  1. Life

I have glasses now for the first time in my life and man it's weird. Like just walking around is disorienting. Ahhh!
  2. anime

FINALLY someone else who sees the truth!
  3. anime

Rolling Girls is, two episodes in, incredibly dynamic and fun and that's awesome. Yuri Kuma Arashi is... well, not even trying to be subtle, really, in its allegory. But also I have no idea what's going on. I don't know if it's because I'm dumb or the anime's dumb. Dennou Coil's second episode continues the cool trend. Log Horizon focused on the kids this episode and was lame (but also kinda cool because I remember going through what they were going through when I played WoW and... I never expected an anime to legitimately remind me of that feeling?), especially after the Awesome Shit last episode. ): Jojo is... Jojo...!

DEATH OF THE AUTHOR or whatever blah Yes, I understand that they've said they wanted to make her that, but I think they failed at that pretty damn hard if that really was their goal. Re: Mistakes: I did not get that impression at all from the stories of Arise, even in the first two. She makes mistakes but she pretty much resolves them on her own. If she gets any help, it's help she demands and/or earns, rather than help she begs for. I don't think I ever felt like she wasn't the one in control, even when she was fighting her own false memories. Even when she was being duped by other people. She'd figure it out and take care of it. I DUNNO MAN.

So moe means childlike and cute? I mean that's what I thought it meant, until I saw it used for things that obviously weren't that... (Not around here, just... on the internet.) I guess in appearance she qualifies (at least, relatively speaking), but I pretty strongly disagree re: her attitude. Actually, to be honest, her appearance and consistently wide-eyed deadpan stare make her seem much more inhuman than cute to me, so maybe that's why I have trouble seeing what you're talking about. Like it legitimately stuck out to me very frequently how WEIRD it was that she always had that exact look in that image. With a few exceptions, e.g., when she's being more "human" and having a relationship, etc. Though, to be fair, I don't remember if any of the previous incarnations did the same thing.
  6. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

As opposed to asking if people condone human sacrifice, which happened before any of those questions? This thread is a mess. There's no defending it.
  7. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

As far as I can tell, the meat-eaters are not being assholes, they're only being ACCUSED of being assholes over and over, sooooooooooo...

WHAT IS MOE I STILL DON'T EVEN KNOW like i THOUGHT i had a grasp of what it was but now arise is moe so i have NO IDEA AGAIN

Yesterday I watched a bunch of shit while I was feeling exceptionally lazy. Assassination Classroom: Definitely dumb, but definitely a good adaptation of the dumb manga, which is entertaining and dumb. Good. I like the voice they gave to Koro Sensei (the monster teacher who's going to destroy the world unless this classroom of kids can assassinate him first). Ahh good. Death Parade: Pretty good first two episodes. I guess the series is gonna focus on the characters running the bar AKA purgatory while also telling stories of the people who come to the bar AKA dead people. Looks real nice. (It's Madhouse, so of course it does.) Was surprisingly dark and not in a shocking "HAHA ISN'T THIS SO DARK" kind of way. I think. Kill la Kill OVA: Haha maaaan that was real fun. What a nice surprise to come back and get an episode like THIS. Yes, yes. Good job Trigger. Tokyo Ghoul √A: First two episodes were um, I dunno. Better than the first two episodes of the first season, I guess, but I don't really understand the main character's motivation at all right now... Maybe I should just drop it, I don't know. coaxmetal keeps telling me the manga's super great in IRC though. I dunno. Yatterman Night: I kept hearing how this is the surprise anime to watch out for this season, and the first episode definitely sold me. Basically, heroes (Yattermans!) who saved the world a long time ago have now, generations later, become evil overlords. Now, descendants of long-ago villains are going to fight the power. It sounds dumb when I write it out, because I'm bad at writing, but there's more nuance to it. Also the main character is a nine year old girl who's decided that enough is enough. It's time to free the world. Yeah okay! For this season, I still need to watch Rolling Girls (I've heard it's really good??) and Yuri Kuma Arashi. ... Okay all that aside, there's a new Lupin III coming out during the spring season?! He wears a blue jacket, now. Dang. EDIT: Oh yeah it's being talked about in the Movies/TV thread so I forgot to mention it here, but I did finish Ghost in the Shell: Arise. I liked it a lot. I'm glad it's being further drawn out into a full season. Wonder if they'll be able to keep up the obviously high budget, though. It looks super nice.

