Serious Sam HD

Recommended Posts

Only played it for a short while. But it looks like it's really Serious Sam First Encounter with better textures, and improved models for the monsters. The levels appear mostly untouched. The bobbing is still as extreme as before (really looks weird now). But there is one thing which sucks, 5.1 support. The sound positioning is really shit. I bought it for 10 pounds from Get Games, which is a better price for this game than the $20 steam charges (it's still a steam-only game).

Even though I just beat the game over the summer, I can't imagine playing with updated graphics. So much of the appeal for me was how much of a pure game it was. There was something so imaginatively abstract about the chunky old graphics, and I can't imagine how adding "realism" to that could improve the formula.

That said, Serious Sam, especially The Second Encounter, was one of the most mind-blowingly awesome games I've ever played. Anyone who hasn't played yet and can't find a copy of the original anywhere should pick this up.

Actually, you barely notice it. Only a mad man would get close enough to the monsters to really enjoy the higher quality.

Anyway, it still plays the same. I just love how predictable the game is. When I enter a a new room/area I just know that a shit load of enemies will be spawn both in front and behind me.

Haha. And then there are the massive open areas where the music kicks in and you start to see dark pixels miles off on the horizon flocking towards you.

It's so good. And really pretty, too. The crazy scale to everything make the environments more memorable than many more technically advanced games.

I really want this game, but for what I could probably find for $5 somewhere used, $20 seems a bit steep. Especially given the game's age. I'll probably shell out when it goes down to $10 or $15. The co-op in 2nd Encounter was brilliant, so I'm excited for that at least.

I bought it from getgamesgo.com for 10 pound (found that via RPS), which is a fair 11 euros. 20 euros is simply insane high for a texture+model update (because I already own the original).

I'm playing this on 360 while drinking a bunch of beer and it's the perfect game to play while getting drunk. It's like playing the original Doom in HD. The pleasures you get from it are so basic. I'm not sure it would be fun to play while sober, though. Anyone care to weigh in on that?

It's not bad. You have to be in the mood for it, but I've certainly spent some sober time with it and enjoyed that.
