the melee attack is situationally useful early on because it can bust through (some of?) the locked outpost doors when all you have is the mining laser (which won't scratch them) and no bolter/grenade launcher thing. It's slow though so you're best off clearing out any sentinels around before you do it.

Maybe he is referring to the prejudice that in the real world would prevent a cat from running a munitions dealing business. -

re: language influencing culture versus language influencing thought it's rather a case of six of one, a half dozen of the other isn't it? it seems to me lived experience influences thought and culture is part of lived experience, no? -

"Just make sure to complete [The Beginner's Guide] within your Steam refund window..."
juv3nal replied to pabosher's topic in Video Gaming
Yeah ditto not sure what you mean. But to elaborate re: the suspension of disbelief, I guess it's of a piece with having the same attitude towards film/movie: I (and I think I can probably say "we" in a universal sense) don't question "omg how is there a camera there recording this" when viewing a period piece set before the invention of motion picture cameras, for instance. It's just a thing you take for granted, right? -

Yeah I'm basically where you're at with this I think. For whatever reason it basically falls under the category of getting a pass for suspension of belief purposes for me. -
ah ok. thanks.

I actually looked up the comment because the way mikemariano had paraphrased it didn't make any sense to me. I think the commenter's point is the conceit about Wreden (narrator) having a breakdown "live" at the end of the game rings hollow because the whole thing had to be recorded, compiled, tested for bugs etc. To put it in other words, it's a version of this old Monty Python and the Holy Grail bit: where the python bit plays it for laughs (why would Joseph inscribe aaagggh in the wall if he is being murdered), but Wreden (real life person) doesn't so much as wink about how it complicates the ostensibly spontaneous emotional outpouring at the end of the game. -

hmmm I guess I could install python even though I don't/won't be needing it for work and I have an (irrational, I know I know) bias against significant whitespace. I had been working on my own javascript based one (lots of code stolen but just running it off a single file, locally so I wouldn't be hosting it anywhere) but wasn't entirely satisfied with the results. That may be down to choice of corpus though, really (In a fit of supreme narcissism I'd decided a good idea would be to feed it all my own previous writing scrunched together).

What kind of method are you using to do this? Is there some web based tool or are you having to code your own?

I will ditto this. I also finished Bound, which is in a similar vein, but slightly less good. Still would recommend even though it doesn't stand up in a side by side comparison. Maybe give it some space if you've played Abzu or the ThatGameCompany titles super recently.

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)
juv3nal replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Idle Banter
I am recently infatuated with this song. I just want to blast it in my car on repeat 5eva. Jean's verse could stand to be louder in the mix if I want to be nitpicky about it but that backing track is just immense/amazing/etc. -

Reigns is super good y'all. http://nerial.co.uk/reigns/#more It's kind of a resource management kingdom sim consisting entirely of binary choices (swipe right and left) but somehow manages to pack in a surprising amount of depth (including a a dueling system that's an homage to insult swordfighting)

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
juv3nal replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I don't hate Dan, but I think the only way this works out well is if the rest of the GBEast crew pivots more intellectual as a counterpoint to Dan instead of letting him drag them down to their level.- 1367 replies
