Back in The Game

Today I hooked up my 360 for the first time since moving (before Christmas), and continued playing Splinter Cell: Double Agent. It's awesome being back!

Hooray! Welcome back to the fold. I look forward to much comical disillusionment and "------? More like ------!" thoughts in the future. :mock:

Also, maybe you can give me a verdict here. Is Double Agent a hell of a lot harder than Chaos Theory or do I just suck at it for some reason? I got stuck on that level where you have to come up through the ice at the start and just kinda gave up. Do you find it more difficult or is there just something weird about the way I'm playing it? For the record, I beat Chaos Theory without any real difficulty. The first Splinter Cell as well, though I never played Pandora Tomorrow.

Yay!

I finally got a copy of Okami for PS2 (after going round every shop in town and finding none I simply ordered it. Sorry highstreet shops, but you are your own worst enemy).

I'm loving it. Or rather I was loving it until it went TOTALLY MEAT CIRCUS on me, what with Grandpa Fucking Orange and his Fucking Konohuna Fucking Shuffle. suddenly I cannot perform an action adequately that I had no problem doing before. Oh and this time it is timed, down to about 2 seconds whereas before I could take as long as I like. Do I suck at the game? If so then I will happily admit it while I pound your stupid face into the floor.

Erm, no not you. Not sure who I was talking to then. Sigh.

I'm just kidding with you because you are describing the level that is the absolute first one, not counting the two stupid-ass tutorial levels which had me worrying about my graphics card the first time I played it.

Anyway, I don't really find DA to be any harder than the others. I always spend an insane amount of time on these games because I move so slowly around, deathly afraid to be spotted or heard or noticed. As a result, I've probably been spotted less than 20 times total in all my hours playing the various Splinter Cell games. I play this one like I did the others, and like I played the Commando games of yore: I follow a guy, wait till he's alone, grab him, take him back to the pile of knocked-out guards and choke him onto it. After having progressed to the point where leading the guards back to the guard-pile is getting to be a chore, I just find another dark corner and start a new pile. Also, I have to complete all the little sub-objectives.

Thanks. It probably has something to do with the fact that it's the only one I've ever attempted to play on a console. All of the others were done on PC, and the precision really helped.

Really? I found precision to be almost irrelevant compared to the dual-analog combo controls. Don't you adjust your movement speed with the mouse wheel or something on PC?

Yeah. I really don't know what kept me from getting into Double Agent. Oh well. I'm sure I'll give it another go sooner or later. GTA IV is keeping me plenty busy at the moment anyway.

Yup, have it for 360. I know it was different (reviews mostly said "more traditional") on the older consoles. Who knows, I may have done a hell of a lot better if I'd had that version.

I think the concept of different versions of the same game is.. I dunno, horrible, or something. I have no problem with completely different versions, like portable versions, where the games can even be different genres, but to make two games with the same name, same main story and same gameplay, but with different levels... why didn't they just make two completely different games, with different names as well?

I finally finished Okami. About 120 hours. I saw people complaining about the length and the false endings, but I was OK with that because I didn't want it to end.

Oh, and I disagree that it felt artificially inflated. In fact I'd say it was the only game of this scale that felt like it wasn't inflated at all. When you have several hundred years of Japanese mythology to draw upon, content doesn't have to be stretched really.

I teared up a bit in one of the final scenes.
