  1. The threat of Big Dog

I guess Big Dog is resurfacing in the global internet conscious recently, out of nowhere a new wave of people are being terrified by this menace. After the recent discussion on the podcast, a recent reddit thread has popped up. All you need to know about the Big Dog program and other abominations: http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/bnp2l/i_dont_know_about_you_but_i_find_this/c0nntu2

  3. Other than confirmation bias, Benford's law i think is a fantastic explanation of why those digits would be so present. But also more pronounced in systems that are not base 10. Systems like time put a greater frequency on low numbers since they don't count up to 99:99. And many systems like receipts and order numbers will truncate to lower numbers and just roll over after a few digits to simplify.

  5. I just feel like this whole paradox is a bit forced, a lot of the interesting elements are driven from making the situation more convoluted.

    This video is fantastic:
  7. Also on a personal note, I think the numbers need to be readjusted so that expectation value isn't a tempting distraction. People are right that missing out on $1,000 doesn't seem like a big deal when $1,000,000 is on the table. If this truly was an expect observer, what they would do is come up with 2 amounts that would cause the contestant the maximum amount of suffering during the decision phase. And if it's main objective wasn't preserving money but driving ratings to the show, then it would also chose based on an observation of the audience rather than the contestant. Going with whatever option gives them the most tense viewing experience. Which is basically what they do in Deal or No Deal.
  8. That type of logic problem is usually solved by creating a grid of all possible outcomes, then weighing the probability of them to determine what your best outcome is. Often the problems are framed with a "perfect logician", rather than an AI. Basically that no matter how smart you are, they will know what you're going to do. All other details about being correct 50 times in a row are probably just ground work to say "they're perfect". But honestly by changing the question and giving us some statistics, it actually puts some new weighting on the probability, though I don't think it's that significant. Nick's reasoning is a "dominant strategy". The most famous example is probably The Prisoner's Dilema: Also here's one about pirates that are perfect logician's:
  9. Just getting into this episode. But did we just find out that "hoisted on his own petard" is a Shakespearean "grenade rolled down the hill"? Also I see a dark room is being endorsed here. A couple friends of mine just uploaded prototype inspired by a dark room that people might be interested in called Armory and Machine. It's on Android now, but should be out on iOS soon.
  10. Jeff Goldblum

I guess this should bump this thread?
  11. SUPERHOT

I've been a bit turned off this game after seeing this aggressive viral marketing the team has put into the game. I was watching a few minutes of it on twitch and at the end of the game So of course people are going around using the phrase "It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years" as a badge of honor. To them it's an inside joke that proves they've beaten the game, but to me it feels gross. People are even using that phrase in their review titles. They also use the in-game chat lines to try to attack criticisms of the game. Which feels a bit more like they're trying to urge people to give it a chance beyond finishing the campaign and try out the other modes like endless and speedrun, but the entire structure of the game feels so manipulative. It tries to put the player on edge and feel like they're being manipulated, that mixing in messages that urge you the game you are playing is good, and that you should go spread the word feels wrong.
  12. Firewatch Spoiler Thread | Henry Two Hats

So is there any real branching going on in the game based on dialogue decisions? I was expecting that making decisions about reporting the teens to the cops and stuff like that would have an impact on the way the game played out, but it seems like the branching is very minimal.
  13. I just got stuck on the rope at the start of the game. I've tried reloading multiple times but it just leaves me holding the rope at the top of the gulch. I watched the Giant Bomb Quick Look, so I've seen how it should work. EDIT: ok it worked on my 3rd load. I swear i was mashing spacebar, but maybe I'm crazy.

  15. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

Oh wow. This Team Secret lineup is crazy: https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3hyipx/team_secret_announces_new_official_roster/
  16. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

If PPD said there were no problems playing with AUI, I'd still understand the move. Sounds like I was wrong about that statement in 2 ways. I was assuming (like a lot of other people) that RTZ is as abnoxious a team mate as his public persona. And I was also assuming that AUI was a calm member of the team. They don't appear to be shuffling the roster purely to get the "best player in dota", but to legitimately play with people they feel make up a better team. As for Fear playing support. I still question whether he'll be top tier, but TBH i should be giving him more credit. It's not like AUI was always position 4. And if Fear is playing support, maybe he'll be in a better position to assist the team. Which appears to be one of his biggest strengths. I still feel it's a bit of a risk if he's getting surgery, and they'll need a good position 4 backup. But if they were having issues with AUI then maybe he wasn't the best fit for that role.
  17. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

Also the AUI interview kinda credits PPD's brother with training them how to use techies at a competitive level. AUI definitely knew what he was doing with them, but it seemed like he credit team knowledge more than specifically "i'm the best techies player". He did say that no other team really knew what to do with them though.
  18. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

The AUI shuffle is still delivering. 2 hour interview with AUI about a lot of stuff: https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3hhqq2/reflections_with_aui_2000/ PPD gets flamed so hard he tells the straight dirt: http://peterpandam.blogspot.com.au/2015/08/post-ti5-blog.html?m=1 I'm dissapointed that PPD resorted to that kind of direct calling out of AUI's faults. But he's been under a lot of direct pressure for the shuffle by people that don't really understand what went on in the team.
  19. Dota 2 - Summer 2016 Roster Shuffles

I'm not sure Dendi will leave Na'vi, but it'd be pretty sweet if he did rejoin Puppey. Maybe they could pick up SingSing as well. I feel like EG's winning secret was the fact that people seemed to be calm and mature. Swapping out AUI for RTZ definitely throws that out the window. Now Charlie has to work with RTZ after this callout:
  20. Too bad the chat isn't captured, because that moment was even better live.
  21. One of the best Nick moments is when Nick accidentally revealed a livejournal page he forgot the password to: (it's in the Outro)
  22. Unity Questions Thread

So the entity component pattern that unity uses basically means that every game object in the scene has a list of components (monobehavior classes). You can achieve what you want a few ways, but one short answer is to say this.gameObject.GetComponent<CargoBay>() which would return the CargoBay component on the same game object as your other component.
  23. Man this is game is brilliantly scoped for a game jam. You've got the perfect control over finishing the game without risking the project due to creep. Also, execution is on point, well done man.
  24. Wizard Jam Song and Sound Bank

Good stuff, going through them now.
