  1. Destiny

I tried it out last night on the ps3 when the beta opened up and liked it. It's pretty. I'm neither a huge halo guy or fps guy in general but the shooting felt good. The enemies felt more active (reactive?) than borderlands 2 (the last fps I spent any significant time with). The grenade was a bit of an adjustment coming from BL2 because in BL2, the grenade kinda goes where you're looking, but in this if you want more distance you have to look up a bit to arc it. Other players (i.e. not people you're intentionally grouped with) being around is a little weird because sometimes a dude will steal a kill or two.
  2. Areal (aka S.T.A.L.K.E.R. / Metro 3.0)

How would informing the scammer prevent them from moving it to a different place?
  3. I feel Kane is like the first talkie film or the first colour film, or maybe even if both of those things happened at once in the same film. Vastly important and influential, sure, but however many years on, no one should bat an eye if a film released today is in colour and has audio. Arguably, nowadays it is of more note if a film does not do a lot of the things that Kane did. For example, Malle's Vanya on 42nd street, which is literally "just a play captured on film" (which was a criticism levelled at films made in the style of pre-Kane films in the aftermath of Kane). (unless you've an aversion to Chekhov, Vanya on 42nd is pretty great btw)
  4. Full disclosure, I haven't actually watched Satantango so I can't tell you whether its worth 7 hours of viewing, but in general I am a fan of leadenly paced stuff: Tarkovsky in particular, but also what Bela Tarr stuff I have seen like Werckmeister Harmonies and The Man from London. I think it's maybe a different kind of pleasure than that of being told a story. Satantango is rather highly regarded by respectable critics though. I mean you could maybe make the case that this is some kind of Stockholm Syndrome or sunk cost fallacy situation at work, but I dunno. Tarr has said Which I think is exciting in it's own way. Werckmeister Harmonies is much more manageable in length but from what I've read it's largely an expression of the same aesthetic. (it isn't, though, available in it's entirety on youtube from what I gather).
  5. I don't have anything to add beyond what Chris said about the other films, but Kane is a weird case because all of the things that make it "great" have been internalized and can be seen in use, not just in other "great" films, but in basically any modern film all the way down to the schlockiest tripe you care to name. So if you're not coming from a context of having been fed a diet of exclusively pre-Kane films, then IMO there really isn't that much to recommend it. Welles' performance is fine, but the story is ehh and what else have you got? How do you feel about (wikipedia)?
  6. It's mentioned near the beginning of this btw:
  7. Nintendo 3DS

I don't regret completing the game but
  8. "I know 2 things about Dumbledore and 1 thing about Snape." BEST
  9. Feminism

So about the giant bomb hiring situation, here's me venting a bit because I can't be bothered to sign up for an account over there. A lot of folks over there who are quick to defend the hires that were made raise the notion that "well do you think they should have hired female/poc candidate x instead if they were not the most qualified candidate" and there's a lot of strawman-directed hedging on the other side (ostensibly my? side of the fence) going "no one is saying you should hire someone who isn't qualified because obviously there are plenty of women who have the qualifications for the job" entirely sidestepping this issue of "most qualified." But here's the thing: you absolutely should hire someone who is not the most qualified. When one of your metrics of being qualified is experience in senior positions (I mean I don't know, but I'm a guess that's kind of important), the only reason marginalized people are less qualified is because they've been systematically denied opportunities to hold those positions in the past. If you pretend you're starting from a blank slate when making a hiring decision right now, you're only perpetuating the problem since marginalized people are already starting from a point of disadvantage.
  10. Feminism

Which is good for what it is, but they don't control twitter (nor should they be expected to). What they need to do is take a harder line on their own forums and start banning people, because last I looked there's still some pretty gross stuff there.
  11. Dune

    Herbert talking about Dune: http://www.tombsofkobol.com/classic/dune-article-01.html
  12. Dune

There's a lot to dislike about that movie but one thing Lynch pulls that I wish we saw more of is the voiceover-as-thought-bubble thing. I thought it was a really clever/interesting thing and I'll be damned if I can come up with another live action example that does it except in the cases where it's a single character e.g. the inner thoughts of a noir P.I. or just a narrator which obvs is not what I'm talking about.
  13. Dune

I've read all of them (aside from the ones done by his son) and conversely I had the worst time with God Emperor.
  14. Books, books, books...

    ooh that sounds neat.
  15. Versu

I'm roughly in the same boat you are in that I am excited about this news but don't have an ipad, except I never played the earlier one.
  16. Night In The Woods

Some coverage: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/06/11/you-can-never-go-home-night-in-the-woods/ http://killscreendaily.com/articles/charming-melancholy-night-woods-picks-where-gone-home-left/ don't really tell anything you wouldn't already know if you've been following the game. oh also this report-from-e3 comment from Scott:
  17. Nintendo 3DS

Not to hold up metacritic as a bar of quality, but a 69 there doesn't seem that encouraging. Also, I guess there is something fundamentally appealing about the "chibified dude" that i prefer over the screenshots I see of heroes of ruin? The lower detail textures/models seem better suited to/easier to "read" on the handheld screen size?
  18. Nintendo 3DS

The appeal to me is arpg in the animal crossing/rune factory hybrid. I guess that's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. For that matter, what are some good action rpgs on the 3ds? There aren't any on my radar really.
  19. Nintendo 3DS

    fantasy life looks pretty amazing
  20. so apparently this is a thing: http://www.reddit.com/r/LuigiDeathStares
  21. Night In The Woods

Yeah no stretch goals was a really good call IMO. "No stretch goals" to me says "hey we pitched the thing we wanted to make. you guys throwing more money at us shouldn't change what we wanted to make" which I am totally on board with.
  22. Night In The Woods

Well it's too late to back now, but it's coming to ps4:
  23. It would be if they hadn't shown up last time.
  24. What to look out for in employee contracts

If by "exclusivity", dibs means non-compete clauses, it depends where you are. For example you're pretty safe in California.
  25. handful of screens over at NeoGAF It doesn't really give an impression of what it would play like, but it's pretty at any rate.
