Idle Thumbs !!: With Bagblast
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I pretty much agree with Nappi's statement above. Video games as a topic are what got me to start listening to Idle Thumbs in the first place but it was the geniality, comradery, and overall quality of the hosts that kept me coming back. I once described the podcast to a friend of mine as the perfect balance between interesting intelligent discussion and poopy fart jokes. In truth I don't share a lot of gaming taste with the Thumbs but hearing you all talk is so engrossing that I want to listen anyway. I admit I've occasionally tuned out for a bit when the topic is something I'm not especially interested in or knowledgeable about, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality in my mind. I will miss the central topic being games as I don't consume much TV, movies, or books. That said, as long as the personality of the show is preserved, I'll follow along with pretty much any topic. And rest assured, candy will follow along too. -
My toolbar looks the same (mine looks like the second image) but other things are behaving strangely for me. Threads are being marked as unread even though I've definitely read them. The format of some posts are weird with the words stretching off the page while other posts fit the window. It was not like this earlier today.

My wife has been nervous about getting US citizenship since even before the rise of Trump. At this point I can't blame her for not wanting it. There are days I want to renounce my own.

My wife is currently planning a trip back to China with our daughter to see her side of the family. While I've told her that she shouldn't have any problem getting back into the US with her green card, I'm worried that won't be true in a few months because who the fuck knows at this point. I don't think that Trump has said anything about non-Middle Eastern countries just yet but I've long since given up trying to apply reason when he's involved.

Donkey Kong isn't Diddy's father, at least in most versions. Diddy is his nephew. Maybe DK had a brother or sister who married into a chimp family. Who am I to judge. Also Diddy is actually supposed to be a spider monkey while Dixie is a chimp and Diddy's girlfriend.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
SecretAsianMan replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I like the members of the Bombcast individually but as a group I find them lacking. Jeff only seems energetic when he's arguing how terrible something is, Brad is lackadaisical even when he's passionate, Drew rarely gets that into it and seems fairly stoic, and Jason I just don't know that much about. Dan was the one that bounced off of them a lot and made things interesting, if in no other way than to get a rise out of them. I half agree with Twig in that the Beastcast was already pretty jovial without Dan. I think he fits in there fine but it cut a big piece out of the Bombcast where it was needed way more. Basically my enjoyment of the Beastcast has gone up, but it doesn't equal how much my enjoyment of the Bombcast has dropped.- 1367 replies

I think Dan on the Beastcast is fine, but it's really killed the Bombcast for me. It feels so dead without him around. They need someone to play the fool.- 1367 replies

The restrictions are what killed Galaxy for me. I probably spent more time fighting and moving the camera than I did Mario. I moved the camera a ton in 64 and Sunshine as well, but it was less of an issue then because even though it's a 3D game, the movement is still largely on a flat plane. Most of the time you're moving forward or sideways and the vertical movement tends to be in a straight line too. With Galaxy though, there is a lot of simultaneous horizontal and vertical movement because you're running around spheres and shifting axes much more frequently. I remember misjudging distances and direction a lot more in Galaxy than I ever did in the previous games because I just couldn't get my bearings. To be clear, I don't think this is an inherent issue with the game. It's entirely a personal failing on my part, one that unfortunately made the game completely unenjoyable. If I went back and replayed them I'd like to think I'd fare much better now that I have more experience.

I binged on the newest season of Voltron: Legendary Defender despite being cool on the first season. The second one is an improvement on the first in pretty much every aspect (although the plot is a bit muddier due to the introduction of many unanswered questions). It has a good pace mixing character and action in a satisfying ratio. I'd still say it has the same problems though. It's very predictable and I find many of the characters more annoying than amusing (I hate Coran so much). If I had to describe the show I'd say it was a 90s cartoon mixed with the Teen Titans series.

I had the same problem, but it started for me in Galaxy. 64 and Sunshine I had no problem with and was able to pull of some speedrunner level moves, but for some reason Galaxy turned me into a one-eyed fool with no depth perception. Every 3D game since then has just compounded the problem for me. I can see why people like them but for the life of me I just can't get my brain to work.

I feel that your opinion echos mine. In general I thought the gameplay was fun but the level design was pretty uninspired in a lot of ways. Repetitive corridors and shafts get old fast. I want to say Jedi Academy was better about that but I honestly don't remember. I think at the very least it had more variety.

Idle Thumbs 298: For You, Not Them
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think games make a good kick off point, a way to start on common ground then branch off into whatever train of thought takes hold. That's what I've enjoyed about the podcast in the past. While I don't think there should be an obligation to have recently played a game so it can be discussed, I do like it when things start that way. Still, what I enjoy the most about the cast is listening to whatever is being talked about so I'm willing to go along with some format experimentation, at least for now. -

I came here to post the previous part -
It's from the 1973 movie The Sting. It actually is a good movie, you should watch it while furiously scratching your nose.

Don't ever watch The Sting

Idle Thumbs 298: For You, Not Them
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
A bit of clarification on Donkey Kong. Cranky Kong is the original DK from the first game, but he's the current DK's grandfather which makes him Donkey Kong III. DK Jr. is the current DK's father. This information has changed a bit over the years, at one point Cranky was DK's father but he's currently his grandfather. To make the Mario story even more confusing, there have been instances in Nintendo games where Mario and Luigi are originally from Brooklyn. The manual to Mario is Missing states they're from Brooklyn and Shigeru Miyamoto himself said he imagined him to be from New York. The cartoons also depict Mario living in New York although these are likely not canon. In my mind I always imagined that the Mario bros were originally normal humans from New York that got transported to the dimension of the Mario games and after spending so much time there they were transformed into their current states. -

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SecretAsianMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
Keep in mind the information from that article is from a developer and not a reporter. Nintendo has told outlets that the free game is only free to play for that month. Also she has stated that her comment on the triggers being analog was incorrect, they are in fact digital which aligns with other reports as well. -

After hearing last week's Beastcast and a correction involving nuclear subs, I'm strongly considering writing in to explain to them how nuclear reactors actually work since they got quite a bit wrong.- 1367 replies

Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)
SecretAsianMan replied to dartmonkey's topic in Video Gaming
I'm less optimistic. While I hope it does well, I'm concerned with Nintendo's history of being groundbreaking in some areas and hilariously outdated in others. The Switch as a whole is certainly different but they don't have the best record of actually supporting their own tech despite what their press releases will say. Their online model might very well kill several games if they can't make it competitive with the likes of Xbox and Playstation's respective services. And while Zelda and Mario do look exciting, the current lineup isn't near enough for me to want to dive into the system at launch. I've been burned by Nintendo over promising in the past and I'm not anxious to repeat that. The one hope I do have is if it does work out well I think this could be a good first console for my daughter when she reaches that age. The combination of physical and touch controls plus the portability seems like it would play well with a young child, not to mention the potential of Nintendo's back catalog of classic games. I would be more than happy to see everything I said above proven completely wrong.
