I lost my VMUs! What am I to do?

Recommended Posts

Dang..... I was just about to play with my Dreamcast for the first time in ages and.....

I noticed the controllers had no VMUs....

I've searched high and low and I just can't find them....:frusty:

Frankly, I don't think it's much of a loss of the game saves of the games I've beaten, since if I ever play them again I won't just fight the last boss, I'll play from the start!:erm:

But.... I'll need a VMU to play my unbeaten games....

Are they rare or expensive in Europe?

Is there an alternative? *cough*"Not" emulation? *cough*:shifty:

Something that plays the original GD-Roms and the VMU games?

I'm still at my office at this unholy hour but when I go back home I'll check if I have more than one.

define expensive

Do they cost much more than they did originally? The same? Or less?

Frankly, I don't remember how much they cost....:erm:

There's a shop here that sells them for 15 euros new, and 12,50 euros used.

I know a store in town that might have them... I'll post on Monday or Tuesday to say if they do or don't...

Wow! For once they are cheaper in Europe! If I can't find one at retro game store I'll probably get from ebay...

The bad news is.... the retro game store is now a kid's clothes store... I guess I'll get them on Ebay then....

Oh yeah, you'll end up paying more for the two watch batteries than the VMUs themselves. That's the real steal.

Oh yeah... I remember them costing a lot back in the day... Do they still that much? Battery costs have gone down ever since everything has rechargeable lithium batteries.:erm:

Luckily you'll only need batteries to play the goofy VMU minigames and use the VMU's seperately from the system, they work fine without them if you're just saving games and such.

(I've been playing a lot of Dreamcast games recently, Power Stone, Rival Schools, Zero Gunner 2, Soul Calibur...so much fun)

I recently had to buy the CR2032 for a Super Nintendo game with a dead battery. While I remember them costing $7 in the year of 9/9/99, they are $4 now. So it's not as bad as it was. Of course for the VMU, you have to buy two.

Yeah I don't think I have any Dreamcast games these days that actually have downloadable minigames.

Well, official VMU's have 200 blocks if I'm not mistaken, and off the top of my head Sonic Adventure uses between 15-20, Project Justice is like 5 or 6 blocks, Shenmue is 80 (!!) and Crazy Taxi/Skies of Arcadia are both around the 20-25 area.

So even with just five games, you're already using 75% of your vmu. If you have more than five games you might want to think about getting more than one memory unit.

I have quite a collection, but only a handful unbeaten... But Shenmue II is one of them... So I guess I will need more than one? XP

I'd buy as many as is reasonable for your particular situation. You're asking the wrong guy though, I have about fifteen scattered throughout my apartment, most of which are crammed full of DC goodness. If I was to be perfectly honest I would tell you to buy as many as possible, forgoing food for the joyous nourishment of days of Sega gone by...

The seller had a special of 3 for 10€, I'm hoping that should last me a while, until my backlog become more manageable I'm only playing unbeaten games...

No replays for me..
