I also practice inbox zero, but not with the specific intent of doing so. It's just what I've always done. I can't leave messages or emails for later unless I literally can't spare the seconds it would take to look at them. I won't necessarily respond in a timely manner but I'll at least see it.

Sometimes the act of laughing at a thing is enough to be considered "being a dick about it", especially if you're laughing AT them and not WITH them. Maybe there's not any malicious intent, but I don't think anyone really enjoys it when people point at them and laugh which is sort of what's going on here. I do agree there is a difference between being insulting to women because they're women and being insulting to fan art because it's unusual but that doesn't make one right and another wrong. Like I said, the article doesn't flat out say that the community of people who like doing this are freaks. I understand that there's a joking tone, but it's also a mocking one because nothing positive was said. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying it's weird or unusual because I don't think those words alone are insults. Quite the contrary, I like weird stuff. But saying "Holy shit, what is wrong with people?", even in a joking manner, without any positive follow up leaves me with the impression that you're just making fun of people for being different which is never cool. You're more than welcome to disagree but that's how the article came across to me. And I want to be clear, I'm not trying to shame Danielle or anyone else. Consider it more of a cautionary warning that your intended action is not always going to be the perceived one.

I'm actually not a fan of that piece. I know there's been a lot of joking lately on the podcast about Sonic fan art and stuff, but I have to say it makes me feel kind of uncomfortable. Not because of the subject matter (because frankly Sonic porn is NOT the strangest thing you can find) but rather it's the idea of mocking people for their interest in a thing. Maybe erotic Sonic art is a weird thing to most people but so what? You're not likely to find it unless you're specifically looking for it, and at that point you're going out of your way to ridicule something. We talk a lot here about how disgusted we are when people rail on women or minorities. Why is it ok to make fun of people for liking and making weird Sonic stuff? Her article doesn't flat out call people freaks but there is a tone of "eww, look at this gross stuff that's probably going to happen". Danielle recognized this on twitter and apologized for kink-shaming so I don't hold anything against her at all but the whole concept makes me unhappy. This is coming from someone who doesn't really care for Sonic fan art either. I've probably made fun of it myself in the past but thinking about this has made me realize it's something I need to stop doing.

Yeah they are.

I really want to hear Danielle speak Mandarin. In her accent.

Introverts, social anxiety and multiplayer games
SecretAsianMan replied to kaputt's topic in Video Gaming
I go out of my way to do that in games. If I see someone who's clearly new and not just purposely trying to be an idiot I'll try to fill them in on some of the basics without flat out telling them what they should be doing (unless it's a very specific thing like standing in a certain spot). I always try to remember that at some point I was a newb and in general I just enjoy helping people. It's not a new idea by any means, but if you're nice to other people, odds are they'll be nice to you too and everyone will have a better time. -
I generally like it, but Chrome is a memory hog. It gets way worse when you have a bunch of tabs open. There are extensions that can do things like unload tabs if they're not used after a certain amount of time which may help.

It sounds like maybe the guy had previously written or said some other stuff that was offensive, but that is still crazy.

What's freaking me out is that the inanimate objects also have faces on them with the same fidelity of the humans. It would be like a real baby holding a rattle with a tiny realistic human face on it instead of a cartoon smile.

Yeah I miss Wily too. That's still my mental image of you even though I've met you in real life.

Introverts, social anxiety and multiplayer games
SecretAsianMan replied to kaputt's topic in Video Gaming
Also going to echo the introvert/social anxiety distinction. I usually only talk in games if someone else talks first, and even then I sometimes don't. I will of course talk when playing with friends. On the Xbox I used to not even plug in my headset unless I knew at least one person. On PC I will sometimes even go to the length of making the excuse that I have to plug in my mic, then wait a few seconds before I start talking even though my mic has been plugged in the whole time and I just haven't been using it. -
As soon as Chris said the words "Halo 2" I knew it was going to be the Neil Diamond dance party. I can't wait for Chris to retell this story with Destiny where you can actually dance.

I used to use things like Pocket or Instapaper to save pages for later I didn't want to bookmark because I knew I'd only read it once but those suffered from the same problem as email in that I'd file a bunch of things away to read later and then never read them because I forgot that list existed. Now I just look at it right away or never see it at all.

I actually liked the character of Fi, but yes she is incredibly annoying. Thankfully this fact has been noticed and the next iteration of Zelda will supposedly cut down on the tutorials a lot. Fi is one of the instances where I wish they had done the walk and talk instead of forcing you to stand still and go though one way dialog boxes.

I am always torn between knowing I will forget about a thing if I'm not constantly reminded and my desire to clear that little icon telling me I have new emails. Usually the icon clearing wins out and I forget to do everything until the next icon pops up.

That is the exact reason I knew what to do. Skyward Sword in particular is rather heavy on the tutorials which doesn't help encourage creative thinking.

Deadpool is really hit or miss for me. When he's funny, I think he's hilarious. When he's not, it's super awkward and painful to see. I agree with Baron though, he makes a better supporting character than a main one. His shenanigans are only amusing in contrast, they don't stand very well on their own.

Well she's obviously never listened to the Idle Thumbs podcast and heard 3 dudes talk for hours about nothing at all.

I amused myself by taking those bits of advice to their absurd extreme (note: I obviously don't actually believe any of these) #6: Your man's been working all day. He doesn't want to hear how your day cooking and cleaning went. Just hand him a drink and he'll call for you when he wants you. #8: Don't listen to all those catty women. They just haven't found a good man yet. #10: Your man doesn't want to hear about your nonsense. Save the gossip for your other women friends. #14: If you do have a problem that needs fixing, your man can fix it for you.

I have those same thoughts about soap operas that have been going on for decades (sans the tights). That's what most modern mainstream comic books are to me. At one point it used to be about an interesting, creative idea but now it's just lots of drama and craziness that's constantly being overwritten when someone new takes the helm. That's obviously a huge generalization.

From the post: What that article (which I did not completely read) mostly says to me is that there are going to be assholes no matter where you go. There are feminists who are assholes. There are MRAs who are nice. There are also nice feminists and asshole MRAs. The bottom line is they're all people and people, especially on the internet, tend to be jerks given the chance. Like Bjorn, I think it's interesting her life led her to the conclusion it did but she seems to be overlooking a lot.

I think physical media eventually will die out (except for a few die hards, special editions, and niche markets) but I don't think it's going to be any ONE thing that kills it. It'll be a gradual fade into obscurity that we may or may not even notice given the rate technology grows and changes. Articles like that exist to me for the purpose getting clicks or so that someone down the line can point to it and say "SEE! I TOLD YOU SO!" (to be fair, I didn't fully read the article, just skimmed it)

I've been watching some of the runs I missed during the stream. Most of them (if not all) can be found . My favorite thus far is still the Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts run. Not because the runner is amazingly skilled or some insane moment happens, it's just entertaining and hilarious throughout.
