toblix Posted October 16, 2008 So, now that I've all the current-gen consoles, what should be my strategy for picking which console to buy cross-platform games for? I've sort of developed an addiction for the Xbox achievement "plop!" popup thing, and I've the impression PS3 versions are often worse than their Xbox 360 conterparts. Are the developer issues with the PS3 resolved? Currently I'm only considering buying PS3 exclusives on the PS3, but who knows? Whadddayasay, Idle Forums? Chris Posted October 16, 2008 I don't mean this as a broad slam on the system, but what reason is there to buy a multiplatform game on PS3 unless you prefer the controller?
Roderick Posted October 16, 2008 I actually thought the versions didn't differ at all that much, so any preference would boil down to the controller and perhaps the achievements. And since I love the controller, and moderately enjoy achievements... it's 360 for me.

Just generally speaking, you might as well keep as many games as possible in the same place, so to speak. I mean, that's more important with multiplayer games than single-player games, but Xbox Live is such a complete service overall that there doesn't seem to be a reason not to have it there in the background--again, excepting controller preferences. Plus, Xbox 360 seems much more frequently to be the lead development platform on most multiplatform titles.
toblix Posted October 16, 2008 That's also my impression too, as well, that it's easier to squeeze the performance out of the 360, and that cross-platform PS3 releases suffer as a result. So I wasn't wrong.
miffy495 Posted October 17, 2008 I mostly get a PS3 version of a multiplatform game if it's cheaper or more convenient. Burnout, more convenient. The Darkness, a good $15 cheaper. Lego Batman, I hadn't turned the PS3 on in a while and figured it needed some love. Of course, just today I bought Dead Space for the PS3 because my 360 red ringed last night and I actually want to play the thing, so that could be a motivation as well. Conversely to what Remo said, if you do keep as many games as possible in the same place, if that place goes to shit you're left gameless for a while. I feel it'd be better to diversify. Especially for single-player focused games on the PS3, as the point about Live is very true.
Cigol Posted October 17, 2008 I don't have a 360, I have a PC and PS3, so I rarely if ever have to consider this question. The only time it might pop up is with something like Fallout 3 or Call of Duty 4 as I inherently dislike playing first person shooters on a console, and can't understand why people do it. Yes, that might have been a poor attempt at a shit multi-layered joke. Thanks. I've the impression PS3 versions are often worse than their Xbox 360 conterpartsNot to say the criticism isn't valid, but I've played and bought several multiplatform titles which are supposedly worse than their XBOX 360 equivalents and it never once dawned on me. I imagine in many cases it'd be like telling someone who's playing Oblivion on a console how the PC experience is 500x better due to the addition of hundreds of brilliant user-made modifications. It's true, but it doesn't necessarily diminish the experience they are having.

Yeah, I'm not saying that PS3 versions are shit, but that I have the impressions that they're slightly worse than the Xbox versions. I've never seen a comparison myself, it's just a... feeling I have.
Scrobbs Posted October 17, 2008 Eurogamer have done lots of comparisons. The 360 versions tend to be better.
