  1. Interesting, Patrick leaving kotaku. I don't see him going back to GB, so joining Austin at Vice seems likely possibility.
  2. Editing CSS for Twine

the built in html/js/css inspector in chrome or firebug in firefox is all i've ever needed for modifying css. right click on a page element and pick inspect or inspect with firebug, then a panel all the way on the right should show the css rules that govern any page element. they can be tweaked/adjusted on the fly there (obviously changes can't be saved from the browser, but you can preview how something will look). If you're adjusting a numerical value firebug will even let you nudge it with cursor keys once you have it selected.
  3. San Francisco Thumb Recs

As someone who went to Cal at a particular time, it was a thing to get hopped up on mushrooms or acid and hit up the exploratorium. sighs wistfully about the availability and cheapness of acid in ye olden days
  4. Where's your head at? Headlander thread

i bought this but won't have a chance to have a crack at it until probably tonight. it looks preeettty great tho. edit: got in about an hour an half maybe. it doesn't disappoint. I like that it's not super difficult, so if that's something you're looking for, maybe that's a caveat. Nothing super strenuous in terms of figuring out where to go or how to get there. Upgrades doled out a reasonable pace. Combat is, well, it's not exactly always easy (though it mostly has been), but the penalty for death is low due to good checkpointing.
  5. Question: Alternative to Twine for a Nascent Coder

I don't know that they necessarily let you do anything that you couldn't do in Twine with some custom CSS/javascript, but as far as interactive fiction goes... for visual novel type things: https://www.renpy.org/ other CYOA engines: https://www.choiceofgames.com/make-your-own-games/choicescript-intro/ http://undum.com/ http://nitku.net/blog/2014/11/introducing-texture/ http://www.storynexus.com/s full parser stuff: http://inform7.com/ http://www.tads.org/tads3.htm these (and others) are mentioned in this Emily Short blog post
  6. Necropolis

That sounds like it is shifting the goalposts on the expectations for a roguelike (probably because roguelike-likes have been more popular recently?). For instance, Nethack and its ilk randomly shuffled up what items did on each play such that faq/wiki-ing what items did wouldn't even be possible.
  7. Upgrades and Progression

I don't have much to say here, but I think the example of metroidvanias in general might be of instructive(?). I guess they fall under the category of "develop a routine of taking detours and switching their focus." Partly what I like about metroidvanias is that they will typically show you as-yet-inacessible areas, so it serves as a kind of teaser. There are times as well where it could be a kind of a puzzle where the game will have areas accessible with upgrade A and areas accessible with upgrade B, but there might be a third set of areas accessible with upgrade A and B used in combination in some not-immediately-obvious way.
  8. SGDQ 2016

The thing with daggerfall is that was just the default experience of playing the game, you weren't looking for glitches for your speedrun strats, there were times you just plain needed to use a noclip cheat to even get to the quest object in some of those randomized dungeons.
  9. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

a sprinkler spontaneously burst in my house and this month has been a nightmare because I've been sleeping over at my folks place and commuting back here to let the workmen in and to work (my home office was unaffected), but i work nights until ~10:30 to 11:00 and these workmen all want in around 8:30 in the morning so my sleep situation has been...not ideal and yeah that's my "my dog ate my homework" excuse and I'm sticking to it.
  10. UK Thumbs

I don't disagree, but where this breaks down is when the people to whom political decisions have been outsourced make the decision that a referendum is be a good idea.
  11. E3 2016: Content Experience

Kojima has been playing a long con. At the next big press event he'll reveal that he is a baby named Joakim Mogren piloting an adult human sized mech suit. He will be joined on stage by Dr. Sergio Cannavaro. They will say "Kept you waiting, huh? Bet you're ashamed of your words and deeds now!" also "Nanomachines!" DEATH STRANDING = ADDING NET TRASH = HATING STERN DAD #wakeupsheeple
  12. E3 2016: Content Experience

I'm fully on board with the third person interpretive dance genre
  13. The McElroy Family of Products

so for any hamilton fans out there, this was apparently a thing that happened: https://twitter.com/griffinmcelroy/status/742208275408510976
  14. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

I'm about 8 or 9/11.5 of the way done in terms of lines/words, but i thinking bringing it home is going to prove disproportionately difficult. we'll see. I have no plans to put anything on medium btw. I hope just posting it here is ok.
  15. For reals? If you want to pick a character, why even play that mode? does. not. compute.
  16. I had not seen that video and I matched into a game where everyone apparently had because they were all junkrat...so I just rolled with it and we won. Improbably, two matches later I matched into another game where everyone bar one spoilsport holdout (who went soldier 76) went with Pharah and we won that too. It wasn't even the same people. So apparently everyone picking a single character is a just a thing now.
  17. update: I am warming a bit to zarya and junkrat having had some (well not a lot, but by my standards) success with them in the random hero mode. still end up as lucio most of the time in the quickplay because often no rando wants to be a healer. I remain terrible with everyone else. Think I still haven't played as Genji, Torbjorn, Rhinehardt, or WInston yet. edit: Wait no that's wrong, Genji I've tried and am terrible with; Hanzo's the one I haven't tried.
  18. As someone who has not been playing a whole hell of a lot but has spent most of that time as Lucio, I can say this has never really happened to a degree that I felt compelled to switch out. edit: oh as for team composition, if you get yourself comfortable with at least one character from a few different roles, you can just defer your character selection until the last second to see which would help balance the team more.
  19. Idle Fiction Jam - Rumours and Hearsay

ok i have an idea, I am calling dibs on it even though I dunno if I will get it done in time plus it is exceedingly unlikely anyone was going for the same thing: it will be a prose poem about Tehching Hsieh's Cage Piece edit: posting about it increases the chances that I'll actually follow through with it by at least 20%.
  20. Yeah I tried out pharah's flying and the cooldown on the jump feels too long and the floating/hover feels like it makes you too easy a target; I prefer just raw ground speed. Genji's one of the ones I haven't tried yet though.
  21. ok despite my reticence about competitive only shooters, I succumbed to peer pressure and bought in (dc_juv3nal on ps4 if anyone else is playing on there). Haven't tried out every character but of the ones I've tried, strongly preferring Tracer and Lucio for footspeed.
  22. Mouth Feel - The Summer Wizard Cocktail Jam

The first few installments of this:http://scoutmagazine.ca/2014/03/28/drinker-building-an-excellent-home-bar-5-bottles-and-1-quality-cocktail-at-a-time/ may be of interest as they cover the "essentials" first and branch outwards from there. edit: oh on mobile at least that first one doesn't appear to link to the others, but this 9th one links to previous ones: http://scoutmagazine.ca/2016/06/03/drinker-how-to-build-a-strong-home-bar-one-drink-and-five-bottles-at-a-time-part-9/

  24. I haven't watched any of the current season, but there's an interesting article about the cancellation of person interest on buzzfeed which makes it all sound a bit mind-boggling given it was still posting decent audience numbers. Edit: to be clear, the article explains why that's the case, but that the system is rigged in such a way that this kind of situation develops is messed up in the first place.
