I'm not a big scifi reader, but my friend suggested me to pick up Ender's Game. And so I did, since I had a long flight and needed something to read. This book is amazing. It's incredible that it was written 20-some years ago and still holds up well. Also, it hits our demographic square in the jaw. If you're a gamer (I know you are) and mildly interested in scifi literature, you should give it a shot, if you haven't already. I know I'm totally late to the party, but I wanted to share

So I had a bunch of interviews in management consulting firms, as the only PhD candidate amongst MBAs... and it went much much better than I had ever anticipated. I got 2 job offers, one final round in Paris that I won't attend to and I just got eliminated from one firm in the middle of the process. It's good to know that there's life after a PhD in basic science besides research, and making pretty good money on top of it.

YES, I got an offer! I feel like a ton has been lifted from my shoulders... now I can relax a little bit and say adios to the hellish life of research.

Jesus Christ, I can't wait for tomorrow, the first answer should come... i'm interviewing in the top 4 management consulting firms, it will be pretty sad if I can't land at least one offer.

I'm waiting for job offers or rejections, it's gonna eat me alive this weekend...

digsby here as well, for a while now. I just HATE when it alt-tabs me back to windows when I'm gaming.

I had my first job interview ever yesterday... I'm happy with the fact that I didn't puke or sweat like a pig. I was energetic throughout and my French wasn't as rusty as I thought. If they call me for the second round, I get a free trip to Paris!

man, I was reading stuff on Herobrine... although I know it's a hoax, I'm scared shitless to play singleplayer now.

Do you guys know how to make a source of lava in SMP? I want to make a moat of lava...

On the theme of "Remo Watch", he appeared this week on Three Moves Ahead, in an excellent chat about deception in games. Anyone who played Neptune's Pride should obviously listen.

10 minutes later someone set it on fire... I put dirt blocks on top and I planted like 30 trees around the top. I waited a couple of hours and voila.
-
Jesus F Christ I started playing it yesterday, this is CRACK. MINECRACK. In a server with some friends, I made this: Still a lot of work, I made it in a couple of hours today...

Hooooly shit... I actually liked Icewind Dale more than BG1 at the time. I might have to buy this when I get some free time.

Well, the GDR is in the Civilopedia and unit list... so I guess it's another unit. I'll check if they know anything in the civfanatics forums.

I will remix everything. EVERYTHING!!!

Awesome and awkward. Or the other way around. -
I played BG&E on my PC, I think the resolution was pretty good... I don't see why I'd buy this again.

I just bought a Sony Vaio Z and I have to say it's the pinnacle of modern engineering. I don't know how but they managed to put incredible components in 3lbs with excellent battery life. It has switchable nVidia GT330m, which is more than enough to run Civ5 at 1600x900 for example. It also has TWO SSDs in RAID 0, which makes everything you run ridiculously snappy. The screen is fucking gorgeous, processor is an i5, battery life is about 5h on the Intel graphics... They're phasing out the Z12 for the new Z13 and the refresh isn't really noticeable, so I'd suggest you to hunt right now for a deal on the Z12. I paid US$1450 shipped with taxes.

If you haven't updated your video card drivers, I'd highly suggest you to do so, nVidia particularly are notorious for Civ5 bugs with older drivers.

In fact, military is much more approachable than I had thought, even in games with 8 players. The key is to take out whoever is next to you when you get musket men (you should be the 1st to get it). Wait for other AI to take over the players next to him, then by the time you get mechanized infantry, take his capital. The condition for military victory is: be the only player to keep his own capital. So even if the AI captured 6 other capitals, you just need to take his to finish the game. And damn the Japanese are tough, their civ trait is ridiculously powerful...

I wonder how these games hold up... it's hard to go back while you have a lot of new shit to play in your plate constantly.
-
Fuck this game, I'm done. Since it's been out, I've finished 6 games and I haven't been able to sleep before 4am...

I finished 2 cultural victory games, one being on prince with India. Stick to 3-4 cities, social policy costs increase with the number of cities. Invest heavily on cultural buildings, cultural city states, have a high happiness rate and get the social policy that spills the extra happiness on culture, make monuments with great artists to get the +5 culture tiles, get the +2 free policies policy and the +1 free policy wonder... cultural win is the easiest one by far IMO. Following that, I'd say diplomatic is the second easiest, but it definitely involves a mix of science to get globalization, gold to constantly be allies with as many city-states and some military to liberate some cities once in a while. Other civs will always vote for themselves, I don't know if it's true when you liberate conquered capitals though. I still didn't get a military victory because I'm always playing on normal size 8 civs and it's a bitch to find all capitals. And I didn't get a scientific victory because that's boring to me and it was always the way I won on previous Civ games.

This game is pure crack... I might have to uninstall it to have my life back.
