ThunderPeel2001 Posted April 15, 2011 Broken Sword II got a bit worse reviews at the time but that was probably because it was "more of the same". I enjoyed both of them very much and honestly don't know which one was better. Broken Sword II is definitely not definitely better than Broken Sword I, though. Sorry to get pedantic here, but the general feeling was definitely the other way around. Not that it's a big deal or anything, it's just that I vividly remember BS2 being praised as being better than the original. At least it was in the the magazines that I read at the time... [pedant] PC Gamer: BS1 got 87%, BS2 got 88%. PC Gaming World: "Broken Sword 2: Smoking Mirror is by far the best adventure Revolution - and indeed, Britain, has produced to date." Edge: BS1: 9/10, BS2: 9/10 Unfortunately I can't find what PC Zone or PC Format originally awarded the game, but I'm pretty certain it was the other way around again. (Kind of sad that all that work has been lost to the ages... Isn't there a magazine review database anywhere?) [/pedant]
Nappi Posted April 15, 2011 (edited) OK, could be. I actually have only played both of them quite recently and my understanding was based on things like Metacritic/GameRankings scores (and especially the review snippets there) and AdventureGamers reviews (which I didn't read but heard afterwards were terrible). My old magazines are somewhere collecting dust as well as scornful looks from my mother who thinks they are just wasting space, which they are. Circle of Blood (didn't even know it existed with this name) Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror Edited April 15, 2011 by Nappi
ThunderPeel2001 Posted April 15, 2011 True, but MetaCritic and GameRankings are terribly inaccurate when it comes to old games because they can only grab a few scores for them. (And a lot of the time they're blogs or whatever.) I wish there was some sort of database, even MobyGames doesn't have PC Gamer/PC Format/PC Zone scores. toblix Posted May 5, 2011 (edited) Finished this last night, and was pretty pleased with it overall. The iOS controls are a bit wonky in both this game and the predecessor, but you get used to it. I'm so uncertain if I'd finish this if I picked it up today as a new adventure. I'm completely unable to objectively evaluate it and not consider the thick layer of nostalgia I've applied to it over the years. I love that there's a ton of custom hand-drawn animation for everything. The final puzzle with the giant wheels was a bit tedious. However, having finished it, I was hugely and massively disappointed to discover that the iPad version of Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered... does not exist! I'm forced to play in that ridiculous 2x mode with weirdly blurred graphics. If I'm going to play the game with the graphics blurred that way I'm going to have to meter my sequel or my eyes will fall out! I'm torn between just playing the old version on the PC, or waiting for Revolution to publish an iPad version. I tried asking @charlescecil, but didn't hear anything back. Does anyone remember if the iPad/universal versions of BS1 or BS2 were released later than the iPhone version? Edited May 5, 2011 by toblix
ThunderPeel2001 Posted May 5, 2011 I'm sure a remastered version of BASS is coming... at least, I hope it is. What did you make of the achievements? I read somewhere that BS2: RM has achievements, is that true? Also: I don't think prequel means what you think it means

As for the achievements, I only noticed those after I had finished the game. Apparently you have to "activate" Game Center or some shit, so none of them registered. I'm almost tempted to play it once more. Also: you do know BS1 came out after BS2, right?
ThunderPeel2001 Posted May 5, 2011 The BASS that's out is remastered, only just for the tiny iPhone screen. Yes, I meant for other platforms. I'm waiting for the PC version myself, but I imagine the iPad version is just around the corner. Also: you do know BS1 came out after BS2, right? Only in a world where time moves backwards.
