How the hell do I play the game in offline mode?

I am reading my mail and answering it.

Lemme see how that offline thing works... you have to unplug the network cable... and then a window pops up asking you if you want to play in offline mode. You say yes.

Did you buy your copy at a store or download via Steam? If you're getting it through Steam you need to make sure HL2 is 100% fully downloaded onto your drive. Steam works by sending the game to your computer as you need it - it downloads in the background as you play - but obviously that can't happen if you're offline, so they need to make sure you have the whole game before attempting it to play it offline. Don't want you running into a missing level or something.
