  4. Movie/TV recommendations

2 recommendations: -Exam (2009), it's a British psychological thriller where 8 candidates are confined in a room and have to answer a question to get a much coveted job. Pretty interesting, nothing revolutionary but still worth watching IMHO. -Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal / Samurai X Remembrance (different names, same thing), it's a 4-episode OAV of the very famous series, it tells the origin story of the main character. It's a very adult and emotional story, opposite to the main series. I watched it back when I was an anime buff, in another lifetime. Recently someone was asking me for a recommendation, so I watched it again because I remembered it to be one of the best and it certainly is. Highly recommended, but bear in mind it's an anime.
  5. Sony Europe is kicking America's ass when it comes to product promotion, at least when it comes to the PSP Go and PSN Plus... the problem is what they have to promote, both are a really tough sell.
  6. Eurogamer Tim Schafer interview

The context tells me he's calling Kotick out for being a total prick in his due diligence to the shareholders. So yeah, the 1UP title seems about right.
  7. Borderlands

I just finished the Zombie Island DLC, I was level 17 when I got there and there were some fixed level drops that were level 35ish, so I suppose this was the intended level, but these were the only things that didn't scale (like 4 weapons and the character mod vending machine). I found the game design in this DLC to be very poor regarding the zombie brains. You start the DLC getting brains when headshotting zombies, but the player has NO clue what to do with them. Of course, anyone would assume it will be part of some kind of item/money exchange some point later. However, the quest giver (Zombie TK) is in a location that is extremely easy to overlook because it isn't in the path to any other quests in the area. The closest you would get is the pumpkin sidequest, but even that one is located closer to the entrance to the area. I finished the entire DLC and I still didn't know what to do with the hundreds and hundreds of brains I collected because I never ran into TK. I had to check online what to do with them and then saw where the quest giver was. I walked all the way there expecting to be able to finish all the quests in one fell swoop. But no, the game only counts the brains you collect after accepting the quest, so the hundreds of brains I got earlier served NO PURPOSE AT ALL. To make things worse, when I finally decided to teleport back to Fyrestone, the backtracking door that connects the DLC hub city back to the teleporter DID NOT open even though I had the prompt to open it. I had to walk the long way back to the teleporter. This clearly shows the lack of playtesting if this hasn't been corrected until now. I recently purchased the game and all DLC packs from Steam because I heard good things about this game, but if this kind of shenanigans happens again I'll probably stop playing. In summary: 1. Don't let the zombies drop brains before the quest is accepted, it doesn't make sense. If anything, in the same DLC you have the quest to collect the crow eggs and they only drop while the quest is active. 2. If you still want to drop brains as a gag, MAKE THEM COUNT WHEN THE TIME COMES. 3. Place the quest giver in a spot where the player is forced to go through, either in transition to a main quest line point of interest or close to the hub town. 4. If you're placing a door for easier backtracking (which is very very common in this game), make sure the damn door unlocks from the inside.
  8. Dragon Age II

The only problem with the combat in DA:O was that it required you to either exploit the shit out of it or have a really hard time. Anyone familiar with Baldur's Gate will always abuse of AoE spells. Still, I enjoyed every bit of Cone of Cold in that game
  9. Borderlands

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have a question for someone who had all the DLC for the game: at which level should I go to the new added areas? Does it matter or is it completely scalable?

I'm a little bit LTTP, but I recently beat Bioshock 2 on the PC. There are definitely some technical issues regarding mouse sensitivity, I was waiting for them to patch it but it never came so I finished the game anyway. I thought it was entertaining, but not a watershed moment like the first game. While the level design was fine, I thought the enemies became dull after you had enough tonics and research to kill everything with a couple of well-placed shots. More aggravating was the structure of the Adam collection, it was the same thing over and over. I had a sigh of relief when I got the achievement saying that I harvested all the bodies in the game. Some spolerific remarks:

I heard you can leave a bottle of wine and get vinegar 10 years later
  12. Dragon Age II

