  1. Garriott on the Moon

Who's law is that? My personal colonization law is if its 384000 km away from any government, whoever actually stands on it and has the most guns gets the claim. So yeah, I'm anticipating for some territorial disputes in 2020 and then the eventual secession from whatever earthly government trys to control us; whether it be under my own banner or fighting for lord british and his moon castle in 2040. edit: Flash thought; Richard Garriot designs bioshock 3 as his mien kampf about an illusive billioniare building new rapture on the moon which in turns is the highest grossing product ever, earning him trillions in royalties in which he goes and builds new rapture and a castle on the moon.
  2. Trouble on Blobolonia

I'm not arguing, I'm saying this game art looks fantastic and if they kept with the game-play of the original I'm sure it's gold. The only arguement here is your impression of it's influence, but I'm not the one arguing with that, just a emoticon lament on how people made that connection. I could agree with the idea that the decision to make it a more illustrative direction could be based on the fact braid exists and was successful. What I will do later is go into why this game looks great and cite the actual influences it stems from that are could have potentially been used by hellman as well.
  3. Trouble on Blobolonia

:(:(:(:(:( I saw a video of this a year ago and thought it looked pretty fantastic, one day I hope titles like this can get a little more animation budget for some more keys, but aside from that I think they've nailed the art, it's a far cry from Braid.
  4. Game design advice

I remember reading a book that pretty much condensed the first year of game design I took in school (It was a shitty course mainly because it took a year and it was summed up in one book that took a week to read) so I'll try looking that up. Also read Remos blog, I remember forwarding it to a friend interested in some stuff because I think chris went into some 101 basics at one point and I started sending them to the level designers at work (I'm a peach to work with) because I felt they were missing fundamentals on what they were making. I think it was the first edition of this: http://www.amazon.com/Game-Design-Practice-Wordware-Developers/dp/1556229127/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269351876&sr=8-14 edit; Ok i was thinking of someone else about level design 101, but I do remember this from chris, I seriously got on board with this train of thought and have been designing make believe projects based on the principle ever since. http://chrisremo.com/bloggin/?p=3

And behind the fist pumper is...
  7. Red Dead Redemption

Honestly, in a non normal gameplay mode, I'd love to have seen a giant mechanical spider... I really wanted a good western game, there is no doubt this is it(I played a bit of the pre beta and it was very much gta western) my friend just played the current build and said it was amazing... so yeah. But I'm wondering with so few successful western titles if anyone would take a chance on fantasy western(ie big mechanical spider) because that'd be pretty neat too. Or play as a time traveler or something, doesn't seem to be enough of that in games(waits for ten people to list off 100 games that proves me wrong on that)
  8. Life

Honestly I'd vote for the communist party if they just called themselves the communist party. Instead, at least in Canada, they have a nice way of calling themselves communist without the word; to me that's like tricking people. Glenn Beck really? Man, I think I'd have to beat up my dad if he believed in that, but I'd have to use a bat so he knows this isn't just one of his regular beatings. My dad is pretty conservative but he's not insane enough to follow Beck and the nutjobs. Feel bad for ya man, that's a tough situation.

  10. God of War

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. Granted I never got through either 1 or 2, but compelling story? From what I gathered you play the biggest asshole in mythology and the only reason your an asshole is to confirm your an asshole; the pr machine calls it "badass" but the guy is a dick and just yells at the top of his lungs how much of a dick he is to confirm it. Nice visuals and alright game play though, but never held my interest long enough to finish any of them.
  11. As much as I like Goldblum, my life just got a little sadder, deadron, thanks.
  12. Fable 3

Again, I think the world in fable 2 was going in a really cool direction art and concept wise, but yeah I agree with Bowerstone; maybe because of the smaller size it felt like more stuff was going on? Hearing the shops open in the morning, the children playing, and the walking in during a class and disrupting it with my awesomeness was the pinacle of "character" to me. Maybe it was the "darker" or more "real" elements in the new one that crushed the spirit of the first? But then I think of its inspiration; sleepy hollow, Im not sure why they couldn't achieve what they were aiming at and still keeping it goofy fun.
  13. Fable 3

Actually can we talk about this a little, because I haven't been able to pin point this out myself yet. I liked Fable 2, but I'm with irishjohn here in that I couldn't fall in love with it. I've just been refering to Fable 2 losing the charm of Fable 1... but I want to know other peoples thoughts on this so we can narrow it down to what that quality of loss is? I mean, the art and direction of Fable 2 was better, the themes, were better, gameplay, etc... like john mentioned; did removing the tired cliched fable bits lose the charm? They were replaced by others, so I dunno. The world just felt more dull and lovable; I'm having a really hard time grasping why that is... from what I see in F3, it seems to be progressively losing the quality of the first.
  14. Fable 3

I think that's what fable already is, the only problem is it's programed to love you so it's not as entertaining of a premise. We'd need a third party to develop the game to create a realistic slide for comedic effect. But really a game that is fablesq where you actually play PM in the real world trying to convince people of your awesomeness would be pretty outstanding.
  15. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Absolutely agree Xeneth, if I never added this before, you made some excellent points about the art earlier. I mention it only now because going through this thread has lightened me up a bit and Ill eventually take a second stab at the game and probably look at it more favorably, though I don't think my personal taste in the art will change after that. @ Floordje: Tough question, I'm really not super knowledgeable in the indy scene. I can point out adequate things I've seen or the usual impressive flash stuff; but even then I think most of those examples weren't done at Braid team sizes(2 people, am I wrong?) I suppose on that reflection I can at least tip my hat to them for trying something other then retro throw back, flash/cartoon look(vauge and inaccurate, but you know what I mean) or just your adequate kind of art (it's there, usually pretty bland). As Xeneth pointed out, Hellman has a niche/style and that's Braid, like it or don't, I guess.
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

