Marek Posted September 29, 2004 Tell me, is "Revenge is a dish best served cold" actually an English proverb, or is it (as I always thought) a fictional Klingon proverb? I just really need to know, since yesterday I saw it out of Klingon context, and now I'm wondering if the proverb was there all the time, or if pop culture has in fact invented a proverb that was then assimilated into common language. Jake Posted September 29, 2004 I thought claiming it was a Klingon proverb was just a joke made for Kill Bill, as I've never heard that in Star Trek ¬ ¬
Roderick Posted September 29, 2004 I've seen it mentioned in Star Trek lore a few times. But to my recollection, it's an actual english proverb. But then again, Klingons were here long before I was, so I could be mistaken.
edlglide Posted September 29, 2004 I have no idea, although I -think- it's an actual English proverb........but even if it isn't it really wouldn't be a surprise. Pop culture has added stuff like that to our vernacular quite often in the past 40 or so years.
Chris Posted September 29, 2004 Man, it's so lame that there's confusion about this.

Intrepid Homoludens Posted September 29, 2004 It's an old English proverb: Revenge is a dish best served cold. - pointing to the ellaborated planning of some revenges. The earliest well-known example of this proverb in print is "La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid" from the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782) by Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderios de LaClos. The saying exists in many cultures, including Sicilian, Spanish and Pashtun, making its ultimate origin difficult to determine. The modern English wording is attributed to Dorothy Parker. - http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Revenge
