Granted developers get shafted, but looking at where they want to put their money, I suspect any publisher saw that as ludicrous. Maybe they are just getting a raw deal, but if they are very concerned about maximizing profits they should have the knowledge to see the unnecessary overhead they are lumping into this project.

Battletoads (Tradewest)? As in the snes Battletoads beatem up? Has that been something that has been ported before or recently? I'm starting to think even the backers are in on a ridiculous prank.

Yeah I played for twenty minutes and had to go refer to google. I found a really awesome tutorial link that I'll post back on Monday when I have access to it. I really want to like this game, it seems cool but, damn, a bit overwhelming at first... Which was expected

A steam box would be something I'd get happy about for sure.

Fascinated to find out what happens at QuakeCon. I dunno, that might be worth a trip now that there is at least one thing to see, but everything else seems strange and confusing.

Well, I'm on the skeptic side of things, so while there is a ton of work that could have gone into this, I see a bad idea and am taking it at face value.. A console design built on off the shelf existing specs and a couple logos and a Ui draft doesn't seem that hard to pull off. A million dollars in terms of making a console is small potatoes, but it isn't "so little money". Case in point I relate it to the last time I watched Shark Tank (And it was the last time for this specific reason) A designer showed up wanting to sell soap. She didn't talk about the soap, quality of soap, or anything unique about the actual product; in fact I;d wager she knows nothing about soap and the product they are selling is some shit manufactured in china. What she did do was make a package design, a skill and task given to every design student. It was reasonably well done with an idea I didn't particularly care for or think was a super unique idea or especially stand out to go flying off the shelves. But it was informed and well constructed as a package. It was a feeding frenzy over this thing, it was mind blowing. Anyway, long story short, a good package design and pitch isn't hard to accomplish and can do wonders to cover up a shitty product or lack of ideas.

He must not have thrown a lot of money at it if they were on kickstarter asking for funds.

Funding for games is a per project thing, it's not like the old days where you get a contract from someone and use that money to fund a separate game. The only modern example I can think of is allocating that money into tech you plan to use elsewhere, but hopefully that's justified to the developer/publisher handing you the funds.

Just watched Streets of Hope... Did hitman get a time machine? I'm confused. They always had an odd lense of America in the other games, but this is a bit out too lunch. I mean I get the architecture is from the 50s, but why are their still greasers and the signage and products on the shelf old timey? Just weird.

Felt the same, not to be rude to indies trying to make it happen. But if I recall, a lot of people liked it and played it... yet it still didn't make enough money to further a sequel? Maybe it didn't do as well as I think it did, thus not warranting a sequel or maybe they mismanage the revenue? Then again, if they get kickstarted the people who want it will make it happen, so good for them. Edit: Whoa, what? Did you look at those tiers for funding? I have absolutely no knowledge of their team size or costs, but $500k and they'll have a new engine? That's a ludicrous overhead given the type of game it is and the fact there are a variety of super cheap platforms to build on for developers. Just on that alone, they either don't know how to spend their money wisely, are inflating the cost to get more money, or don't know how to run a fiscally sound studio.

I was getting that today too, I just left it up for a couple hours and came back to it and the store was up... so yeah.

Dark Messaih was neat for its day, but I stopped because of the cut scenes or a crash, or both, it was aweful.

I didn't end up getting Crusader Kings back when we were talking about so I picked it up today. Still no computer, but we should try to organize a Thumb game within the next month if anyone is interested.

Because it's built on Android, which is seen as a mobile platform, has the specs of a cell phone and is using Tegra 3 which was designed for mobile. I get the fact that once this thing is out there that the reality of it won't be mobile so who knows what will happen, but that's the platform and technology that's been given, so given the information, I suspect a lot of the early games will be mobile ports.

Holy shit, if only it wasn't patented by Nintendo we should have totally got in on that. We could even make a game similar to enviro-bear where you drive a horse.
-
I hope they fund some cool games then with the extra cash, even a million of that could produce a variety of cool products. We have a few programmers here, who wants to team up and pitch them an idea? Wouldn't mind clinging on to their bandwagon to get some of that sweet, sweet cash.

So a friend sends me this link today, which isn't surprising news since they cancelled a project he was working on. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/03/splinter-cell-far-cry-2-designer-clint-hocking-leaves-ubisoft/ Whats even funnier is the source is Idlethumbs(Chris remo twitter) like his twitters is the unofficial fan site for Clint Hocking. I am also disapointed that he had to trump my announcement from leaving Ubisoft, always has to be the center of attention, right Clint?

This is going to get into a weird and sort of insulting discussion, but the penny arcade guys at this point are pretty well know celebrities, like it or not, and I've heard of stories where celebrities getting paid to attend events and private functions. So I don't see this as being completely outrageous.

Maybe I'm a massive nerd, but I don't work at home on my PC, so I have that connected to my tv so I can sit on a couch with my games and cheetos like a real human being.

You also forgot the part where you the Thumbs will take you out for dinner at a certain tier, which doesn't seem that different from having lunch with Koo or even a tweet. I have no stance the PA thing, so I am not making any statement, it's just strange to see.
-
Yeah this is weird, if it was a kickstarter for a specific project of theirs, sure... but this. weird.

Yes I am and I don't see a difference in rolling the dice for Space Diablo and this. But I'll leave it at that.

It's no developmental? In what sense? I get it, they have the specs and a controller that hasn't been actually made yet, but for a unproven or tested concept without a list of signed developers converting or making content for it sounds pretty developmental to me.
