I'm in the same boat. I thought the second game was more interesting than the first. The original Dawn of War was fun, because it was a pretty damn decent RTS that did a great job of adding Warhammer trappings. DoW II was a neat, weird game that I found more rewarding to play. I really don't like base building in fast-paced RTS games, so if it's going back in that direction, I'm less enthused. On the other hand, the building aspects even in the original weren't as onerous as in other genre mainstays. One reason it may not be getting a lot of discussion is that it's still in PR drip-feed mode. I think this community tends to wait until there's more to chew on. (Which is not to say that we shouldn't have a thread on it!)

That kind of shit will drive you mad. Color profiles, monitor calibration... Everything is always wrong. Different applications handle things totally differently. A jpeg may look one way in your editing program, then totally different in your photo viewer, and then again in a browser. I'm getting stressed out just thinking about it.

I remember that ad, but had no idea who it was (since he got famous later). He should totally be all "how you doin'" in that last shot. also, he was dreamy as shit in 1987.

Looking for TBS recommendations

I really feel you on that shit. I always love the first few missions in tactical games like Jagged Alliance, Fallout Tactics and Silent Storm, but they all reach a point where I'm spending more time as a quartermaster than a commander. Like seriously organizing lockers should not be my job. -
Pen and Paper and Roll20.net Games

I really want to try Apocalypse World or one of its offshoots. The Sprawl looks particularly cool. Also, a company called Lampblack & Brimstone has made some extensions to Dungeon World that seem neat. On the Burning Wheel tip, I have Burning Empires and Mouse Guard, but never tried either. Holy shit I have a lot of RPGs (and board games) that I've never played. I love RPGs, and I've been playing them since I was a kid. I kinda love all of them, even the bad ones. It's the best hobby. It's the one thing I've given up in the wake of becoming a dad that I really miss. Now that things have settled down, I need to get back into it! -
I share that pet peeve of a peeve. I mean, I totally get not wanting it to feel like you have no influence over things, or that there's no meaningful strategy, but there are plenty of dice-heavy games that reward strategic thinking and careful planning.

This may sound frivolous, but I want a fictional justification for the player in a game like this. There are so many games where the closest analog would be a disembodied god figure, but I want something more explicit (and interesting)! Like, maybe the AI core of the ship could have survived the crash, and everyone is following the computer's suggestions. It could even work for the neolithic scenario: a group of primitive humans finds a mysterious obelisk that teaches them a new way of life. They could worship it as a god, like the Feeders of Vaal in Star Trek. It would also have the knock-on effect of providing a justification for why the group never strays from that one spot on the map; maybe the computer is too heavy to move until the end-game technologies are researched.

It's a bit like miracle whip for those familiar with that, but with a mustardy element. Edit: didn't notice the new page, that was referring to salad cream

That looks like a frame out of a Universal Studios monster picture. Love it.

Ketchup on mac, fuck yeah. Regarding hot dogs in there, there's a local place (Brooklyn Mac) that makes a variant called the Coney Island, with sauerkraut and mustard in there, too. It's good.

I would never put it on good pizza, but if it's like some cardboard school cafeteria stuff, then sure.

Yeah, that's why I ended up redeeming the damned thing. It just adds to my distaste for "bonuses" like that. I mean, if the early game is tuned around having a certain kind of ship, then that should be the ship. Pre-order bonuses that stack the deck for the player in the early game seem kind of absurd and bad to me. There are a ton of games that give you, say, better weapons if you get the pre-order sucker edition or whatever, and it hurts the experience. It undermines the intended sense of progression, because the first bunch of times you get a new sword or gun (or race car) it's worse than the thing you started with. Tangent aside, I'm finding the game pretty interesting so far.

I was ready to poop all over it, but it does look alright I guess. Yeah, that's what I keep hoping for. I should play more Arcane Dimensions, that shit is tight.

It's also turning me off from Valve in general. I've given them a ridiculous amount of money through the years without realizing I was funding some kind of evil libertarian think tank. -

Oh yeah, I did want to add that Escape Velocity is awesome. If anyone is curious about them, the last game, Nova, is available for Windows and modern Mac OS, and there are plug-ins (mods, as mentioned in the podcast) that basically act as total conversions to recreate the other two games in the series. There have been a lot of open-ended space combat and trading games in that vein, but none have quite captured the fun of EV for me. -

There are so many layers to the dirtbag onion. These streamer/youtube guys just have absolutely no moral compass. Like, I know there are sleazy people out there, but it's still shocking when you see the kind of stuff people will do. The only part of this whole thing that I find amusing instead of saddening and angering is the absurd attempts at "apology." They're like, "I'm sorry that people felt misled; I will be more transparent in the future. I love you guys!" Yeah, you clearly love your subscribers and don't think of them as a bunch of suckers at all. Just seriously fuck all these people, and Valve, too. -
Idle Weekend July 2, 2016: Going Solo

Yes, I wanted to pop in here to give Danielle a pat on the back (assuming she reads these threads). If I tried to record one of these myself I'd psych myself out and shit the bed really hard. Danielle did the opposite of that! -

Oh man, loved the use of the goofy wizard running around from Time Traveler, that stupid Sega fmv game with the "holographic" mirror display. If I ever have the money and space to collect arcade machines, that one is on the short list. -
My hottest tip for Deus Ex is to cheat and max out all your stats immediately. The progression system is the worst; it's entirely punitive. JC is already supposed to be a super agent, but he can't hit the broad side of a barn with a gun until you spend a bunch of points? No, thanks. It doesn't feel like you're getting good, but that you're getting slightly less hobbled as time goes on. And even if you cheat to boost your stats, that still leaves the actual fun progression system in place: attaining new augmentations. One of the best things Human Revolution did was to get rid of the RPG-style stats and focus on augs. I know this goes way against your ethos with this thread, but I'm serious about cheating. There's so much incredible stuff in this game, but the beginning hours are an awful slog for no good reason. I never would have gotten to the good stuff without cheating.

Idle Thumbs 266: Memeify McCree
Salacious Snake replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
The Tarkovsky discussion made me think of Metal Gear and its use of ladders, most notably in Snake Eater. Out of context it probably seems ridiculous, but in the game, it's effective. You've just been through some serious shit, and the change in pacing and mood is wild.
