SiN Posted May 18, 2008 It's been a year-and-a-bit in the making, but Smiley's Shooty Adventure is complete, and subsequently, my indie dev company Caffeine Monster Software has officially launched. I'm all sorts of happy right now! Smiley is an arena shooter that knows what old-skool is all about. Yes, there have been plenty of arena shooters, but Smiley does retro right with pixel art, bleeps and blops for sound sfx, and tonnes of trippy pixel effects! The enemies are fun and interesting, the levels and game modes plentiful. Best of all, you can play 2 player co-op for all of 'em. Not enough PC games do this I feel. Download the demo for Windows or Mac from here. It comes with 15 (out of the 80) missions from the campaign mode, playable in co-op too. Survival, Speedrun and Versus modes are locked out. The full game is just $10. Try the demo ... I'd love to hear your thoughts! SiN
miffy495 Posted May 19, 2008 Grats on getting it out the door man! I'm downloading now, I'll make sure to play before I go to sleep tonight and let you know what I think.
miffy495 Posted May 19, 2008 Ok, so I just had a few goes at it, and it was quite enjoyable indeed. The only gripe I have is that using my mouse to aim seemed a tad laggy. It may be intentional, but it did distract a bit when I wasn't shooting where I thought I should be. Led to a couple of deaths that I thought were unjustified. On that note though, love the little "whaugh hah hah hah" upon dying. So yeah. I probably shouldn't be trying an arcade game when I'm as tired as I am and my twitch reflexes are poor, but that's what I took away from my first shot at the demo. Well done, sir. SiN Posted May 20, 2008 Glad you enjoyed it! It's a funny thing about shmups ... it's one of those genres with a billion different control schemes and everyone has their own preference. If you find the mouse movement a bit laggy, maybe try the "Keyboard+Mouse 1" control scheme, where you move with WASD and shoot with the mouse. The movement feels a bit more direct, but ultimately yeah, there is a smudge bit of lag. I guess that's how I designed the "physics" of the game. SiN
ThunderPeel2001 Posted May 21, 2008 I'll give it a go when I get some time! Great job on making and actually completing a game. That's a pretty major achievement in itself
Noyb Posted May 24, 2008 Got some press in RPS: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1799
SiN Posted May 27, 2008 @Noyb: Yeah, I noticed that. Very bloody pleased, especially as Kieron wrote the piece ... I'm a bit of a fanboy, you see. And he wrote it in his "NGJ" style, which made it even better. Also, I love the last comment, "it is awesome". Maybe I should put that on the site. @ThunderPeel: Thanks! Yeah, I've been doing this for more than 10 years now, and it's still quite a challenge to get a game done. My decision to go indie just made things harder. I put tonnes more polish into this than I normally do for my games, plus all the work setting up the site, getting the paypal system going, registration, etc, etc. Glad that's all done now though. Guest lovefcs09 Posted June 23, 2008 3.5 Problems occurred in the arrangement of the compositionLook at the following composition selected from students’ writing:Should Students Take a Part Time Job or Not silkroad online goldIn recent years, taking part-time job is very popular on the campus, more and more students spend more time taking part-time job, and this phenomenon causes a lot of hot argument, is it right or not? In my opinion, we can’t say it is right or wrong directly, because the reason is complex. On the other hand, many students take part-time job in order to reduce the burden of their families because their families have not enough money to support them. So their action is reasonable. We can not say it is not right, as to those students whose families are not very poor, some of them taking part-time job just want to practice in the society and gain some experience. Earning money is not their main purpose; we cannot say it is right, either. It is not conformed to the Standard English writing. Firstly, in the above text, there is no definite idea. We cannot get the author’s attitude after reading the text. In this sense, this composition is a failure. To English-speaking people they tend to choose one aspect to illustrate. Secondly, the whole text just has one paragraph. Generally speaking, an English composition consists of three parts: the introductory paragraph, the body and the conclusion. So the text should be rewritten as the following:maple story goldIn recent years, taking part-time job is very popular on the campus. More and more students spend more time taking part-time jobs. This phenomenon causes a lot of hot argument. Is it right or not? In my opinion, it is right based on the following reasons.FFXI GilFirstly, they can reduce the burden of their families, because their families just cannot afford the tuition. In addition, where their life expenditure comes from? Considering this, many students may choose to take part-time jobs to reduce their financial pressure.dofus kamasSecondly, by taking part-time jobs, students could gain more social experience. Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it. There is always some gap between what we know from textbooks and what we can do in the real world, and social practice helps us build the bridge over it. If you are a qualified student, working as a private teacher will enable you to test out the theories acquired in classroom and to guide you to make your own discoveries. From the above mentioned, we can see that taking part-time jobs has many advantages. It is beneficial to the college students. So do not hesitate, join in the line! The rewritten text is clearer than the original one, after reading the above text. We can easily understand the author’s opinion with sufficient supporting arguments. In addition, the text is fully conformed to the three-part model of English writing.world of warcraft gold

SiN Posted June 23, 2008 Thanks ThunderPeel! After working on it for a year+, it gets kinda difficult to remain objective, but going on the feedback I've been getting, I apparently know a thing or two about designing games. And lets not forget to thank lovefcs09 again, who was kind enough to remind you to try this out. SiN
