store.idlethumbs.net/wizard does not exist. 0/10. Would not shop again.

Oh yeah, I totally agree that having her around as Oracle is great. It's just sad that because this is a video game it means you won't be able to play as her.

I don't really think of Tim Drake as lesser known. Perhaps not as well known as Dick Grayson, but probably better known than Stephanie Brown or Cassandra Cain. Maybe that's just me though.
-
I think for the main, playable characters they'll stick with the most well known ones. I imagine that a significant number of players will only be really familiar with the most famous versions of the characters. Having different versions appear as cameos or easter eggs are fine because they're little treats for those in the know. I just have my doubts that they'll include Batgirl at all. I would love to be wrong though.

The intentionally difficult games still strive for that sense of flow, they just approach it from a different angle. Rather than a game that comes down to the players level and slowly ramps up the challenge, they require the player to ramp up their ability to the game's level. You might hit the flow less often but it's likely to be a better feeling when you do. Both have a sweet spot, but one of them tries to come to you while the other makes you go to it. On the opposite end of the scale, I think it depends on what the developer is trying to achieve. Obviously the Fullbright Company wasn't trying to make a mechanically challenging game, possibly because it would have interfered with the narrative and atmosphere. I would argue that Gone Home still has a sense of flow because I don't think flow only comes from overcoming a challenge. If the point is to lose yourself in the task, then Gone Home absolutely did that for me even though the task was simple to accomplish. In fact giving me challenges like puzzles or some bizarre form of combat would probably have disrupted the flow I did get.

For the last two days on my way to work I've driven by a pile of garbage on the side of the road. What I find interesting about it is that someone put a cardboard sign next to it that says "WHY???". This person clearly went out of their way to do this.

I think having Oracle makes sense in the game and, like I previously stated, is one of the better justifications for having a disembodied voice in your head. I'm just lamenting that this means having Batgirl in the game is unlikely for the reasons I've already said.

I am aware there have been other Batgirls besides Barbara. But she is without a doubt the most well known one and probably the most likely to actually appear in a video game. Yes, the Arkham games like to include some of the more obscure characters too (not that the other Batgirls are that obscure), but they tend to be more of side features or easter eggs. I don't think we'll be seeing a Stephanie or Cassandra Batgirl anytime soon in a game.

I am disappointed by the store's lack of a /wizard page. Never buying anything from there now.- 141 replies

I too think the black bars are better but I like current version's ability to hide huge amounts of text/images. Also Gormongous, I think a random button is a great idea.

To wrap up my experience with the game, I'm now "done" done. I got all the Riddler trophies for both Batman and Catwoman, completed every side quest, did a few of the challenge maps with Robin and Nightwing, and played the Harley DLC. While I do like Batman, I enjoyed getting a chance to play as other members of the Bat family. I'm hoping that Arkham Knight will have more of that but I doubt it. I do kind of wish that this wasn't a continuity with Oracle so that Batgirl could have been in it too, but it's probably one of the best justifications for the voice in the ear thing.

To jump onto this least useful point, I agree. I think Star Wars in general has some neat ideas and possibilities that suffered from poor execution. Lucas pretty much had final say in everything, which is totally his right, but maybe that wasn't the best idea for the final product. I'm optimistic it can get better, or maybe I'm just hopeful.

Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)
SecretAsianMan replied to Irishjohn's topic in Multiplayer Networking
I have occasionally gotten a seed that had no way through except bombing, but only in the mines and never in the city of gold. I notice you have no bombs too. That sucks. -

I managed to get Chris to play Doge 2048 after a Spelunky stream. Best. -
Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)
SecretAsianMan replied to Irishjohn's topic in Multiplayer Networking
I still dislike that the leaderboard for Spelunky is solely based on score. I mean, I get why, but that doesn't mean I don't wish there were other types of leaderboards. Even since the days of arcades and Mario, I've never cared about getting a high score so I just can't bring myself to care in Spelunky. I'd prefer it if the leaderboard also tracked time or had a way of sorting by furthest level instead of purely score. -

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
It's a recurring problem in most sci-fi shows of this type. I like Stargate (which I think is inferior to Star Trek but still entertaining) and I remember a thing one of the writers on that show said when they introduced a new enemy. I don't remember exactly what was said, but it was something along the lines of making an enemy powerful enough to be a threat, but dumb enough that you could beat them every week. -
A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
I believe that was the intent. Also, because I can't help myself, more random Star Trek trivia. At one point during the show's run, an idea was pitched that a female Starfleet medical technician would get assimilated by some Borg from the episode. That technician would have been played by Alice Krige, the actress for the Borg Queen, thus showing the birth of the Queen. -
I think part of that is belonging to a group. If the meaning to one person is no longer pejorative but it still is for everyone else, there's value in getting that changed. It sounds like maybe you've learned to separate words from their meaning on your own, but that's not a statement everyone can or wants to make. Edit: Damn you Zeus, beat me to the punch. Fucking nerd*. *Nerd in this instance is used as a term of affection. This note exists because nothing is clear anymore apparently

I was typing up a response (damn my slow self doubting nature), but in the last few minutes everyone else has basically already said it so I'm just going agree with Twig, Gormongous, and Zeus.

Changing the meaning of a word can disarm a person. If someone were to say something to me with the intent of causing harm, but they used a word that they consider harmful and I don't, then their power has been stripped away. True, they can (and probably would) invent or try to co-opt a new word to replace it. But the act of reclaiming one word undermines the power of any future words that may be used. It's a way to fight back without stooping to their level. You won't change their way of thinking by doing so, but you can take away the ability to cause harm which is a thing worth doing. I disagree that words and weapons are not comparable, but as you said that's a different discussion.

I like Fun Dip too. I actually like eating the stick more than the dip. My favorite utensil for eating soup is bread.

Idle Thumbs 152: Piercing the Fourth Dimension

Continuing my trend of contributing nothing of importance to any of these discussions, hearing Chris talk about eating peas all I could think of was this Carry on.
