Idle Thumbs 143: This One's Fr4e
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'm still listening to the episode, but I just wanted to say that I finally beat Olmec in Spelunky while listening. After failing so many times, apparently what I needed was an awesome podcast to listen to. Thanks Thumbs! -
Someone on the Giantbomb forums made a Patrick Klepek Spelunky skin.

That I agree with. Also Zeus, I wanna make it clear I was speaking generically and not necessarily about that specific apology. I mostly agree with you his apology.
-
If zero attempts at a personal apology were made, then yeah I can agree with you that the public one is more to save face than to actually be remorseful. I am going to argue with you a bit on your rules though. For rule 1, I'm again going to say how do you know you need to apologize? Let's say someone says something I think is offensive but they didn't think it was at the time. Clearly they're not going to apologize until after I or someone else points out that it's offensive, at which point they've been "caught". Otherwise you're going to have to preemptively apologize for everything you say because you never know who may be upset by it. I think maybe a clearer meaning would be "before you get caught in the public", assuming at least some kind of personal attempt was made. Rule 2 I agree with. Rule 3 is tricky to me. Personally, if someone hurts me, I want to know why. An apology doesn't have much meaning to me without knowing the reason why the thing was said in the first place. If someone says something because of depression or some other personal life problem, then I'm going to be more understanding and accepting of that remorse. If all that's said is "I'm sorry", I'm going to question the sincerity of it without more context. I want "I'm sorry and here's why". It doesn't justify the inciting action, but it will tell me the intent and that means a lot to me.

I'm a little more sympathetic (although not much) because sometimes it's hard to know if you've upset or offended someone until after everything has been made public. Again, I haven't been following this very closely but did she ever tell him that what he said offended or hurt her, or did that only happen at the time the conversation became public knowledge? I'm not trying to blame the victim here but I can understand making a public apology rather than a personal one if he didn't realize one was needed until after it became a public matter. I think it was a shitty thing to say but I have the benefit of hindsight.

I've only casually been aware of these events but I read his apology and it doesn't read as insincere to me. I don't buy into the argument that he's just making excuses or the idea that just because some people can handle loss or depression means that everyone should be able to. I generally consider myself to be a reserved, level headed individual but there have been times I've been depressed or angry enough to do things I later regretted (nothing like this but again, I'm not him). I don't know the guy, maybe he really is a jerk and this is the way he always acts. But in this particular instance it seems to me he feels bad. It doesn't excuse what he did at all. He did a dumb, hurtful thing and he should feel like shit that he did it. My point is that hopefully he'll learn something more than "next time don't get caught". Part of what I'm afraid of when things like this happen is that it's very easy to become cynical and think everyone is disingenuous. I'm sure many people are, but I'd also like to think that at least some people can learn and grow.

Are there sufficient funds left to also get some custom trading cards made of the Sean pic? I'd be willing to up my donation to make that happen, but I also understand not wanting to delay production any longer.

GOG is having a DRM-Free Time Machine sale. They're selling 30 games for up to 90% off, one game from each year spanning 1983-2013.

It's very tempting to reply to all the tweets but I don't want to give anything away before the note and other pieces arrive. Unless they've been peeking in this thread in which case SHAME ON YOU. But yes, truly great stuff.

I think there should also be a commemorative trading card, complete with stats on the back.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

I watched Crossfire last night. I really like Odo. He had some really great interactions with some of the other characters in this episode (giving Worf advice on how to maintain order in his life, Quark being an actual friend to him while still being a Ferengi, and his scenes alone with Kira). One thing that's generally bothering me about most DS9 episodes is that I feel like they end a scene too early. I keep expecting the episode to wrap up, but then the credits roll and I guess it was over? Maybe it's just a leftover from TNG and Voyager but those shows gave me more closure at the end of an episode and I feel that DS9 isn't doing that. -
It's from a parody of the original PSA, but you are technically correct, the best kind of correct.
-
That could work if the story wasn't dependent on you being a specific character. I would also say that it might promote the idea that people are expendable but those types of games already do this anyway.

I'm all for Sean and Nick art if it exists.

Quicksilver's number 8. In the comics, he's the son of Magneto and his mutant power is super speed (hence the cover image).

Somewhat related to regenerating health, what about down but not out? I could never wrap my head around the idea of reviving someone by tapping them on the shoulder. Something like an injection or device to revive makes a bit more sense, except it then begs the question why can't the downed person use it on themselves.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes

I liked the puppetry in Farscape. I appreciate that there are physical things instead of cheesy effects. I also like the crazy, goofy episodes in that series more than the crazy, goofy episodes in most other sci-fi shows. Enough of that, back to Star Trek. Star Trek does not have the best pilots and Voyager is no exception. I like the premise of a ship being stuck so far from home but I never liked the reason that's presented Voyager. The studio was also afraid it was kind of weak and they built themselves an escape route: the Caretaker's mate. The intention was that if the show proved unpopular, they could use the Caretaker's mate as an excuse to change the show. -

I like Farscape too (John Crichton is one of my favorite characters of all time) but I enjoy it in a different way than I do Star Trek. -

I would be up for some too if there's a place for a shitty hacker (doesn't have to be the hacker, I can be shit at all of them). -
That is the best thing. I think day 82 might be my favorite.
