http://www.shacknews.com/article/72936/simcitys-glass-box-engine-shown-off Love how they are advertising this as more of a simulator than a game. Mark it, this is now my most anticipated game coming out over the next couple of years.

Is there anyway to change my address for the pledge? I was poking around the site and couldn't find a way.

Yeah I think there will be an over-saturation eventually... so get in while you can! Still a fun time to be around watching this stuff and hopefully some cool stuff will get made.

Sounds a lot of what is slowly happening to the health care in Canada. Which blows. *** Hate to update in this thread anytime I have news about myself, I do lurk to see what every one is up to from time to time. But, I'm no longer in Canada! I just moved to San Francisco and took a job with 2K Marin! Apparently wanting to be a painter and frequenting pubs wasn't a good career choice so after a brief stint working on a uninteresting game in the summer I got the opportunity to get a work visa and get, what might turn out to be my dream job in an awesome city. Also, I can take my passing hobby of online stalking Jake Rodkin into the more professional sense of actually stalking Jake Rodkin.

That's not bad, actually. So how do these things work? Are you allowed to spectate?

I go away for a week and the world turns upside down. Hope GB fairs well in this...

Two different production budgets, schedules and employees(mostly). I'm not sure why a lot of gamers haven't figured out the economics of DLC, but just because it's being made along side the game, it's not funded directly from the main production budget and usually involves several other employees that weren't part of the main production. Since DLC is a thing now, companies can coordinate making extra content along side the actual production so that it gives staying power to your newly released product. Players can choose to buy in or not, but the feeling that it was content that would have been in the released game is just unwarranted; the "extra" content would not exist if they didn't charge for it. Edit: I'd also like to add that the details on this game make me really excited. It's really sounding like all the stuff you imagined a modern Sim City game would do. It's like putting the sim back into Sim City... you can quote me on that.

I always tend to just ignore GDC every year and then listen to the topics they upload on the net afterwards. I just don't look towards GDC for game announcements. I'm more interested in the discussions about design, trends in the industry, and technological innovations; there always at least a few fascinating ones every year. And not to get into some debate about the Japanese game industry, but the guy did have a point, it's just that he was completely out of turn and disrespectful. He might have a more intelligent and articulate conversation at a later date to clarify what he really meant. I also sort of agree that a lot Japanese developers seem to be lost in the modern market... they're trying to appeal to much too both sides of the world and have lost a lot of what made them innovative and original back in the 90s. With that said, I think the western market has some of the same issue and is leading the industry into a bloody disaster in the next few years... but I don't need to get into that doomsday discussion either, because between production methods, publishing, and business structures I'm having a hard time projecting anything but gloom. Anyway, to go way off topic, I'll be at GDC next year as I'm moving to San Francisco on Monday! Just in time to completely miss the conference this year!

Could Ubisoft just drop the Assassins Creed branding, the VR crap, and that goofy white cloak? It looks (and probably will be) great, but, damn, all of the stuff I mentioned is completely unnecessary to sell this game to me, in fact, it's a deterrent.

That would be the reason right there

Really? Because in the movie there was a riot over the draft for the civil war... I cant imagine it's that much later, is it? (I have a rough knowledge of American history and earnestly asking)

Is this really confirmed? I was pretty sure that image is a fake.

I thought the Iphone SimCity was really good and didn't have any noticeable social media stuff in it; so I don't see the worry with that kind of thing because if they were going to do it, that would be the platform to have it on. On the plus side, if Maxis prime isn't doing it, maybe they'll have "Bioware" make it since that seems to be their trend lately : )

Sim City is one of the reasons I even got into the gaming industry; I just loved the first one so much but the sequels never really captured me as heavily. I can't remember which one exactly(either 3 or 4) but it seemed to rely a lot on other cities that didn't exist, much like the Sims where I had to create a bunch of different households for my sims to interact with. I didn't like this as much, I like to have one city and really focus on that. Then there was that other one where it got a little too detailed with power, water, sewage...bleh. As much as I love the original and the idea of bigger, better versions, I honestly can't say what would make a great Sim City sequel. The concept art(paint overs) looks cool and I'm sure the final game will look close to that, it would be interesting to see if it takes on the illustrative style and from the looks of it they sort of have a Sim City Societies thing going with creating the clean metropolis and the dirty wasteland. Always excited to see a new Sim City, even

Yeah I was interested in it until I tried to play it but turned out it just wasn't my thing. I like the idea and I see where it can go, but somehow I was wanting a little more DF out of it than I got. Also, the demo is on Onlive, which is my first experience using that service... for a small indy 2d game it was laggy as hell, so I better wait to give it a second go when I can install it on my system.

Yeah, I've been doing the same and getting interested in a bunch of stuff I never thought I would be. I tend to stay away from obscure, detailed, European conquest games, but after this quick look I'm completely on board, it appears to be a bunch of stuff I really love and I like the fact that they took a hardline on history and realism. edit: Also, multiplayer. Doubt there will be enough thumbs to do this, but who knows, with the podcast about to happen again there might be an influx of people willing to try this crazy thing.

Seems like a legal nightmare and the website is registered through godaddy, which seems really weird for any of those companies to do.

The game design sounds pretty neat, but, boy, do they need an art director to step in and redo everything because there's a mid-90's vibe coming from the design choices... which I guess could be a thing, but I don't think it's an intended result here. Especially looking at similar titles like Trine and Bionic Commando it really needs some help... which hopefully is where some of the money will go and it'll be totally awesome. *Side note: Kickstarter is awesome, the more I see small, interesting projects reach their goals the more I get encouraged to try an indy game.

http://www.giantbomb.com/syndicate/61-30734/reviews/ I guess it's... good...really good? I stopped paying attention to this and am surprised to see it's released already, figured we had another 6 months and there would be some sort of marketing ramp up to remind me this existed. I should probably play it, but after Deus Ex, I'm still not ready to love another game that looks so much like it. I'm even a little worried if I end up liking it a lot more then I did Human Revolution for some reason I couldn't even begin to understand. Also, still hate how the main character looks and his name really puts me off... but everything else sounds like something I'd want to try.

Amazing news, I'm so happy the cast is coming back and it already met it's goals and more! I went ahead and pledged anyway because you guys really deserve it.

Before the E3 trailer hit the game was going one direction, then the managing staff was removed and they went in a slightly different direction. I'm not sure if this was ever reported because it happened before the game was unveiled. The main character was an ex army doctor on vacation that would crack wise ala Nolan North Nathan Drake looking to get back his girlfriend on a crazy chain of Islands ala Lost. Still similar, but you can see a shift in these trailers.
-
Yeah... so I guess after the creative director and a lot of the management got the axe they took a different direction... great.

I understand people are going to buy it, it's pretty clear already because of kickstarter, but I imagine DF would like to see sales outside of people that donated. It's not one of those things that's a huge concern, I just think if you send your game out there to test and people get the option to download it for free, they'll do it, because that's what people have done time and again.
-
"Fans" are also likely to pirate that shit. I think for a singleplayer game classic adventure game, sending it out there may not be a great idea. At that point it'll just be out there for free or people will have seen/experienced a good portion of what you expected them to pay for. Or do I have this all wrong, they have a kickstarter to make the game, but they are still selling it when it's done, correct? Or is it freeware? I didn't read the details:) Also I think public tests are cool for finding a certain set of issues, but not in the way of professional testing that actually needs to be done before you release a solid game. But I do like the idea of crowd sourcing your game in some kind of form, I just don't know if it would work with the type of game they plan on making. But again, if it's freeware, then ya, they should do that.
