Tanukitsune Posted February 5, 2013 So Tom Hall is giving the Kickstarter thing another go... It says it's Commander Keen inspired, but it looks like a normal platform game to me, no pogos or laser guns? It does come with a world creator, which seems to be the main focus of the pitch. Everything seems fine since it seems to be more than an idea this time, but... 30$ for the whole thing? (25$ if you get in early) The tool does seem impressive and maybe it's more of a case that you're supporting a "game maker" than a game, but I can imagine more people will be scared away from paying 30$ for a platform game (that's really a game engine). mikemariano Posted February 5, 2013 I can imagine more people will be scared away from paying 30$ for a platform game (that's really a game engine). In terms of people who just want to buy a game, sure; that's what waiting until a Steam sale is for! But it's a fair price to ask initial backers. They're paying for the game, engine, and bragging rights!
syntheticgerbil Posted February 5, 2013 I've never understood the like for Commander Keen. I've played almost all of them just because I only had either an NES or PC for the longest time to get my platforming fix, and even then I knew the Keen games were pretty mediocre. It has the worst level design type where you just randomly jump around using bad physics to collect junk for points in very uneventful and unforgiving levels. The level layouts are just arbitrary where someone always seemed like they spent about 10 minutes placing some tiles and enemies before moving on to the next level to do the same. I have no idea who the audience would be for these days outside of people who accept subpar platformers based on nostalgia.

Heck, even Double Fine Adventure was just 15$... Although I did see a droid port of an obscure PC game that is terrible ask for 35$... for the Droid or iOS port. But frankly, this game looks like it will be a million times worse than Commander Keen anyway. Why pander to the Keen fans when it's obviously just a generic platform game? This looks no better than Tommy Tronic...

Tanukitsune Posted February 6, 2013 Well, it looks like now you can get the game for 15$ without the editor, but they really want you to get the editor it seems, they had one of those "The first 500 get it cheaper!", which is now the first 5000, which is almost too many?
