I don't think so? I think it's pretty common for even the big outlets to factor in "this is worse than/better than/doesn't change anything from last year's madden/call of duty/etc." am I totally off base about that?

For me it's that it takes as a priori true some of the claims that have been made against Quinn. As an example, supporting the FYC indegogo is only a "great idea" if the allegations about Quinn being a compulsive liar are true and her criticisms of it are false. also how is this not gross:

Seriously? You're going to go there? I can't name a male online personality who has received a rape threat. So I dunno, maybe they all get them and never talk about them, or maybe you're full of shit.

Depending on the audience (of the review), I'd think the opinion of someone invested could be far more valuable than that of someone new to a series. For instance, I can only imagine that a football manager grognard is going to be much more interested in the opinion of someone who can tell them what the current iteration does differently than the previous ones versus the opinion of a neophyte to the series (and frankly, there aren't that many football management sims out there so if they haven't played a recent football manager, it probably means they're a neophyte to the genre as well).

I'm a guess you meant your link to go here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gaymercon/gx3-everyone-games

I think I have mentioned this before, but it's not super out of left field. Cineastes and bibliophiles are things. edit: and beat to the punch by Bjorn.

It's not so much the achievements/scores that help but the thin veneer of a narrative thrown on top of the whole thing? So in this one I guess the idea is you're doing these motions to control and/or power a Pacific Rim style robo suit? I mean it's silly, but I find it helps.

Aside from the burpees, which whatever muscles those use I just don't have (or maybe don't have any strength left in after the squats), the amount of reps is not actually that terrible (they're split into 2 sets of half the numbers I listed above, intermixed, which helps since you're not stressing the same parts continuously), but their target time is just eh I have no idea what kind of fitness level they're targeting but it ain't even in the same area code as mine.

I'd just like to say that my earlier comment was just an offhand reflection on an observed commonality among these misogynist jerks on twitter (that if they weren't the defaul egg avatar, they were 2/3 or more likely to be anime avatars). I've nothing against anime, heck, I'll take Cat Soup and Paranoia Agent over any Western animation I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.

So I tried another fitness app. This one i swear is trying to kill me. I'm an out-of-shape nerd and you want me to do 60 crunches, 20 burpees, 60 squats, 40 pushups and assorted random low impact crap (jogging in place, shadow boxing) all in 17 minutes?!?
-
omg thank you yes why are the jerks always with the anime avatars?

So I dunno if this has been mentioned before but what I've played of The Journey Down (I've just bought the second chapter but haven't started it) is pretty great. The first chapter is free on ios at the moment and on deep discount on steam because they just released the second chapter. They get a bigger cut if you buy through their site, but the first chapter is not discounted correspondingly to the steam price. There's also an old lo fi version of the first chapter for free here.

I work partially in the field of financial reporting and the thing about disclosures (which we do when reporting anything other than raw data) is that they are disclosures of investments. That means if a stock does well, our employees who hold positions in that stock stand to make money from it. Last I heard ain't no game review site that pays a reviewer more if a game they reviewed well does well sales-wise.

I feel like this is probably giving jerks too much credit for even caring. It ought to be blatantly self evident why this debate isn't interesting when people's lives are being invaded and destroyed: people's lives are being invaded and destroyed.

see also Plus, outside the games field at least, in design, and graphic design in particular, the resistance to contests, competitions and otherwise spec work is well entrenched and understood and has been for a long time. Certainly there are arguments to be made about why it is sometimes okay or whatever, but anyone setting up such a contest needs to understand and address concerns beforehand. A very recent example is from the Dreamfall chapters kickstarter where they quickly walked back a contest to have backer created music in the game.

Did you not get the memo? Governments and similar institutions are incredibly fragile and any intrepid indie game developer could cripple one by throwing shade on twitter.

Betrayals by Charles Palliser (of Dickensian pastiche Quincunx fame) is pretty great y'all.

Eidolon -- why not take a long walk in post-post-apocalyptic Washington?

It's had some fairly favorable coverage on giantbomb and rps: if it's not doing well, maybe that's a sign of some degree of oversaturation in the survival genre? -
It's academic which may not be to everyone's taste, but gamestudies.org just put out a new issue.

I already mentioned this in the books, books, books thread, but if you're at all interested in something super gimmicky, I'm a fan of S. or The Ship of Theseus. http://www.neontommy.com/news/2013/11/book-review-s It's packed with 2(possibly more) interlocutors writing in different ink/style in the marginalia, a ton of postcards/newspaper clippings, even a codewheel. Kinda like the bastard child of A. S. Byatt's Possession, House of Leaves, and Nick Bantock's Griffin and Sabine stuff?

Did another run. If you take a "hover ship" from I think...Yokohama to Honolulu something interesting happens.

Just completed my first full trip with 7 days to spare. I don't feel I really have much in the way of strategic-lessons-learned as much of it seems tied up in random number generators? 1) In my aborted attempt I attempted to cross Russia which seemed to take longer than than the one I finished which used the Suez route 2) Plan, and if a departure time is a few days out, often it will be better to use that time to hit up the bank for more funds instead of haggling for an earlier departure. but beyond that it all seems a bit of a crapshoot? One nit is that occasionally your interactions will net you a "You are now courageous/suave etc." but there is zero transparency about where those attributes have an effect on subsequent interactions (I mean presumably they do, but maybe they don't, who knows?). The narrative scenarios are really excellent though and it seems like there are a lot of them as it tells you that you visited x out of y countries at the end and I think I hit maybe ~22/144 I think? And there are unique vignettes for each port of call, I would have to imagine.

oh man i did the exact same thing in a different location (with the added kick of, I think, not figuring in the added cost of the hotel for the extra waiting time?) and started over, pretty much certain that i had screwed myself beyond hope for recovery. Godspeed!
