Well, it's about coming of age, isn't it? That age wherein everything is just 'meh' and things just seem to happen to you. I remember very little of note happening in CitR, but it was totally written for my age (around 14, I think.) Just because it's a classic doesn't mean it's not for Young Adults.

*Couldn't Sorry, MAJOR pet peeve of mine. On the whole, I agree with your point though. People should read the stuff aimed at them - if they're adults, read books aimed at adults - but it's perfectly valid to read other stuff.

Not only is it a good film, it's a good adaptation of the source material.

I don't think it's just the jokes, but the subtle statements that Adams is making on humanity that make Hitchhiker's a timeless piece. Hell, they're not even always subtle -- there's a line, and I'm paraphrasing, wherein it's 'revealed' that "the president's job is not to yield power, but to draw attention away from it." -- I don't know, that's an obvious and not particularly great example, but people far more intelligent than I have dissected Adams' writing to find truly interesting statements about us.

Out of curiousity guys who agree with that piece - Where do you stand on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

Why? What's the difference between her reading it in private or in public? (Not attacking, just curious.)

I don't know, I think it's interesting to discuss the hidden merits of books aimed outside your apparent demographic, hence the majority of my main post. =)

Even though I don't think it's worthy of discussion, I'd still likely recommend you at least check out The Hunger Games (not its sequels) if you're ever looking for a light read, Chris. It's easily finishable in a couple sittings, and it's a very easy read. It's a fun romp; rather like watching an action film, you can just switch off and watch your mind imagine the world.

What would you say is subtle about THG? I'm honestly curious - I thought everything was pretty much shouted at the reader: "NO SERIOUSLY GUYS. KATNISS IS LIKE THE SAVIOUR BUT SHE'S NOT YOUR TYPICAL TEENAGE GIRL HEROOOOOO"

Phew, I thought this was the case. Continue the insults, guys!

It's a while off yet, I'd say at least 6 weeks. But it's a short book, you can finish it in a couple sessions.
