  1. Spelunky!

Bananasaurs Rex just set the record for high score with an absurd amount of $3,105,850. He got an incredibly lucky seed that gave him a plasma cannon on the first level and a jetpack on the second. The whole thing is archived in a crazy long stream on his twitch channel. http://www.twitch.tv/bananasaurus_rex/c/3763690

  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I think the idea is that it has to be insulting in some way. In the case of the pot and kettle, the insult is that they're dirty or tarnished. I'm pretty sure the phrase originated when black was a color and not a race.
  4. Idle Thumbs 146: Osama's Dog

That is true, but the point of my fictional site wouldn't be to provide professional editorials or criticism. There are already plenty of places to get that. My site would be more like getting recommendations from a friend whose opinion you trust.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

Reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons where Homer takes Mr. Burns' yacht out to international waters where anything is legal.
  6. Idle Thumbs 146: Osama's Dog

I've often considered starting a website where games are publicly reviewed, but not scored. The review would end with a recommendation to either play it or not. Reviewers would be required to provide a list of games they like and don't like, that way you could find reviewers who share your own sense of enjoyment, which I find is much more helpful than a number.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

As I understand the phrase, it has nothing to do with race. It's to point out hypocrisy. The reason the color black is used is because they're supposed to be covered in soot from being placed in hot coal. So the pot is mocking the kettle for being black (dirty) while it is also dirty itself.
  8. Idle Thumbs 146: Osama's Dog

His actual name is Swanky Kong.
  9. 3 questions for those of you who work in the Industry

My answers to your questions are in my previous response, but I didn't number them. Basically 1. Job security 2. Not interesting (to me) 3. Join clubs and do stuff related to what you think you want to do As for my job, I'm an electrical engineer at a nuclear power plant. My job is about 20% engineering and 90% paperwork (yes, those numbers are correct). Academically it's interesting and I do like walking around the plant and just generally marveling at the crazy amount of engineering all round me, but really it's a desk job and I don't find it particularly fulfilling. For personal reasons I'm not going to get into, I can't leave the job so I'm kind of stuck there for the time being.
  10. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

God that still cracks me up.
  11. Movie/TV recommendations

I liked the Avengers (and in general I like Joss Whedon's stuff but I won't get into that now). I thought it was a fun, entertaining movie, which is exactly what I want out of a superhero movie. Guardians looks like it'll be fun and entertaining as well (the Farscape comparison is very apt).
  12. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

The barber's song is my absolute favorite Monkey Island thing. Please tell me you listened to all the lyrics even after recognizing which one would end the song.
  13. Idle Thumbs 146: Osama's Dog

Ok, some Donkey Kong facts: 1. Cranky Kong is in fact the current Donkey Kong's grandfather. This means that his father is Donkey Kong Jr. which makes him Donkey Kong III. 2. Diddy Kong is Donkey Kong's nephew, not his son 3. The "cool" Kong was supposed to be Funky Kong
  14. Idle Thumbs 146: Osama's Dog

I believe it was Samus dog, as in Samus Aran, the female power armor wearing protagonist of the Metroid series.
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah, Deadpool is most amusing when he's contrasted against other characters. By himself he's just a crazy weirdo but pair him with someone like Wolverine or Cable and he's far more entertaining.
  16. Dreams!

I had an Indiana Jones themed dream last night. I don't remember the details, but it was basically Indiana Jones doing wall runs and jumps and climbing all over a temple. It was a real life Indiana Jones (although he didn't look like Harrison Ford), but he moved like a video game character. He had the same running, jumping, climbing, hanging, etc. animations you see in games like Assassin's Creed. I think at one point he also jumped on a snake, except instead of being crushed the snake exploded into bits of blood like Spelunky.
  17. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I completed my second Hell run on a daily yesterday. For a brief moment, I was ranked number 2 on the leaderboards. I really should be recording these.
  18. 3 questions for those of you who work in the Industry

    Onanism is a hands-on job.
  19. New people: Read this, say hi.

I do that all the time. In fact I rewrote this very post several times and it's only three sentences long. Welcome!
  20. 3 questions for those of you who work in the Industry

As an engineer who considered making games in college, I can relate to your position. I would have to say the best thing about my job is job security, which these days is worth a lot (see Irrational Games). It may not be very exciting (in fact it's not) but it is a comfort to know I have a long term job. I think the best advice I can give is to figure out what matters to you. If making games is the only thing that will make you happy, then try it. Even if you can't get a job making games right out of college, a lot of those skills will be usable in other places. I would also suggest looking for clubs or groups at school. One thing I regret was not getting more involved with the game making club when I was in college. If you can't find one, consider starting one yourself.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

There's a scene in the BBC show Sherlock where he gets made fun of for not knowing "basic" facts, such as the Earth goes round the Sun. His counter argument is that this knowledge is irrelevant to him because if the Sun went round the Earth, nothing in his life would change. He compares his brain to a hard drive and says there is only so much storage space, so he prioritizes important things, namely things that can help him solve crimes. But yeah, people are dumb. I also remember seeing a similar survey once that showed people thought humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time because of The Flintstones.
  22. Consolidated ID Exchange

Added my info. I technically have and XBL and PSN account, but I never use them and don't even have the consoles hooked up so I left those blank. I'll fill them in if I ever get back to that.
  23. Spelunky!

    Cool Metroid mod of Spelunky
