  1. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

How understandable is it going to be for someone like me who doesn't watch a lot of anime and has only seen (or even heard of really) one* of the things discussed? Did you guys get into specifics or was it more using the shows as a launching point to talk about broader topics (kind of like Idle Thumbs)? *That one thing would be Little Witch Academia
  2. Life

This past weekend was the first nice weekend in a while so I got a lot of outdoor stuff done. I fertilized and partially weeded the yard, spread some insect repellant around, got the driveway sealed, and installed some hooks in the garage to hang up some things that have been sitting around for months. I probably should have tried working on a Wizard Jam game but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be outside for a while and get some housework done. Gonna have to start mowing the lawn soon.
  3. Crap, I meant to expand that list last weekend and I totally forgot. I'll try to remember it tonight.
  4. Idle Thumbs 205: LPBs and HPBs

This article has nothing to do with lore, but the headline made me laugh. I saw it right after I finished the podcast and the timing couldn't have been better.
  5. Cartoons!

I know nothing about Uncle Gramdpa so that episode was just sheer wackiness to me, which I guess is the point? As for the other stuff
  6. Team Building Thread

I have no talent in art or music, haven't programmed in years, have zero experience making a game, and don't even have a workable idea yet. But I'm going to try and do something anyway. I have a copy of Gamemaker Studio Professional on my computer that I've been meaning to mess around with. Now's a good a time as any.
  7. TNG doesn't have a running plot like later Star Trek series do so you'll mostly be ok. The one thing that will probably be the least clear if you only stick to my list will be the character of Tasha Yar. If you don't want to go back and watch some of the early episodes to get a feel for the character (which I wouldn't really recommend you do anyway because they're terrible), I'll give you a brief summary of her.
  8. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

Yeah, the devs were on a Skype call during the run. It's part of the reason it's a good watch. They talked about some of the things they did with the intention they would be used specifically for speed runs.
  9. Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

I haven't been following along with this thread at all even though I was interested from the start. I didn't think I'd have time to do anything. I still don't really but I've changed my mind and said "screw it, I'll try to make a shitty thing". I made a new year's resolution to make a game this year and thus far I've done nothing to that end so maybe this will help me actually make some progress. I bought a copy of Gamemaker Studio Professional last year when it was on sale and haven't touched it since. I'm probably going to try and use that. I have zero art talent so I may be asking for some help there.
  10. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

I share most of your opinions on the game and wasn't a big fan of it myself. But I will admit that the speedrun from AGDQ 2015 was pretty good.
  11. Eggcorns

If they mean "moot point" then yes.
  12. Idle Thumbs 205: LPBs and HPBs

I like lore when it adds additional flavor to a game but ultimately isn't required. I'm the kind of person who will engage in that if it's presented in a way that's understandable. I dislike lore that's a prerequisite to understanding what the fuck is going on.
  13. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

Oh man, I actually have seen Little Witch Academia. I just didn't realize it until I saw that screenshot. However I'm still not a good candidate to have on the podcast because I have nothing interesting to say about it and know zip about the second one. On the subject of podcast "bits", I'm with Gormongous. If they arise naturally through the course of discussion and interaction between people, then I think its fine. But trying to plan them out in advance is probably going to make them sound artificial and practiced. Having a general outline is good but I'd avoid getting too specific, especially at such an early stage in the podcast's life.
  14. One of my more unusual college professors used to ride a unicycle to/from class. He also liked to perform a magic trick at the start of each class. I once missed the bus and arrived a few minutes late, only to walk in and find him kneeling on the ground wearing a blindfold with a large knife in his hand stabbing at playing cards scattered on the ground in front of him. I can only assume it was part of the trick. He was a pretty cool guy though.
  15. Idle Thumbs 201: Adults Only

I thought it was different, but different is good! From Cara to Danielle, I'll take all the accents I can get!
  16. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Overall, I think I'm averaging beating Hell about once a week. On a good week I'll do it 3 or 4 times. The one thing I've sort of stopped doing as much is actively trying to get a high score since my friends list leaderboard is pretty empty these days (although part of that may be that I do the daily challenge almost as soon as its available). I used to enjoy competing with Chris even though he wasn't aware of our competition. Also if anyone ever wants to watch me, I always leave my Steam streaming settings open to my friends list. Just be advised that I almost never say anything.
  17. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Pfft, what a loser. I really wish I kept track of stuff like when I started or how many times I've completed Hell. I'm pretty sure that I passed one uninterrupted year a while ago.
  18. I was amused when Chris credited somewhere between 1/4 to 1/5 of the cast to Spaff, even though there were only 4 hosts this week and Nick left early.
  19. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

DBZ is one of the few anime I have seen so I could actually talk about that sorta. But I don't really remember most of it and stopped halfway through the Buu saga. So probably get someone else who actually knows something or cares.
  20. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

I don't watch nearly enough anime to make any kind of contribution, but I support this fully. Unless you have need of a random person who will appear like once or twice a year to talk incoherently about the one thing they've seen in the last 10 months. So... I can be Nick Breckon basically.
  21. Life

You can also do the other super touristy thing and visit the Sears Willis Tower. If you're not afraid of heights you can stand in a glass box that juts out the side of the building on the 103rd floor.
  22. Life

Man, I haven't been to the Field Museum in years. I have family in Chicago (Naperville technically) and I used to spend summers there as a kid. We went to the Field Museum several times. I also remember playing in the fountain and getting the car seats all wet.
  23. Recently completed video games

I beat Guacamelee last night. I've beaten the game before but this time I was playing on hard. It wasn't as fun as I remembered it being. While I enjoy metroidvanias, I feel like this one didn't need to be one. Part of the fun of Metroid is exploring areas using skills or abilities you didn't have before. Guacamelee doesn't really have exploration, it's literally just matching abilities to colored blocks behind which lies a chest. The combat also felt less enjoyable this second time around. All the moves are very slow and deliberate, which is fine, but when the game starts ramping up it gets really frustrating to get hit by something because the windup for your punch takes forever. This leads me to not use most of the moves unless I need them to break a shield. Instead I just rely on throws to juggle groups of enemies, which is much less satisfying. The only part I didn't really have a problem with is the platforming. I admit it gets kind of ridiculous in a few places (not Meat Boy ridiculous but still way more than casual), but I actually think the dimension switching sections have some pretty clever design. It never took me more than a couple tries to get past any particular section. The exception for me is one area with Megaman style disappearing platforms, although I managed to get through it rather quickly this time.
  24. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Problems like that are one of the reasons I greatly dislike most controller designs. The addition of triggers was one of the best things to me but I was really disappointed that it didn't go any further. I'm always bothered that there are so many buttons but they're all designed to only ever be pressed by 2 fingers and 2 thumbs. I want buttons on the back or in some other orientation such that I don't need to contort my hand to do all the actions that I want.
  25. OnLive is shutting down on April 30th. It's patents have been sold to Sony. I never tried using it myself, although I do have one of the micro consoles. I got it for free at PAX.