hahaha good lord this thread went to shit

oh eva excuse me while i vomit uncontrollably hehehe I use "all right" all the time to mean "something I really enjoy, but have no idea what everyone else will think, or even know if it's actually good". So, it's something I really enjoy, but have no idea what everyone else will think, or even know if it's actually good. Oh what I loved Eden of the East. ): Anyway, Arise definitely has some naked Major going on, and while it happens more than dude butt, it doesn't feel super gross. It is what it is, but it felt more natural, less out of place, than I remember it feeling in the old movies. It's entirely possible that I'm just used to it, though.

fwiw there's totes some dude butt in the third gits: arise episode (or "border" as they call it for some weird reason (japan))
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

In my will-never-actually-happen fantasy land, I picture Scarlett Johansson existing in the movie for all of like ten minutes before that body is destroyed and the Major gets a new body that is Asian.
  14. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah I absolutely understand why they would feel they need to do these things. But it sucks every time I see it actually happen. It's basically prioritizing money over morals. I mean... that's capitalism, I know. Welp.
  15. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Meanwhile PC Gamer wrote up an apology for lack of unimportant-disclaimer re: some relationship and the comments are filled with, "See, if other websites just did this, there wouldn't be a GamerGate" and I'm once again left wondering why gaming websites should even exist if all they're going to do is cater to the bullshit.
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah there are any number of ways you could justify her being white, but... They won't. And they shouldn't have to, because she shouldn't be white. That's not who the character is. Instead she's white because it's Scarlett Johansson and who doesn't want to see her be a badass. (I mean I actually like her for a role like this, I think; she does the action thing well enough, yeah? I think.)
  17. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Wow I never realized how much I built my mental image of you off of Urkel.
  18. Movie/TV recommendations

Basically exactly how I feel yes.
  19. Nintendo 3DS

It actually is. GBA games only work on the 3DS via the DS chip which itself has a GBA chip, which means GBA games aren't actually "emulated", so much as running in DS hardware mode. So people (probably correctly) figure that Nintendo never released them outside the Ambassador program because it was a cheap way of doing it. As for SNES, I'm told those don't exist because there's no graceful way to display SNES resolutions on the shitty 3DS screens' resolution. Some games ran at small enough resolutions, but not all of them. 3DS screen height is 240 pixels. SNES games are 478 pixels at max (224 at min). Which, unfortunately, means they won't show up on 3DS since, though the screen is larger, the resolution is not. But GBA games might, since the system will be more powerful and theoretically able to properly emulate while in 3DS hardware mode. I suspect they will.

Yes that's Arise, which I mentioned, and seems good. To be fair, the Major is also a brain in a full-on cyborg body, so she can look however she wants. So while I agree with you to some extent, it's also not really anything that'd ruin it for me, if they played their cards right. (They won't.) What bothers me more is they're making a Japanese character white. Scarlet Johansson can't be Motoko Kusanagi, so they're going to have to basically create a brand new character. And it won't take place in Japan, because of course it wouldn't that wouldn't be very interesting Japan's a different country!
  21. The Great Debate: Legalization

Either I'm more tolerant of people or I'm luckier in who I've met; I very rarely meet people of the "stoner" variety who I find repulsive.

Sorry I meant they just dropped out of school and never looked back. I can certainly understand the desire to finish school, though.
  23. Movie/TV recommendations

To be perfectly honest, I thought the original movies were kind of garbage. Though, to be fair, I watched them after I watched Stand Alone Complex: All of It. I'm now watching Arise, which I guess is like a retelling or a prequel, I'm not sure, it's really been so long that I don't remember what happened in the original movies. Anyway, Arise is all right. I'm diggin' being back in this particular cyberpunk world enough that if there are any flaws, they don't stand out to me. EDIT: Ooooh. "On January 8, 2015, it was announced that Arise would be adapted into a "TV series" in the spring of 2015."

Um hmmm. If I had been offered a full-time position while I was in school, I would have taken it. I have friends who did it, and they have never regretted doing so, as far as I know. Though we are all programmers, so perhaps that's different.
