  1. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

That's the impression I have as well. For example, it makes much more sense to have the card hidden inside the uneaten chicken rather than just having a "lost" card sitting out in the open.
  2. Movie/TV recommendations

I finished watching the newest season of Sherlock last night. I still like it, but I think they're trying too hard. I prefer the first season when it was cleaner and more pure Sherlock mystery.
  3. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

As an example of the difference between Mega Monkey and the normal difficulty, on the normal mode the chicken is already eaten when you enter the restaurant so all you have to do is pick up the card. Mega Monkey mode adds the step to eat the biscuit and use the maggots.
  4. Video Game mechanics to retire

Completely agree. I hate the way most games portray morality as black and white. Granted, most games tend to have extreme or absurd situations such that there usually is a clear difference (ie help the cops or kill the cops), but I prefer it when games show consequences of actions rather than just filling up some invisible meter.
  5. Nintendo 3DS

I didn't play any of the X games after 5 and even then I liked 4 more. 5 had a lot of things going on, some of which I liked, some of which I didn't. I also really liked the remake of MMX for the PSP which let you play the game as Vile. I agree about the systems in the Zero games. The other reason I never got into them was the style. I just didn't care for the way the games looked. I never played the ZX games because I assumed at the time that they were just more Zero games.
  6. Nintendo 3DS

The X series is my personal favorite, at least the first few. I still like X4 because at the time playing the entire game as Zero was such a major difference from playing as X. That line blurred a lot as the series went on.
  7. Amateur Game Making Night

I subforum would be nice because then we could create individual threads for different kinds of things instead of cramming everything into this thread or taking over the general video game threads. But for now I think we can see how it goes here.
  8. Movie/TV recommendations

I did that when I moved into my house. Haven't looked back once.
  9. Amateur Game Making Night

I love this idea. I've also been dabbling around in GM (so far I've made a shitty Galaga clone) but I think I'd be much more motivated with a community that I already like and respect for reasons that don't involve making games.
  10. DS9 is a long term show. It has a very slow windup to the big battle with the Dominion, something Star Trek hadn't really done before. Because sci-fi shows tend to cost a lot of money due to the amount of computer generated effects required, they have to stretch things out over a long period of time. Not to mention the fact that because DS9 takes place in the Alpha Quadrant, they still have to deal with the Star Trek regulars like Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, etc. Voyager on the other hand doesn't have that limitation. Because they're in a totally unexplored area, the writers are free to create a new race, anomaly, technology, or other crazy thing whenever and however they want. While Voyager also has longer plots than TNG, they tend to be confined to a single season or only get a few mentions, with the exception of the Borg and the show's overall plot of getting home. I think how much you like each series will be different depending on how you look at it. For the individual episodes, I generally prefer Voyager because they're more entertaining. As a long form thing, DS9 has a much better plot by sheer virtue of the fact that it has one.
  11. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

I love that one of his insults about the site is that it should try to make the world a better place, but what he wants is more detail on guns and punches while apparently his idea of "satire" is shitting all over the idea that games can be art.
  12. Feminism

Woman on tumblr takes horrible comments about her and turns it into an art project
  13. Life

Full of country goodness and green peaness.
  14. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

I've started harassing them on Twitter to do a live stream of the unveiling. I think if enough of us prod them we can make it happen.
  15. ObjectiveGameReviews.com - A Subtle Journey of Discovery

So he legitimately wants actual objective reviews to include absurd and pointless levels of detail but his idea of satire is a meaningful idea?
  16. Life

新年快乐 Happy Chinese New Year. It's the Year of the Horse in case anyone's wondering.
  17. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

Well, since they already know (or at least strongly suspect) that more stuff is coming, we could petition them to open everything on a Twitch stream or something.
  18. Feminism

I would find it fascinating if the more overtly sexy female characters were less effective than the reasonable ones, and then seeing how many people played with them anyway.
  19. Yeah it's in there. It's an important part of Voyager, I wouldn't leave it out. I even included the episode after that shows what happens to even though I didn't think it was a good episode.
  20. Also RE the Kazon: I think they're a dumb enemy too. They're introduced in the series as a desert tribe that's desperately seeking water, but then it's revealed they have an armada of spaceships. What the heck? Voyager never really gets a single large enemy the way DS9 does with the Dominion. The closest is probably the Borg, although there are a few other recurring enemies as well (the Vidiians, the Malon, and the Hirogen).
  21. Idle Thumbs 143: This One's Fr4e

That's basically what happened to me. I love hearing the Thumb's stories about Far Cry 2 but my personal experience was extremely different from theirs. I wanted to like the game but it consistently frustrated me at every possible opportunity. Instead of seeing awesome emergent gameplay, all I saw was bullshit ways the game was screwing me over and that just made me mad. In hindsight that's maybe not a fair assessment, but it's what I felt at the time. I understand what the anonymous dev was saying. I appreciate the systems and the way other people enjoyed the game, they're just not things I ended up enjoying myself.
  22. There was never a straight answer. I think the most commonly accepted reason is that they would have had to pay royalties to the writers of The First Duty for using the character. It was easier to make a new character that was similar rather than pay for the continued use a character that was only seen once.
  23. I like Kim merely on the basis that he's an Asian character, which is a lame reason but I also see a bit of myself in him besides the fact that we're both Asian. Chakotay is one of the least developed characters in the series. You get some of his background but he never really becomes anything beyond the spiritual First Officer. I mentioned this before, but One Small Step seems like it's going to be about him, except he gets injured early in the episode and all the character development goes to someone else. The Doctor is by far the best Star Trek doctor. He has some of the best episodes, both serious and comedic. I never really cared for Torres or Paris. One side note about Paris: he was originally going to be the character Nicholas Locarno from the TNG episode The First Duty, which was about Wesley Crusher getting into an incident at Starfleet Academy. Locarno was the squad leader during the incident and gets expelled at the end of the episode. Paris' background is based on Locarno and the same actor played both characters. There's even a scene in Voyager where Paris' father has a picture of Tom as a cadet, which was taken from the TNG episode. Another character side note no one but me will find interesting: Kira Nerys on DS9 was originally going to be Ro Laren from TNG. The actress who plays Ro declined the role so they created Kira. On my own viewing front, I'm wrapping up season 4 of DS9. At this point I'm basically watching all the episodes now that the Dominion is becoming more serious.
  24. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

This is the craziest, best thing. Everybody's so stinking talented! I can't even begin to imagine what the 15th or 20th anniversary will bring. I'm going to have to start upping my gifts. Nerds Rope seems paltry in comparison to all this majesty.
