  1. Since it's getting closer and closer, does anyone want to get some concrete teams down, or wait til the first day?
  2. oh boy oh boy oh boy
  3. I think i generally get where you're coming from. I'm never inclined to just sit down and blow through an anime like I used to be. I always mentally stop myself from doing it by making some argument about how its not "worth my time". Though everything I have seen, I have a pretty solid memory about. edit: also, I'm super up for the rotating cast of hosts, but i think the best discussion will be had by friends, or at least people who know each other and are familiar with each other's different tastes. Having maybe 2 or 3 constants in every episode would be good.
  4. anime

If the position hasn't been filled yet, I probably have enough time to put together the cast if we're doing that recording remotely thing. If we're not, I'm still up for attempting to save Twig's ears.
  5. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Goin to see Swans this weekend, super excited.
  6. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

This stuff may depend on the microphone you're using, but most likely you can fix this by going into your OS audio settings and lowering the capture volume for your microphone. You should be able to speak into the front at a normal or slightly higher than normal volume without peaking. A compressor can alleviate some of this after recording but if you compress anything too much itll start sounding really crunchy. Better to have a nice quality recording already before you go into the compressor. If you don't happen to have a pop filter, you may get a lot of wind from p sounds. I'd say this is a luxury however, and its not essential to go buy one if you don't have one (you can also DIY one). It goes without saying that you should record in a fairly quiet space. Mixing vocals is, very broadly speaking, compression and EQ. there's plenty of guides for mixing vocals but in any case you'll want to experiment to find what sounds good for the voice you're working with. It's a super powerful tool, and if the vocals are intended to be on top of some loud instrument or a lot of percussion, you can even make a shitty walmart mic sound inconspicuously decent with good mixing.
  7. anime

In terms of sound quality, I accidentally left my nice Yeti microphone in another city while visiting, but if any of this happens next month I will possibly have it back. Whether we do a new or old show, I think it should be at most a 13-episode series, just to start simple.
  8. anime

    no clue. lets make one
  9. Cities: Skylines

Downloaded the Hong Kong map, and tried to see how far I could get with 1 tile of land. Traffic is actually pretty decent, as in nothing backs up for longer than one intersection at most, and i got services everywhere. I actually didn't use anything better than a 4 lane in the whole city! Does anyone know if you can move from industrial to office zoning entirely? I know that commercial relies to some degree on industrial, so will it rob my stores of all their goods if I remove industry entirely from my city?
  10. If the Thumbs or anyone else is interested in the idea of cities that grow around their planning failures, check out this awesome series Unfinished London: It's cool that through being somewhat faithful to real life systems, Skylines is also incredibly enlightening.
  11. Cities: Skylines

Looking at good Cities Skylines interchanges eventually led to me just looking at real life interchanges, and it turns out everything is still ridiculous!!! Heres the High Five Interchange in my hometown, Dallas, which is indeed 5 levels high:
  12. Cities: Skylines

I find that this game is hard because I think it's hard to achieve the mental image of paradise that I want my city to be, and trying to match it. Even if the systems aren't that challenging, every slight road congestion prevents me from achieving a perfect coodopolis.
  13. Cities: Skylines

I'm actually starting to progress far enough to require building my own highways. Here are some awesome highway and interchange designs from the reddit.
  14. Cities: Skylines

I tried to create a very stark quality of life change in one of my "boroughs", and I think it came out pretty well.
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

yahoo screen seems to have really glitchy ad breaks, which sucks. but i did like the first two episodes.
  16. Cities: Skylines

Since you can rename buildings, people and everything else, The one thing that I REALLY REALLY want in this game is for the twitter to reference your custom names.
  17. this is an accurate slip
  18. anime

This is an interesting idea but I think although FLCL has a lot of obtuse japanese language jokes, its light enough of a plot and entertaining enough to be a good introduction to the medium. Do you guys think that the ideal anime introduction ought to be accessible to someone who has no knowledge of the source culture and free of esoteric references, or something that is full of that influence and more representative of most other anime? Or could it just be something that's really good?
  19. anime

It's been a while since I've seen I've seen the first season, but all that sounds about right to me. This shit is kind of there basically throughout all of the show I think, but Monogatari season 2 (after nise, after neko) is refreshingly less of that stuff. Amazingly, there are whole 6 episode arcs of that season where ararararagi doesn't even show up, and it really is awesome. The really noticeable structure of the first part of the show is obviously all about introducing these girls in the context of how they were "saved" by the dude. Then they start fleshing out most of these characters in a really cool way, I thought. edit: honestly, now that i think about the only thing I like about araragi is how he just gets shit on by the female characters. Also, after noticing somebody talk about it a few pages ago I sat down and rewatched FLCL in one sitting. The first three episodes were exactly the incredible, stylish and tonally perfect FLCL that I remember. The last half not so much, but still good. This happens with me a lot concerning these old classics, where the small non-plot focused character pieces are the episodes that I really stick with.
