  1. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I also only got about an hour in for similar reasons. I'm not a huge fan of stealth games in general, especially first person ones. I felt like Riddick has some cool ideas and I'm admit to actually liking the universe the movies/games occupy but I could never bring myself to enjoy Butcher Bay.
  2. anime

A friend of mine has started me watching My Hero Academia. Apart from being extremely predictable I'm finding a majority of the main cast irritating. I rewatched One Punch Man on Netflix a couple weeks ago and I was way more into that. I've been binging a lot of superhero stuff lately (the Arrowverse shows and the Netflix Marvel stuff) and I'm getting burned out on the whole thing. Unless this gets way more interesting real soon, I might stop. Shamefully Wing is the only Gundam series I've seen from start to finish (including the OVA, Endless Waltz). I like the design of the Gundams a lot (although I never got the point of Sandrock) but you're totally right about the story and characters.
  3. The video featuring Chris isn't the one at the top, it's further down the page. Here's the direct link (as I said before, skip to 1:10 for old man Remo)
  4. The 100

Is it just capture of people playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds?
  5. Net Neutrality

It is both fitting and depressing that my last post in this thread was to announce that the FCC put the internet under Title II rules. The new FCC is proposing to undo all of that with the unbelievably ironically named "Restoring Internet Freedom" proposal. The proposal is currently a draft, but it is open for public comment. I strongly urge people to submit a comment to the FCC about this. You can do so by going to this page and on the left hand side clicking +New Filing to upload an attachment or +Express if you just want to comment without an attachment. It should be noted that in order to comment you will need to provide your name and address, all of which will be available on public record. Last time the FCC opened something like this for comment they got 4 million comments and crashed their site. They have since upgraded their network so it probably won't crash again. 6. Skip to about 1:10 for old man Remo
  7. I finished Iron Fist. Mediocre at best. My enthusiasm for the Defenders has waned somewhat knowing that I have to put up with more Danny Rand.
  8. There is a (very weak) explanation for why the genie won't save Aladdin's life without a wish. After realizing he's been tricked out of a wish, the genie tells him "Well, don't I feel just sheepish? All right, you baaaaad boy, but no more freebies." Also at the end of Return of Jafar, Jafar's lamp is destroyed by Iago (the red parrot voiced by Gilbert Gottfried). The animated series follows the events of Return of Jafar in which Iago is a (relatively) good guy.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

That's actually the exact reason I was asking.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

Is there a term for that phenomenon where you say a word a bunch of times and it becomes detached from language and loses meaning?
  11. Having run out of CW related shows, I've finally started Iron Fist. This isn't actively bad like I feared it would be, but it's not good either. Like Ben said, it's really slow and seems to lack a sense of direction. The scenes take forever to tell you nothing of importance or interest. I have no sense of the plot if there even is one other than "Hand do bad things". The fights lack any real energy or excitement. Daredevil fights were very kinetic and visceral, Jessica Jones few scenes show her emotion, Luke Cage was reluctant but determined. Danny's fights feel like he's only there because he couldn't think of something better to do. Even when he brings out the glowy fist I'm unimpressed. The biggest redeeming factor to me is the female characters. They are far superior to their male counterparts. Colleen is way more interesting and sympathetic than Danny is. Claire has been pretty great throughout each show. Even Jeri Hogarth (Carrie Anne Moss's character) is kind of a badass considering she was mostly just an ass in Jessica Jones. Joy is the only one who I'm not especially fond of, but at least she's willing to attempt to recognize her faults and fix them.
  12. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

Finished Supergirl season 1. I think I might like it more than the other shows? At the very least I find Kara to be cute and quirky in a refreshing way compared to Oliver or Barry. My complaints with the show are similar to the others in terms of plot. Lots of poor decisions and ill-conceived notions. In particular I didn't like the way the big problem at the end of the season was resolved. But overall it was good. I saw that Netflix is getting Flash season 3 and Supergirl season 2 at some point, presumably next month. So it'll be at least that long before I start bumping up this thread again.
  13. Life

Time for my annual complain about night shift post. Grumble grumble night shift grumble grumble no overtime pay grumble grumble sleep grumble grumble baby grumble grumble
  14. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

Arrow is very soapy. Flash is more comic booky, Supergirl feels more playful, and Legends is just a mess. And not learning from mistakes seems to be a common trend across all the shows.
  15. I still can't believe that Dan won a Taco Bell contest to have his wedding in the Las Vegas Taco Bell cantina. This feels like one of those things that makes me realize I'm in the Matrix.
  16. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

I finished Legends season 2. The show is nothing but plot holes upon plot holes upon plot holes. I might have enjoyed it more if I didn't find it so infuriating. I started Supergirl. I already like this way more than Legends.
  17. I Had A Random Thought...

