I think what you're saying makes sense in broad strokes, but there are important nuances like - GGers largely and proudly self-identify as GamerGate supporters, so saying that someone is a "GamerGater" seems about as inherently inflammatory as saying someone is a "Republican" More than ever before, words have a greater currency than their meaning because their value is quantified by systems like hashtags. Lots of the reticence to directly reference the term "GamerGate" is because it's so easy to search for it or follow the hashtag. We already know that #GG is used by a relatively small number of people (~10,000) yet the use of the tag has been used so much more that the number of uses of it has become the metric by which the general public considers it to be a BFD. Of course, neither of these things makes what you're saying any less true but the context matters.

The cheapest it's ever been was $7.50, but it was only that cheap once and I think it was a price mistake. Still, it may go back to $7.50 for Black Friday/Winter Sale so if you really feel $10 is too much and you don't mind waiting a month and a half+, by all means wait.
  3. Idle Food - Cooking!

In the vein of what dibs does, this is my usual application for bok choy - http://www.budgetbytes.com/2010/04/basic-bok-choy/ Really simple, nice with some scrambled eggs over rice or something like that.

Any level 28s+ want to do a level 28 weekly strike tonight for coins?
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

I feel like umbrellas exist to save your head and whatever you might be carrying. I used to hold my umbrella toward the center of my body, now I just tend to hold it centered over my backpack or messenger bag if I happen to be carrying one.
  6. Other podcasts

    Serial is great.

I think that in the same way that "don't publicize threats" is considered a truism in some circles, this may also be somewhat of a truism. That said, I don't think it's a logical stretch to think that if people make it known that they report such threats, more people would be willing to report instead of stay silent. To me, a clear analogue in my mind is the gap between numbers of women who report in polls that they've been a victim of sexual assault versus the numbers of women who report sexual assault to authorities. I don't have the numbers on hand, but it's a big gap. I can't help but think the same must be true of threats of physical violence.
  8. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think publicizing it is something you should or shouldn't do, necessarily. It's a personal decision. That said, I'd imagine following the advice of the aforementioned law enforcement/FBI on such matters if offered is also a good idea, but as far as I know the FBI hasn't said made any statements about not publicizing threats.
  9. Movie/TV recommendations

After Man of Steel, I basically could not give fewer shits about these movies. Ben Affleck and a Wonder Woman movie are the only things that seem like they could do any kind of uplifting of that movie universe for me.
  10. Feminism

"The other side" has no shortage of fuel. They are seemingly enraged by literally anything progressive that a female in the gaming industry does. Tone policing Anita Sarkeesian because she retweeted a tweet that doesn't even directly reference GGers is fucking ludicrous. Anita doesn't need to adopt the same cognitive dissonance GGers exhibit when they simultaneously make every attempt to distance themselves from people making death threats yet feel offended when people publicly say that the people making the death threats are shitholes.
  11. Feminism

Did she purport to be solving something by retweeting that? Also, what qualifies you to be an arbiter of what is appropriate for her to retweet?
  12. Feminism

And you're doing a really good job of solving the issue with responses like "weak excuse".

Good deal on a budget processor, the Pentium G3258 - http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G3258-BX80646G3258/dp/B00KPRWAZQ/ It OCs like a champ and is a very capable placeholder if you anticipate getting into PC gaming deep with a Core i7 down the road.
  14. Life

For what it's worth, my sister in law taught as an adjunct professor and had an equally anger-inducing experience. I remember reading two good articles at The Atlantic about it in the past year or so - http://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2013/12/the-worst-time-of-the-year-to-be-an-adjunct-professor/282314/ http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/04/the-adjunct-professor-crisis/361336/
  15. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Report it to local law enforcement, particularly if you're a big public figure where the threat could be perceived as credible simply because of your notoriety. Also report it to the FBI - http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx
  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I only took a cursory skim of that article but it's definitely really lame. I actually think it's weirdly part of the Ferguson-esque issue of police militarization - so strange to see a PD suggest that potential victims be "hard targets". Their advice is basically the same that you might read in a military thriller where the main character is practicing counter-surveillance techniques. I actually think it's broadly good advice just posed in the worst possible way. I think it's generally a good idea for people to outwardly show situational awareness when for instance walking around in the dark, not because "don't look like a victim or else you'll become one" but because keeping your eyes down with earbuds in your ears literally does make you look like a good target for crime. That doesn't just apply to women, it applies to anybody. I also don't think it applies to preventing ANY kind of crime. That kind of "head on a swivel" counter-surveillance stuff might keep away a petty thief who just wants to pickpocket you, but it's sure are shit not going to stop someone who is determined to do something.
  17. eReaders - What is everyone's thoughts?

The benefits of the Amazon DRM seem to outweigh the deficits, what with their syncing stuff and multiplatform cloud download stuff. I use Calibre to handle all non-Kindle books, which is really handy for converting ePub/PDF files I buy elsewhere, stripping Kindle DRM if need be, and syncing files easily to a plugged in Kindle/automating email to @kindle.com. I love my Paperwhite. My wife has the last gen normal Kindle with an unlit screen, and I actually like it too because it's smaller and has physical page turn buttons. The Paperwhite is touch-only, which is not super great for one-handed reading in bed or something. That said, it's not a huge problem and I still prefer my Paperwhite over last-gen non-touch non-lit Kindles I've owned. I'm honestly considering upgrading to a Kindle Voyage + 3G next time around, as it has page-turning sensors in the bezel, a really high DPI matte display, and the Whispersync would be superhot coupled with 3G connectivity. But I'm also a big dumb idiot who would pay $250-ish for a super fancy eReader, so don't pay attention to me.
  18. It's a downloader + launcher + social platform (achievements + chat, looks like). I guess that's harmless enough, though they already had a downloader + update tool thing.

fwiw, thefncrow beat both of you two the Deadspin article two pages ago (though not specifically in reference to prettyunsmart's question).
  20. Man, I think GOG deserves it but man do I really not feel like I need another game client. GOG has benefits that makes me buy games from their store despite being invested in Steam, but I'm not jazzed about the idea of a platform. That said, I have both Origin and UPlay installed on my PC so I guess my money isn't necessarily where my mouth is.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Welp, Wikileaks/Julian Assange sure are some classy fucks - I wonder if they have any idea how backing such an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory hitsquad undermines their message. I honestly believed in the general idea of Wikileaks, but fuck if this doesn't throw that into question.
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I said public jartime. I referenced it because its Jeff's soapbox of sorts, and it would have been a big gesture if he released one publicly where he talks about it directly to users. Talking about it on the Bombcast also would have been fine, sure, but I'm talking about something more straightforward. Honestly, if they talk about it on the Bombcast at this point I'll just be disappointed.

The PC version of TR is excellent, though I played it with a controller so I can't speak for MK controls. I honestly still feel that the PC version trumps the Definitive Edition even with my relatively aged PC (i5 Ivy Bridge, 7870 2gb).
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Jeff could have just as easily put out a public jartime episode where he speaks his editorial into a webcam. So no, I don't think it's fair to say that Patrick is the only person on the site seemingly capable of producing editorial content.
  25. He's holding a cold gun. Primary purpose is to shoot a cold beam that freezes stuff on contact. There are a lot of weird and contrived other uses for it in the comics at various points. The idea is that it can slow Flash down because cold is slow and stuff.
