  1. Episode 292: Advanced Squad Leader

Graviteam Tactics, maybe? I read that its UI is abysmal, and that was in comparison to Combat Mission, which I find pretty damn clunky to begin with. I do enjoy CM, and am particularly looking forward to Black Sea; I liked Shock Force in spite of its various problems. I always wanted to get into Squad Leader, and I'm sure I bought some stuff for it through the years, but I never got up the gumption to put it on the table. I've been eyeballing some of its more recent imitators, like Ghost Panzer as maybe more user-friendly entry points into the genre. I'm excited to listen to this episode on my commute home today.
  2. Where in the World - Idle Thumbs Map

This is fun. If more of us show up in New York, we should meet up at Barcade or something. There's a new one in Manhattan if you don't want to keep it real in . It's gettin' crazy out here.
  3. Nintendo 3DS

OK. I was worried that it wouldn't actually be tied to my ID, since it's there already without me having to purchase it on the store while logged into my account. I'd feel better if they just gave me a download code! I'll probably get a black system anyway, since the MH one looks kinda goofy to me.
  4. Nintendo 3DS

I'm a little confused about how the system transfer shit works with regard to pre-installed games. I kinda want the Monster Hunter bundle, but it comes with the game pre-installed. I feel like once I'm done transferring and I have my big old sd card in there, the game will be obliterated and I'll have no way to redownload it, because it's Nintendo.
  5. Idle Thumbs 193: General Interest

The way the episode ended, I assumed my download was broken, so I redownloaded it. Dagnabbit! That Disney stuff is insane. I'm related to someone who is in some kind of managerial position at Disney World; I'm not sure what he's doing now. For a long time, though, he was in charge of the Moroccan restaurant (also, he is Moroccan). I suspect he could shed some light on the mystery of the Moroccan house, though it could be weird for me to bring up since I probably haven't spoken to him in more than 20 years.
  6. Non-video games

If anyone here appreciates the extraterrestrial lifeforms from the Alien franchise and enjoys challenging cooperative games, then I wish to recommend the awkwardly titled Legendary Encounters: An ALIEN Deck Building Game. It's a deckbuilder in the sense of Dominion or Ascension. I didn't understand that bit of jargon until recently, thinking that building a deck referred to what you did prior to playing a game of, say, Magic: The Gathering. But no, it's one pool of cards, and the central mechanic of the game is that of acquiring cards from that pool to shuffle into your deck. Anyway, this takes some generally well-trod mechanical stuff (most directly from Legendary, the Marvel super hero thing) and puts in aliens and Jonesy. It's something where you might expect a superficial paintjob, but they came up with a new framework for the action that makes it exceptionally evocative of the theme. Hidden critters and hazards of various sorts march inexorably toward the players, faces are hugged and chests are bursted (which can lead to a dead player reentering the game as a baddie). There are even traitors working for the company among you! I doubt it'll go down as a classic, and I'm sure there are far better games in this style out there, but it uses its theme really well, it's easy to play, and it has a surprising amount of variety, thanks to multi-layered objectives and hidden agendas. Plus, I really like ~xenomorphs~. It super sucks to organize the cards when you first open it, though.
  7. Gib as in giblets gif as in gee eye eff Soft Gs for everyone.
  8. HOTS... no the other HOTS. The Lords Management one damn it!

I fart around in this once in a while. Azmodan is fun. I'm almost never physically situated to play PC games anymore these days, so it's rare, but TraumaHound#1840
  9. Photos of things

I love it! I too am afraid of going overboard sometimes, but it's liberating to just fucking do it. Like, I agonize over using synth effects that can come off as "cheesy," and then I listen to a Major Lazer song and I realize I need to stop being afraid. As you can see in my last dog picture, I am loosening up a little when it comes to messing with the colors. My instinct is always to try to make things look as close to how I perceive them in person, but it's fun to stylize a bit.
  10. Photos of things

Black dogs are hard to photograph edit: of course I have to include a new pic of my own dog:
  11. Music of the Year!

Most listened this year regardless of vintage: Michael Jackson - Bad Most enjoyed album from last year that I didn't discover until this year: Czarface - Czarface (It's Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric) Been meaning to listen to, but haven't gotten around to it Negativland - It's All in Your Head I notice that none of my categories are a solid recommendation of something current. I need to get back on top of this shit!! Wait! I thought of one as I was typing this: Pretty rad dumb song from this year that I listened to a ton and really like: Stanton Warriors feat. Eboi - Jerk That https://soundcloud.com/punksmusic/stanton-warriors-jerk-that-feat-eboi-original-mix
  12. I listened to the first two episodes, and I like it!
  13. I'm excited for this version. I already owned the original via GoG (and a disc somewhere), so it's all gravy if they improve things. (The GoG version is being updated for free.) On paper, this is all I really wanted out of the remake, anyway. Better resolution support and configurable controls; gamepad seems like it'll be a fine way to play. CUTTER SLADE
  14. Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby

"Woof" as an interjection just makes me think of a line in The Crow. "Quit hoggin' the pipe, man!" God, it's like being transported back to high school.
  15. Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby

Great cast! I'm curious about VA-11 HALL-A now; what the heck is going on in there? Seeing it mentioned on blogs and stuff, I think people were giving it credit for purposefully (and hopefully thoughtfully) exploring the issues it brings up, but the proof is in the pudding. Definitely want to check it out. Also, to be slightly pedantic, people generally classify different dog varieties as breeds rather than species, although the taxonomy of dogs and related creatures is pretty muddled and probably could stand to be revised!
  16. Grim Fandango being remastered for PS4 and Vita

I am once again stoked to the max. Frothing demand, etc.
  17. Post your face!

It's hard to take selfies with a long focal length
  18. Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift (or Pokémon), but I know I like this forum post.
  19. Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

Well, that was insane. There's an astonishing amount of audio here!
  20. Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

I had never heard of this Beppo business before; I am not at all surprised to find that there is one in Times Square and nowhere else around here. Come to NYC, "home to nearly one thousand of the finest and most diverse haute cuisine restaurants in the world, according to Michelin," but find comfort in the mid-tier chain restaurant that you recognize from your hometown. Those places can come in handy when you have large groups that need to be accommodated on short notice. I have good memories of swarming Dallas BBQs with people from Something Awful, getting humongous frozen cocktails and bad food.
  21. Twin Peaks Rewatch 5: The One-Armed Man

I love watching the receptionist crack up in the background during the llama take. I've watched that scene so many times.
  22. Is this game title bad?

    It seems fitting to me!
  23. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: Spacey Face

Hahah, yeah, this exo-suit was designed by fools! It should be able to sense my dangerously rapid descent and compensate automatically! I blame Kevin Spacey.
  24. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

I've been seeing a lot of reactions from people who have review copies.
  25. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

It's refreshing to be made aware of a big game by people reacting positively to it, rather than being clobbered with marketing. I knew nothing about this game prior to this week aside from the fact that Bioware had another Dragon Age thing in the works, to be released sometime in the future. I'm so down for this. It's like the opposite of Assassin's Creed Unity.
