Found the power cord for my PsP any game recommednations?

Recommended Posts

I haven't played my psp since loco roco came out, as I lost my power cord. Can anyone recommended any games, saw WT and miffy talking about MG:acid on another thread, not convinced by the concept but reckon I'll give it a go as it is dead cheap now. Any FF fans played crisis core and got an opinion on that?

Have yet to play Crisis Core, but at work two days ago we got a memo from head office telling us to drop the prices of Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo (both games), and Killzone down to $10 immediately. I picked up Daxter and Ratchet on my way home because I'd been meaning to for a while anyway, and Killzone just for the hell of it.

Ratchet simply is a Ratchet and Clank game. No compromises were made, and you can make of that what you will. I say this because the game is actually hindered a bit by the fact that they gave you all of the moves from a dual-analogue game on a single-analogue console. Move with the analogue stick, strafe with the d-pad, rotate the camera with the shoulder buttons. If you want to crouch, press both shoulder buttons. It can get to be a bit much, and the strafing really takes a lot of getting used to. Pity since it came in so handy on the PS2/3 versions of the game, which I loved. Still, the game is just as good, control compromises aside, and I'm having quite a bit of fun with it.

Daxter I bought not so much because of familiarity with the series (Uncharted was the first Naughty Dog game I ever played) but because I remembered so much of the buzz when it came out about how this was the game that would prove the PSP to be a worthy console. It's good. Same camera issues as Ratchet, and insta-death water always irritates me (especially when you fall in because of an unavoidable attack combo animation... :() but I would recommend it as platformers of the traditional, non-gun-focused variety are few and far between lately, good ones even more so.

Killzone has surprised me. I remembered buying an issue of PSM back in the day which had the GHII demo on it and also a demo disk for Killzone. Gave it a try then, because why the hell not? It was free, right? I quite enjoyed the demo but couldn't see myself spending full retail on it, so I forgot about it until changing the price stickers on it Monday morning. Figured that for $10 it's kinda hard to go wrong and went for it. Really, really good. The shooting is surprisingly elegant and uses a combination of the older Metal Gear style and even a bit of stop n' pop which surprised me as this game predated Gears by several months. Controls are fluid and intuitive, (with the exception of double-tap L for an evasive roll) the game performs well, and looks really good too. A really solid choice and a pleasant surprise.

Other things to pick up if you haven't are (highest recommended have a (!)):

Crush

Every Extend Extra

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (!)

GTA: both Liberty and Vice City Stories

God Of War: Chains of Olympus (!)

Patapon (!)

Cheers Miffy, haven't heard of lots of those so will go and read up on them. I forgot there was a GoW on the PsP that is a must.

My PSP is buggered, and I've got a load of games I haven't got round to flogging on ebay yet.

Lumines, GTA: LCS, Tales of Eternia, Arcade Treasures (was free before you point and laugh), LocoRoco, Wipeout: Pure, Mercury, and Exit.

If any take your fancy, let me know.

  • Bomberman Land**
  • Cave Story (free but your PSP must be hacked)
  • Everybody's Golf 2*
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • Guilty Gear Judgment*
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (blatant soundtrack bias!)
  • Lumines*
  • Loco Roco
  • Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G*
  • Sid Meier's Pirates!
  • Syphon Filter: Combat Ops***
  • Tekken: Dark Resurrection*
  • Ultimate Ghosts 'n' Goblins

* Also good in multiplayer

** Shit in anything but multiplayer

*** Multiplayer only

Of all of those, God of War, Loco Roco, Tekken and Ultimate Ghosts 'n' Goblins are the absolute essentials I'd say.

Note that you can use the XLink Kai service to play "local only" multiplayer games with distant friends over the Internet. I've not tried this yet, but it's straight forward enough I believe.

Surprised no one has mentioned Echochrome yet. It's worth a look ginger.

Good luck figuring out which levels are mine ;) Nice to see Crush mentioned too, another one of mine

Right. I keep forgetting there was a PSP version as well. Been playing it on PS3, and yes, it is very good. Give it a go.

If you're a fan or retro gaming, the PSP will be your best friend since you more retro games than you can shake a stick at!

If you don't mind importing, the Parodius, Lifeforce and Twinbee collections are worth getting too!

I also love:

-Me & My Katamari

-Dead Head Fred

-Silent Hill Origins

-Popolocrois

-Gurumin

Space Invaders Extreme

Playing it now (of course I brought some video games with me to London!) and it is great, especially if you love retro remakes like Pac Man:CE and other similar, shiny games like Geometry Wars. Didn't think I'd like a Space Invaders game but there you go.

I was on the fence about Dead Head Fred. Seems like one of those "such a good idea, if only they'd made a good game around it" situations. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but need some convincing. What's the good word?

You basically run around beating up monsters and you take their heads to gain new powers, I thought it was a blast! It also has a bit of a sense of humor which is always good!

It's pretty cheap now, so I think it's worth a shot!

Copious lack of any racing game suggestions--which I'm more than guilty of, seeing as I love them. I'd suggest either SEGA Rally (if you prefer 3rd person racers) or the first PSP Ridge Racer (if you prefer 1st person driving). Personally, I loved them both.

I've tried WipeOut Pure but it just doesn't seem to click for me as a portable game. I've also given the recent RACE Driver 3 PSP game a try, but that's complete arse and nothing like the console versions; I imagine the design discussion went something like this:

"So, how're we going to make the best racing game on PSP?"

"Make it as FUCKING ANNOYING and pointlessly test-driven as Gran Tourismo, but with the added benefit of that shitty analogue nub for control!"

"Brilliant--start printing money!"

Tis balls, I tell thee. :(

And I didn't suggest Echochrome as it really didn't do it for me when I tried it a few weeks ago. (Sorry, Ben.)

After 6 months of ownership and all told, I'm not in love with the PSP. It's good, but certainly not essential. I'm giving serious thought to selling mine and getting a DS Lite instead. I miss my DS Phat quite a lot... ;(
