical Therapy Simulator. I have pretty vivid memories of the game Life & Death. I assumed this was going to be like that. Boy was I wrong. Hilarious cast.
  7. GTA V

Damn. I'm going to need a new console.
  8. (IGN.com)

Ahh, the sort of Stealth/Action/RPG stuff really conjured AP, and a bit of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for me.
  9. R.I.P. Ryan Davis

Tragic. I loved his enthusiasm which could be humorously acerbic, and also avoided the endless PR churn of gaming journalism.
  10. (IGN.com)

I saw that pop up on Steam, and it looks kind of janky, but also like Alpha Protocol, which I have to admit, sort of makes me curious.
  11. Satellite Reign Kickstarter (Syndicate/Syndicate Wars reborn)

I'm reaching a point where I've got a fair amount of money in Kickstarters that have yet to yield anything, excepting the various betas from SPORTSFRIENDS and the Doublefine Documentary. I'm definitely happy that KS has got a bunch of Cyberpunk projects moving.
  12. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

Not to repeat myself, but I think if they met their modest goals they could have made a nice modest game and satisfied their terms. The runaway success is as much curse as blessing. It became a transformative moment for all indie studios, showing a potential third path away from a publisher model that has dogged this group for a long time. The whole process has become more than making 1 game. If this works they will have really created a new option, so to a point, they have to go big. I don't envy them, but I don't think you could find a better company to try it.
  13. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

I think the two games are too divergent to compare budget/scheduling. Adventure games are wall to wall unique assets and content, where MC is going to be more about tilesets and iteration/refinement of the rules.
  14. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

I think if they raised exactly 400k they could have delivered a nice Wadjet Eye style adventure with a tiny team, but the fundraising blowout changed expectations, in the eyes of both the company and the public. Would a longer version of this have satisfied people? http://www.doublefine.com/games/host_master
  15. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

You also see him largely through Cromwell's eyes, who by virtue of being a great pragmatic, and generally cool under pressure isn't awestruck by his grandeur.
  16. I was a snob about audiobooks, but it turns out with an hour one way drive to work, I like them! I'll add it, thanks!
  17. Recently completed video games

Rayman Origins, man this was so much fun, every level is a feast of animation, and incorporates some unique level themed mechanics. That final, bonus level Land of the Livid Dead wore my poor thumb out, and the boss Big Mama is might be my favorite RMO boss.
  18. I'm about to get a new audible credit, do you think the Flamethrowers would make a good listen? It was on my list to read.
  19. Sam & Max Hit the Road's attractions are real?

Carhenge, in Nebraska! Or it's earthier, less crane enabled cousin: www.truckhenge.com
  20. One of the sub-problems with the CK of Game is that there is no agreed standard, and generally we look to narrative content to be that defining element, rather than pure mechanic. i think the counterargument to that is pure mechanic would be chess, and chess isn't the Citizen Kane of Game.
  21. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

The third path here is that they're planning to do it anyway, they're just being sneaky about rolling it out. Wait a year until it's installed, revise XBL experience, now key features like multiplayer, and live updates require check ins.
  22. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

At least we know they can just turn off the DRM stuff that's annoying people, assuming they plan on selling it in those non-green countries. Also, they sold like 27 total 360s in Japan, so no real loss there.
  23. On Video game faces

I think somebody else is working the deep mines of masculine feminine jawline/gay agenda theory (nsfw. nsfanybody really): http://www.femininebeauty.info Unless, you are HE?! Possibly sharing a dark subreddit?! The plot thickens! Like an intensely scrutinized female jaw!
  24. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

A representative from Microsoft was later quoted as saying "If you want somebody's handouts I hear they're celebrating scrounging for scraps in the Video game breadline of that Hooverville, the POORstation 4."
  25. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

This is funny: Xbox One - Day One Console includes a limited edition controller, token code to unlock Day One achievement, premium packaging, and decal.
