Coincidentally, this is a loose metric of mine for deciding on whether to impulse buy an ios title I'm vaguely interested in but on the fence about. I don't go out and get fancy coffee that often, but when I do it tends to run to $5-$6 because I take it with soy, so if a game comes in under that I'll often take a chance on it, but something that comes in at $8 has a much harder time ending up on my phone.

I finished it. It's pretty short (I've seen people say they got through it in half an hour, but it's hard for me to say for sure since I split it up into multiple sessions; I'd be inclined to guess closer to an hour) and while the general mechanic is pretty simple to get once you have your hands on it, it doesn't communicate well the one mechanic they add later on where you can reuse frames (whose state can change due to the person running through and interacting with ti) while the playthrough is ongoing. I think the trial and error (a failed run through a scene can reveal certain interactions) is part of what they expect you to do to get through it. Felt I got my money's worth, but there's nothing to replay for so if you're worried about money/time value maybe wait for a sale.

Goat Simulator: Queen of Chaos, Bringer of Destruction
juv3nal replied to heybeardo's topic in Video Gaming
It's not april fools so I have no idea what to make of this (I've long uninstalled it so I haven't checked it out, but it is free): http://store.steampowered.com/news/15024/ Not a roguelike, but close? There is a "rouge" class apparently? If it weren't for dragon age inquisition taking all my time, it is just kooky enough that I'd think about reinstalling to check it out.- 16 replies

Fraser's The Golden Bough http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Bough is probably the seminal book on the topic, but it naturally comes with the prejudices and biases of its time.

Welp, looks like I dodged a bullet in not preordering.

There are a lot of imo valid criticisms, not the least of which is, if they don't have the spine to call gamergate out by name, how the heck is that going to make anyone else feel any safer?

#TakeAwayTheHalos seems to have more or less run out of steam now, but it was briefly a thing

They got back to me, apparently the problem is caused by having the phone in zoomed mode. I switched out of it and sure enough it works. They said an update is in the works.

I bought this right when it launched, but it won't run on my iphone 6/ios 8.1 (it is supposed to be universal). Have been emailing back and forth with simogo support but they don't seem to be able to replicate the issue.

Interactive Fiction/Text Adventures (and their engines)
juv3nal replied to Ben X's topic in Video Gaming
(from that IF Comp) Creatures Such as We is pretty good. It's a dating sim/roman a clef about Bioware. It touches on stuff like the Activision acquisition, the dissatisfaction over the ending to ME3, and the "just pick the right options to get sex/love" nature of the romances in their games.- 61 replies

I got it. Am working my way through all the classes kind of evenly and am enjoying it.

I mean that's partly my point. That's largely where the gaters are ruining your word. If you're not engaging and speaking back there, that's letting then do so unopposed.
-
That's an admirable goal, but you could spend 24 hours a day arguing with gamer misogynists on twitter and make not a perceptible dent in attitudes. I don't have that kind of time. edit: though maybe more importantly than the time investment, I'd find the whole endeavour crushingly depressing.

Counterpoint, it's entirely possible to play a lot of games, attach a great deal of importance to them, even make them as your vocation while also choosing not to attach this 'gamer' label to yourself. It's just a word; if its meaning has been tainted by a bunch of misogynists, why cling to it?

Mainly Destiny on PS4 and Fantasy Life on the 3DS and whatever interesting looking free indie thing pops up in my rss feed (recently Obra Dinn demo, cat petting simulator 2014). Also still plugging away at that kittens incremental game, if that can really be said to be playing. edit: Wait, what? I was way past that in less than 2 weeks before I gave up on it. Never spent any ascensions crystals though.
