Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics 2. I noted in the quitter's thread that I left StarTropics 1 pretty quickly and moved onto 2, which I had fond memories of. I think the memories hold up, but only b/c of a liberal usage of the emulator's quick save. Losing a life (yes, this game had lives for some odd reason) would take you back a few rooms in the 'dungeons' and remove all the items you gained. Brutal. While the mechanics don't evolve and would have the same problem as the first game where it feels I'm constantly going into the same dungeon, StarTropics 2 manages to stave off the fatigue by all the visual changes. The game has you traveling through time, meeting Cleopatra, Sherlock Holmes, Da Vinci and more, with each chapter changing enemies and areas to fit the theme. For instance, before you meet Da Vinci, you have to go through his basement. Instead of another dungeon with a bunch of enemies though, it's a trap-filled series of rooms with what looks to be like inventions. This thematic shifting was what I loved about the game as a kid, and it's still charming today. If I were to make a game, I feel like it would be directly drawing from StarTropic 2's best bits. I technically didn't finish the game, as the boss gauntlet at the end is really tough, but watching the last ten minutes on Youtube fulfilled me enough. If you're willing to play with save states to make the checkpointing a bit more modern, it's a fun game. A few notable facts about the game: - Last Nintendo licensed game to come out only on the NES. (Wario's Woods came out on both the NES and SNES afterwards.) - The game was designed by Genyo Takeda, Nintendo's hardware R & D guy who has been with the company since 1971. Dude was also credited for making the battery-backed memory on NES cartridges and helped design Punch Out!

    Harsh criticism.
  3. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

StarTropics. I have nostalgia for StarTropics II, but since I haven't played it since a kid, I was interested in going back to it. But first, I wanted to play the first game in the series b/c I never did. Ugh. I'm about 2-3 hrs in and what a b.s. game. I'm constantly spelunking into the same caves and fighting the same damned enemies and doing the same damn block jumping puzzle. The overworld has nothing interesting going on and none of the charm I remember ST II having. There's also a lot of false exits in the caves where it'll take you back to the beginning of the cave. This goes beyond annoying when the enemies respawn whenever you leave a room. Blergh. Skipping it. Moving onto StarTropics II. Hoping my memories of it hold up.

  7. Oh god. Oh god. If Objective Game Reviews had an exclusive interview with CS about their new game that came out just like an hour before the official press release went out... Tears of joy.

Gunpoint's last level does this. They talked about it during the Tone Control with Tom Francis. Maybe you heard it there?

Since you don't have any music experience, try Audiotool with the Tonematrix tool. You literally cannot hit any wrong notes. Watch this to get an example of what you can do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJifgHNBKgg (haven't posted a YT vid in a while so I forgot how to do it. sorry.) While I'm sure you could get someone here to make something like you posted (*cough cough hrmm* me *cough*), it's a neat thing if you want to try it out yourself.

"Based on theme image" makes me think that what I make has to include what's happening in the picture. Am I wrong here? Hrrm. Yeah.

  17. Poetry suggestions

Wallace Stevens' stuff is great. I've always felt like his writing was a challenge in that it asked me to really think about form, ideas, and metaphor. e.e. cummings also writes beautifully.
  18. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Kanye's College Dropout just celebrated its 10th anniversary this month. This dude made a retrospective of Kanye's work over the last ten years with his music inter-stitched with some interviews. It's pretty great as it crafts a narrative that goes against the popular one of Kanye just being a loud-mouthed idiot :
  19. I've been putting off getting into using Game Maker and actually starting a project, but now I feel that instructions have been placed at my feet and I'm just being lazy if I don't start. I appreciate this. I'll be using this for sure.
