Medieal 2:TW - Worth playing?

Recommended Posts

I'm not usually a big RTS fan but absolutely adored Rome Total WAr, when Medieval 2 came out I immediately purchased it played it a bit and found my self not getting into it, it just didn't feel as satisfying, so I gave up on it.

Just wondering if anyone played it and can give me their opinion as to whether it is worth giving another go?

Heh.. I actually bought Medieval 2: Total War over a year ago, played it a bit and gave up on it. Yesterday I started a new English campaign.

This time around I feel much more compelled to keep on playing. I think the main reason I stopped playing the first time around was that I got a horrible start. Now I'm doing much better although the Pope keeps harassing me for attacking Scotland and France is besieging one of my cities with a huge army. As far I can remember I truly started enjoying Rome: Total War (and original Medieval) only after I got past the initial difficulties.

So I'd say you probably should give it another chance. If you loved Rome: Total War then I see no reason why you couldn't like this as well, unless you dislike the medieval setting or something. However, I have only played it a little so far so I can't really make any extensive comparisons with Rome: Total War yet.

IRL or in game?

MTW is a game I adore but hate in equal measure. It requires so much of your attention and dedication to get the most out of it - the middle-to-end game is very hard indeed. Just so much to keep track of that it becomes overwhelming and I eventually give up and lose all frame of reference forcing me to start over the next time I get the itch.

IRL it's just the priests. Gaming is a form of escapism for me.

I enjoy the campaign much more now. I had forgotten about the missions the Pope and Council of Nobles gives the player (if I recall correctly there were similar ones in Rome but not in original Medieval). I feel like they are really trying to give me a push to a right direction.

I'd advice you to pay some attention to finance and diplomacy though. I have no allies and I'm currently fighting with 3-4 for factions. I'm not actually bathing in money either. Capturing cities helps though.

Can't wait to be able to try my luck conquering the New World.

I had exactly the same experience Ginger. Loved M:TW, then R:TW and then R:TW:BI. Waited with baited breath for M2...and played it for about a week. Didn't find it anywhere near as compelling, in fact I re-installed R:TW the other day to give it another go.
