Guitar Hero 3: Thumbs Tour Group

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that quite a few of us have GH3, so I thought I'd help advertise the Idle Thumbs Tour Group that n0wak set up:

http://www.guitarhero.com/tour_groups/204945

To join you just need to register on the site and then go into Guitar Hero III > Options > Select "www . guitarhero . com" and you'll get a 12 digit code to enter into the website. This will link your online account with your XBL account.

We're currently ranked 2,635, but if Miffy links his account we'll probably be second, or something.

I tried linking my account, actually, but the site wouldn't confirm me because the servers were too busy or some such bollocks. Now that I assume they're not, I'm thinking I should try again. I'll do so sometime before the end of the weekend, I hope.

Ok, so I've entered in my code now, but I'm not entirely convinced my account is properly registered. I've got something like 2600 groupies and "Rock God" status according to the site's upper left user info thing, but it won't say much else. My user profile page, for example, is still blank. Also, despite the fact that I'm registered with the Thumbs tour group, the groupie count is a little less than half of what the site tells me I have on my own, so I'm assuming mine haven't been added yet. Do I need to play the game again for it all to get synced up or what's the deal?

...also, the thumb group ranking is about 500 higher than you said it was. Is that my doing or is something else at work here? This site is confusing as hell.

EDIT: upon checking about 3 hours later, I'm now fully confirmed on the site. Tour group groupie rating is the same though, so I'm not sure what the deal is with that. Does it average all our groupies? Total? How's it work? I do think we can crack the top 2000 groups though. Only about 100 off. Seeing that I'm #2166 on expert has given me a personal mission to get into the top 2000 of that as well. This site is evil, what with it's showing me how I compare and making me want to play more. Bastards.

Hurrah! I know there's others here, too... Anyone else want to join?

The whole ranking system is a bit retarded, though. There's 1,565 members of the number one tour group, so no wonder they've got 4,000,000 groupies. Pretty stupid if you ask me. They should divide it by the number of members so it's even. Fools

Still, saying that, looking at the other teams, I think we could crack the top 1000, maybe even 500... but they should really sort out the leader board so that number of members doesn't guarantee you a top ranking.

Actually, from the looks of things, I think the groupie number is an average, or at least close to it. Our groupies in the Thumbs tour group are about 7 more than our 4 scores averaged. Maybe the group as it's own entity gets some extra stuff, but most of it is based on the average?

Hmmm. I don't know. All the scores are a bit confusing to say the least. That group with 1,565 members has a groupie score of 4,000,000... how does that work?

I'm currently trying to get one of the moderators to consider changing the way the rankings are organized, or at least have a separate table where the score is divided by its members...

Thanks for your quick reply.

You could easily level the playing field while allowing people to keep large groups by dividing a group's score by the number of members, thus allowing those with smaller teams to compete.

If there are millions of players, but only thousands that want to be grouped together, then there must be hundreds of thousands who don't, according to your estimations.

Most people who join a large group do it because they'll be on a winning team, not because they're in any way connected to the other thousands of people.

As the majority of players are in smaller teams, it seems only fair to cater to them, otherwise it's impossible for anyone to ever really increase their rankings without having to get more members... which has nothing to with being rewarded for actually getting better at playing the game.

If this is all still an impossibility, why not have two leagues: One where "might makes right" and everyone's score is added together, and one where the team score is divided by its members... making everyone happy.

At the moment it is obviously quite pointless for a small group of friends to hope to ever get a high ranking.

Please consider all that I've said, I hope you do something to make GH3's online experience more satisfying to the majority of players.

Thanks a lot,

- Johnny W

I'm not sure if using average groupie count (if that is what you mean) would be any better, as unskilled players wouldn't be able to contribute, however little, anymore. Instead, they would significantly cripple the smaller groups by joining them, which would undoubtedly take a lot of the fun out of the whole experience. For example, if I decided to join your group right now, you would probably be all :shifty:, as I would most likely suck enormously.

In addition, with this system, a group of three best guitar hero players in the world would essentially be weaker than a group with just the best player.

Yeah, but that's the nature of competition. You couldn't have a bowling team where one team had 1,565 players, and as such, 1,565 goes each turn, versus a team with 4 players, who had four goes each turn. It makes competition pointless.

Competition will never be 100% fair, but it can be made more even so you are rewarded by getting better at playing the game.

I also found out that the single player rankings on the website are based on how many times you play GH3 rather than your score...
