The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SecretAsianMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I originally bought a 360 to play Gears of War. A gaming club I was a casual member of during college had a open console night with the then recently released Gears of War on a projector screen. I remember being extremely impressed by the game, enough that I went and bought the system that weekend. I also bought a PS3 so I could play God of War III and Uncharted 2, but that was well after both those games were released. -
Flight Simulators or: I bought this flight stick, and darn it, I'm going to use it!

I should also mention that the first game, Decent:Freespace - The Great War is also available on gog.com. The series has absolutely nothing at all to do with the Decent series apart from being made by the same developer. If story at all matters to you then you should play the first one too but I believe a recap of sorts is available in Freespace 2 and it is definitely the superior game. Basically, if the idea of piloting a fighter or bomber in the midst of this looks fun to you, you'll probably like it.- 20 replies

I don't know if you're looking for games with combat, but Freespace 2 is one of my all time favorite games despite my not even liking the flight sim genre. It's fairly old (1999) but I feel like it might hold up. I know it's available on gog.com for $10.- 20 replies

That I will completely agree with you on. They are quite difficult. I've stated this opinion a couple times before but I dislike the remixes. I don't mind them being challenging, I just dislike that I'm forced to use a specific class with specific skills. I get what they were going for in trying to get you to think about how to use those classes a bit differently but I find the restriction very jarring in comparison to the main game. I'm sure I could complete them if I put in the time but I just don't feel motivated to.

While Spelunky and Rogue Legacy are different in many key ways, there are also enough similarities that a comparison between the two is valid, at least in my opinion. They are definitely more different than alike though. I think maybe one of the reasons you feel that you're developing more in Rogue Legacy than Spelunky is because Rogue Legacy is much more transparent about that. The RPG style stat increases and equipment make it much clearer when you're capable of taking on a new area or boss. With Spelunky, since all the improvements are internal to the player, it's harder to see if you're getting better at all. I like both of those things but I personally find the internal improvement type to be more satisfying in the long run.

I just remembered this exists. Seems relevant. http://www.polygon.com/2014/7/21/5923327/full-motion-vision-quest-every-fmv-game-reviewed

I am disappointed that Ganon was not replaced with Luigi.

I'm sure they do, I only managed to played one for about 2 minutes before I couldn't stand it anymore.

From my post in the Spelunky thread

PETA maybe? I know they have at least 2 Pokémon parody games.

Pokémon are weird no matter how you look at it. Arceus is their version of God, supposedly having created the universe. Naturally, since it's a Pokémon, you can catch it and confine it to a small ball.

I don't really read Jezebel very often but this sounds fucking terrible. The article itself is SFW but given the topic, the comments might not be. http://jezebel.com/we-have-a-rape-gif-problem-and-gawker-media-wont-do-any-1619384265

Assuming no ghosting, which I've already stated I hardly ever do, my times are pretty similar for Olmec and Hell.

I'm am totally swamped with the amount of stuff I have to do at work, as pretty much everyone here is. It's really hard to get support from people because everyone's so busy. However, a few days ago our coffee maker stopped working properly and now there are at least 6 engineers standing around trying to fix it. This place is weird.

Based on the title, I thought this thread was going to be about motion controls. I am pleased it is about something else altogether. I have nothing of value to add though.

I think Rogue Legacy is better at giving you that push to continue. Once you die you have all the gold to spend, which of course puts you back into the game because you've already picked another character and probably want to use the new upgrades/equipment/runes you just bought. Spelunky on the other hand doesn't have that same sort of endless loop. The only thing driving you forward is your own enjoyment of the game. And obviously death in Spelunky is much more permanent since nothing carries over while in Rogue Legacy each life can impact the next in a direct manner. Naturally it's just a matter of personal preference which one you prefer. I like starting over from a clean state and working my way up again which Spelunky fits almost perfectly. I enjoyed the progression in Rogue Legacy but eventually there's a ceiling (which admittedly you don't hit until around NG++) and once I reach that point I don't feel a drive to continue.

I had a dream last night that I can't remember at all except for one sentence taken completely out of context: "I dream of a world where men are not judged by the color of their skin but by the color of their pants".

Actually the last few years have really been a buyer's market. Interest rates on mortgages dropped to all time lows and tons of cheap houses came on the market. Of course it also means a lot of people lost their houses/jobs or were forced to sell at a substantially lower price and ended up renting.

Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I didn't know you could practice against enemies, but it sounds like you do it against one enemy (or enemy type) at a time? If that's the case I would still say the Bard could be useful as practice because of the interaction between multiple enemies or other game mechanics I'm not aware of. I think I would also prefer the normal mode though, for the reasons I outlined in my other post. It would be very easy to develop habits that would not transfer to moving with a beat. Also I have seen some video of the shopkeeper singing and it is the best thing. Almost enough by itself to make me want the game. -

I have not played Necrodancer at all so I may be way off base here but it sounds like the Bard is useful to learn how the game works without the complexity of moving to a beat. If enemies have different movement patterns and items have different use, I can see how doing that one step at a time would be helpful in learning about the game instead of trying to figure it out on the fly. To belabor the Spelunky comparison, it's like using the shortcuts to learn the later levels before you try from the start. Besides that, I really like the idea of the turn based beat mechanic. I don't like turn based games in general because I tend to overthink every move. I prefer games that let me have a plan but adjust to it on the fly in real time. Having a beat to drive me seems like a good compromise between turn based planning and real time reaction. -
The end of the run does tend to be the most interesting part. I can't blame people for wanting to skip to the end, which is one of the reasons I don't stream.

I streamed a few of my Spelunky daily challenges back when the Idle Explorers club was active. I've periodically considered doing so again since I'm STILL playing Spelunky everyday but I really don't think I'm interesting enough that anyone would want to watch.