My time here has made me MORE guarded about the rest of the Internet because every time I peer into another corner my default position is it won't be nearly as hospitable as this place is.
  18. Important If True 9: Wetzel's Podcasts

Short Circuit (1986) was a movie about Johnny 5, a prototype military robot that gets hit by lightning, becomes sentient, and tries to escape the company that built it. Batteries Not Included (1987) was a movie about a pair of drone-sized, sentient, robotic UFOs (and eventually their tiny robotic offspring) helping to save an apartment building from property developers. Apart from both having sentient robots, the two films have nothing to do with each other and one is certainly not a knockoff of the other. Johnny 5 is naive and sassy in the way that a 5 year old who watches too much TV is. The UFOs don't speak at all but for the most part are friendly and benevolent, only becoming aggressive after one of them is attacked.
  19. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

Since this thread is mostly me sitting here by myself, talking to myself I'll keep this post short. Legends continues to be dumb in the not fun way, but one thing I did appreciate last night was an episode that involved going to 1958 America. Prof. Stein (an older White man) remarks that the community they're in is very idyllic (think Pleasantville) at which point Jax (a young Black man) remarks "Yeah, if you're White" and Sara (a bisexual female) adds "And a man. And straight. And -" at which point Stein concedes and acknowledges the privilege. It was actually quite refreshing to see this exchange. I have to give the Arrowverse some credit for having a diverse cast and actually considering what that means instead of just being token characters (although I wouldn't mind some Asian mains).
  20. Life

You should get business cards that say "Award Winning Author" and introduce yourself as such. Also congrats!
  21. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I know what you mean. I'm one of those people who always reads patch notes to see exactly what's changed and how, which builds into my excitement to try the changes out. After all this time seeing and installing updates has become a Pavlovian response, even when there are no release notes to be found.
  22. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

I finished Arrow and have started Legends of Tomorrow. I'm only 3 episodes in and already I don't like this. Everything is so fast and loose. The plot is disjointed and none of the actions taken make sense. Character motivations are flimsy at best and the characters themselves seem very simple and shallow. The action is meh and the effects aren't that great. I might give up on this (but knowing me I probably won't).
  23. Arrowverse (DC/CW shows): Arrow, The Flash, etc.

I'm almost done with Arrow season 4. The drama is getting really heavy handed. And I find myself constantly questioning their decisions. Teaming up with Flash and Vixen in their respective episodes is fine, but when the fate of literally the entire world is at stake, they're NOT going to call the people with superpowers for a hand? Also is there anything that isn't contained on that island? It's got a Chinese prison, a Japanese submarine with super soldier serum, whatever artifact Constantine picked up, and the mystical idol that powers Darhk. I feel like the island from LOST wasn't this complicated.
  24. Endorsements from Thumbs Readers

I'm going to endorse one of my favorite websites/utilities/apps, Ninite (Windows only). In a nutshell, Ninite is a service that lets you download and install a lot of free, really useful software. You pick the software you want and Ninite will create a portable app that will not only install everything for you, it will skip all the dialog boxes (declining any additional software such as browser toolbars and reboot requests) and automatically pick either the 32 or 64 bit version depending on your system. In what is probably my favorite feature and the reason I love the service, if you run the app again it will download and install any updates. This includes any software you already had on your system when you first ran it. I usually run the installer/updater once a week just to keep everything up to date. Whenever I build a new computer or help someone set up their own, Ninite is one of the first things I run.
  25. When I was in college my class had more Davids in it than females, myself included. We eventually started referring to each other by some sort of epithet (I was "Asian Dave"). In hindsight it was a shitty practice but I wasn't cognizant of it at the time.
