  1. Twin Peaks Rewatch 14: Demons

My experience was: "Oh hey, that's the same guy who was in that talk show episode of Louie. I wonder what his name is..." *Goes to IMDB* "OH!"
  2. 50 Short Games by thecatamites (Game Club)

I took screenshots of all the scenes from the part of the game that goes by quickly:
  3. Dreams!

I had a very vivid and bizarre dream last night. It was rife with undecipherable meaning in the way that the best dreams are:
  4. Life

You're literally living my dream right now. congrats, man!
  5. And the Award for Best Game Trailer of All Time Goes to...

That was really fantastic, and incredibly true to 90s video game commercials in visual style. Also, I thought the IGN watermark was hilarious satire for the first few seconds.
  6. Is It Wrong To Eat Meat?

Being a vegan is actually very cheap if you rely on fresh, in-season produce and use beans/tofu/tempeh for protein rather than processed fake meat products. Vegetables are generally less expensive than meat.
  7. Playables of 2014

I had a lot of fun playing around with this game and figuring out how to win. It was fun to go from being pretty much helpless to annihilating the ufos as soon as they spawned. I had a problem where I would permanently lose the ability to click, but I'm not sure if that was a bug on your end or on mine. Cactus Farming Simulator was the most intriguing game for me, and I had some fun growing absurdly huge cacti. I love seeing insane fractal versions of realistic looking objects. My laptop started to chug really badly even with just one cactus on the screen, though, so I don't think I was able to get the most out of it.
  8. Playables of 2014

Nice, I had a feeling you'd like it. Maybe you'll create a physics driven romance simulator about the love affairs of cellular automata and particle systems
  9. Pretend I don't know the first thing about making games

If you want to get a handle on programming in general I can't recommend enough that you check out Processing and the tutorials on their website. Processing is a language that's very similar to C# and it's designed to be powerful but easy to grasp for beginners. There are some great tutorials for people who have never programmed on its website. If you want to get a more detailed introduction, check out the book Learning Processing by Daniel Shiffman.
  10. That's a good point. I was thinking about games that do seek to represent reality and which feature human social interaction. I should have specified that.
  11. I don't know if having a cavalier attitude like this is the best thing. I think that if you're writing characters which represent a minority group which is 'other' to you, then you have an obligation to put in the time to research and understand that group. This way you can be sure that you're allowing the characters to be real people and not using the stereotypes associated with their particular group as a plot device. If you do, then you're creating a vision of reality where race has no bearing on human interaction. Denying that there are problems can be just as offensive as being part of the problem.

Clyde, it was cool to follow the progression of your music-games from the dancing one up to Musical Stacks. Are you familiar with Toshio Iwai? He's the guy who made Electroplankton, but he's also been creating interactive/generative music things since the 80s and as far as I can tell he pioneered a lot of that stuff. (And he also created this featuring digital puppets controlled by voice actors with NES controllers. Not related to anything, but I love it)
  13. Playables of 2014

Here are a few things I made: Journey of Fate Pixel Colony The Assassination thanksgivingame?! Attack of Bogon Fox Dance Feels kind of underwhelming to see them all lined up like this. I guess most of my work was done on little prototypes and unfinished ideas. Creating more finished stuff will have to be a goal for next year, I suppose.
  14. Playables of 2014

I just wanted to pop in and say: this is a great idea for a thread and I intend to participate after christmas when i have tangible free time again! (working retail during the holidays is a nightmare: confirmed)
  15. Twin Peaks Rewatch 10: Coma

Man, I loved the guitar scene. The absurdity of James' falsetto and the double-tracked vocals were very funny to me but it makes so much sense that he would sing that way. It kind of reminds me of that James and Donna scene in the first episode where they're just spouting romantic sounding nonsense at each other. It's exactly the awkward kind of music that teenagers would make, and they're still trying to model their lives after a soap opera.
  16. Life

So I went to therapy for depression for the first time today, and I was surprised that the therapist told me I might want to avoid opening up to people about it because it might hurt me more if they don't understand. And also that I might want to avoid taking medication because if it turns out it doesn't work then I might lose the hope of getting better and get more depressed. It's definitely not what I was expecting. Does this make sense to anyone else who's gotten treatment for depression?

Cool article. I think if you make a hyper-objective comparison between the procedurally generated art in this game and intentionally made human art then there is really no difference between the two. The difference is more perceptual; human art is presumed to somehow be an expression of our greater culture, and our existence as humans. When there is no human behind a work of art, then we're unable to find that narrative hook and we have to create our own. So I think it's totally normal to imagine an artist behind the pieces in the game. I think the game lets you learn about yourself by giving you all these randomly generated signifiers to string together and create meaning from. When I played the game though, I felt very aware that this was a land totally dedicated to art, but with no need for actual artists, and no real need for an audience. It felt sort of dystopian world to me, like a society that had realized the dark side of 'art for art's sake'. But at the same time there was a lot of beauty to be found in the galleries and in the world around them. It left me with a bittersweet feeling.
  18. Regarding the giant, I always felt like the supernatural characters in Twin Peaks aren't really meant to be operating with clear motives, or at least not ones that make sense to us. Sometimes it seems like they're helping Cooper, and other times they seem to be playing with him or hindering the investigation. To me, the fact that their actions seem unfathomable makes them more interesting and scary.
  19. Plug your shit

I think it looks really nice, actually. It's a unique style of drawing, and you've chosen some nice colors. You also let the colors be descriptive rather than filling the image in with unnecessary detail. The only parts that seem off to me are the slightly darker orange areas around the guy's torso, because they seem to flatten him out rather than add a sense of depth.

I came here to post that. Seriously one of the coolest games I've played in a while.
  21. Plug your shit

    Dang, that looks great!
  22. Life

It's the worst, isn't it? But if you resist the temptation to isolate yourself to escape that pain it will eventually get easier to live. I've only just started to understand myself that most people either really do not care enough to judge or are maybe even willing to sympathize if you open up to them.

For me, the transformations felt like when you're just absentmindedly hanging out with your dog on an overcast fall day, which is the type of weather that makes me get lost in thought. And you just sort of start spacing out and getting caught up in different stories in your head. Meanwhile your dog clearly doesn't give a shit and just wants you to keep throwing the ball.
  24. Post Your Game for Playtesting and Feedback!

I played the space ship game, and actually had a lot of fun just flying through the endless canyons and bumping off of things. It reminded me of space ship sequences in old Star Wars games. As a side bonus, your game makes some crazy fractal psychedelic patterns when you move the mouse outside of the Unity window and cause the space ship to spin at insane speeds: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kyuxf8hf24h7efx/Screen%20Shot%202014-11-22%20at%2010.12.45%20AM.png?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/bj9iz0c3f8pybx6/Screen%20Shot%202014-11-22%20at%2010.13.08%20AM.png?dl=0 They're extra-trippy in motion.