I love Aronofsky, but I dunno I think the wrestler was a little tame/low level on the ideas for him; it really felt like Oscar fodder. Though I still like it and has a lot of great themes and cinematography, it just didn't pop on the idea level that his other movies have. I really loved the visual style, narrative, and score of the Fountain, it made it much less a standard film for me and more of a visual and sonic experience... bad description, but rare all those things come together at the same high level the fountain did. *Hugh Jackman almost showed promise that year with that and the prestige... then he started doing xmen and other shitty things again, sorry dude, but eric bana is now my ausy hopeful. Aftre Black Swan Im really hoping he can go through with Robocop; I know, I know, but if he's going to dumb down a bit he can at least swim in Nolan territory and give us something kick ass from my childhood.
  17. Civilization 5

GDC Talk of the Civ that could have been: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?story=62781 Is it just me or does anyone else want to see that game? Or at the very least a few of those features as options or an expansion to any current civ game?
  18. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

Actually, the biggest advantage he had over Mechner, was Mechner already accomplished what he set out to do, thus giving him a really strong foundation to see what worked and what didn't so he could revise this core idea. I just had to point that out, because having someone else do the leg work for you and then building on it is far easier. (sorry if this sounds negative, it's how we developed as humans) hehehe, yeah thats literally how almost every aspect of the game came off to me. Aside from that screaming in my ear every two seconds there was something else that bothered me; something I dare not speak of because Im probably wrong and it will make people mad. Not there. Whatever narrative they were telling and how it was presented bugged me, just a personal thing.
  19. Fable 3

http://ve3d.ign.com/videos/play/68721/Xbox-360/Fable-III/Gameplay/GDC-2010-Demo-Part-1/Flash-Video On the plus side the first thing he talks about is the shitty interface of Fable 2. Instead they go the other direction that I can see getting just as shitty..... did he just say I can rub gold on my wang? god damn it molyneux... World map: ok cool. I just don't "get" Molyneux" the dude has some neat ideas, he does stuff no one else does, but then falls short going far enough or being really awesome because it seems like he has some of these good core ideas, half implements them and then goes off to put the rubbing gold on your wang feature in and some farting noises. I really liked the half idea they stuck into Fable 2 about sacrfice to be a good hero and selfishness to be a bad hero, but then it was all over ridden by the other ridiculous features that negated it. And again here we have a chance where you get to be king; which is kind of interesting because we have this superman kind of situation where your the hero, your obviously better then any of the drones in the world, so what do you do? Take that shit over and run it at your descretion. It's kind of that old saying of absolute power corrupts absolutely and it'd be nice if they explored those themes. Instead we'll probably get animal sex and fart competitions.
  20. Flotilla

During a particularly boring day at work I just ran into Mr.Horners Corners and screwed up his panda bear shipment....
  21. Fable 3

I think the first bullet point is more about audiance? But maybe a bit about the game, like it can't stagnant, needs to keep things fresh to attract more people. I agree about the features of fable 2, I can't recall specifics, but for a pretty simple game, I remember being frustrated by a lot of the implementation. I can imagine stuff like items, then ownership over things confused people... but this could have been do to the fact that it would punish you for opening up the menu, so most people may have just not wanted to do that so didn't bother trying to find the features. Also, on the art side, I think they were really close to nailing something in fable 2, but Im seeing shots for fable 3 and we're going in a radically different direction with the characters and its heading into that generic poser 3d land rather then what they were doing before, which I thought was getting close to a really solid style.
  22. Fable 3

I've got a baddddd feeling about this. My favorite is "The RPG market is limited by core gamers" I guess? Bioware seems to be doing alright. Like, ok, Fable is a pretty "casual" experience but I've still enjoyed them and I guess the direction will go further into the casual, but what's listed here is just spooky.
  23. Wizard News!! Final Fantasy XIV

I vaugely follow Final Fantasy and I'm getting really confused with the numbers now to the point where i have to wiki it every time someone mentions one or the other. So this is Final Fantasy Online 2, so cool. I'm kind of interested in it, actually. I watched my friend play FF12(whatever that last one was for the ps2 that was singleplayer) and it looked like a FF I'd want to play, my friend also like FF Online 1. My biggest complaint is what's up with the small guys and why the hell aren't they moogles? All I want to do is play a moogle, it doesn't seem like a huge request, but it never happens.
  24. Im right there with you, brother. I did find one hat, my first hat, a scout hat.... I know I said I'd play any class I actually got a hat for, but scout doesn't work in so many situations for me. But yeah, I'd loooovvveee a hat for a class I play a lot, man that would be so damn awesome. I honestly quit Tf2 for a couple months because the hat thing was pissing me off When i got back ther ewas this crafting so I started to do crafting, turns out it lists all my items, duplicates or not and I crafted half my weapons away. So that was fun.
  25. Hye Just wondering what your forum icon is? did you recently change it because for some reason i notice it a lot over the last few days, lol.

Anyway, my guess is mignola or vaugely similar to something ashely wood did, but I could be way off.

It's really cool so I'm just curious if it's someone else.