Well, it isn't Dragon Age: Origins 2. I'm fine with not having the different origin stories, that was the purpose in the first game, to introduce the players to the backstory of each race/background of the universe they created. Just imagine the time they spent creating the different origin stories, I certainly didn't play through more than the one I began with, I can't imagine more than 10% of people who played did that. While it still made sense in the first game for anyone avid to know more, it makes far more sense to expand the main story line. Also, the amount of variables in the main quest depending on your origin must've also been quite daunting, I don't blame them for restricting it this time around. Let's not hate until we know more and play some of it...
  13. Dragon Age II

1 and a half years after the first one, with a decent web browser game, a substantial expansion in between. I think they're hitting the sweet spot there, especially when you think how long the first game was developed for (it was announced at E3 2004), they definitely had all the lore and tech nailed for the second game well in advance.
  14. Dragon Age II

It's the cover of the last Gameinformer, apparently it has some plot points and concept art... but my subscription is long gone, I no longer buy at Gamestop.
  15. Engineer Update

The dog one was made by another guy, who was also Brazilian. It also got much much much more attention than the one my friend made, unfortunately... probably because people were fed up with "fake updates".
  16. Movie/TV recommendations

Here's the thing: I don't particularly like supercars or even driving. Somehow, I started watching Top Gear and it is probably the best show in TV. Excellent writing, the perfect presenter trio, amazing features, interviews with interesting celebrities... and the challenges they have to go through can be completely life-threatening crazy.
  17. Engineer Update

By the way, here's the fake engie update my friend did a while ago... I helped him out with some of the translations, but everything else goes to him: http://teamfortress.com.br/engineerupdate/day01.html Click the arrows to change days, it goes up to 5.
  18. Summer Steam Sale

This thread demands another thread about Uplink/Onlink.
  19. Recently completed video games

It has both classic and new rules... the new ones make games much shorter, you don't have to clean the map, just reach 3 objectives and you're done. I'm not sure about local, but it probably does have it. I only played the campaign, it took me about 30 mins/match.
  20. Playstation Plus

That is if he's in Europe... in the US, they're "lending" Wipeout HD.
  21. Recently completed video games

Finished 2 short games in the weekend, the campaign in Risk Factions and the story mode in Shatter. I was pleasantly surprised with Risk Factions. Great UI, the game looks good, funny "characters", cutscenes and the spirit of Risk is intact. The only problem was the AI, which wasn't very challenging... but maybe I'm above average since I've played countless hours of Risk and ConquerClub (webgame). Now I should try playing the multiplayer portion, when I get some time.
  22. Summer Steam Sale

I got: Borderlands + DLC Introversion Pack (although I already had Darwinia and Multiwinia, I wanted Uplink and it is AMAAAAAAZING) Flatout Ultimate Carnage Shatter (excellent game!) Flotilla Zeno Clash Cryostasis So, on the matter of Uplink, I bought it and played for several hours until I got busted for not deleting logs in the computers I hacked. Then someone from the forum told me on Steam chat that there's a free "mod" of the game, which doesn't require the full version and is way more feature-rich. I ended up "wasting" 5 bucks and buying 2 of their games again, but they really deserve it, very gripping game.
  23. Engineer Update

All I care is how this update will DESTROY the public games I play... which is most of the time 32-player in Warpath. And maybe I'll finally play engineer, I think I have less than 5 mins played (of 400h total).
  24. Summer Steam Sale

I got Killing Floor as well... hit me up on steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/decapentaplegic
  25. A Life Well Wasted: Big Ideas

About the funding, in the US it's way easier to get funding for projects that can be readily translated to disease treatment, such as cancer. But one thing about cancer is that it involves most of the basic cell machinery going awry, so you can justify your basic research linking it to some aspect of cancer formation for example. In the end, it's all about how you're selling your work. And there probably isn't a "cure for all cancers", due to the very different nature of mutations from patient to patient. However, what has been discovered in the last decade is very promising, I bet that more and more patients will be cured or live much longer than they do now.
