I sympathise with this perspective and would love to see more thought out science fiction - but that's like saying Cowboys and Aliens is a bad film due to a stupid portrayal of aliens is like saying Back to the Future is a bad film because it has a stupid portrayal of time travel.

There is an arc for each series, but they're all really shit. You're much better off watching the best standalone episodes. My list would be as follows: Series 1: The Empty Child The Doctor Dances Series 2: The Girl in the Fireplace Series 3: Human Nature The Family of Blood Blink Series 4: Midnight Silence in the Library Forest of the Dead Series 5: Amy's Choice Series 6: Day of the Moon The Impossible Astronaut The Doctor's Wife The Rebel Flesh The Almost People

It's interesting that you say that. My feeling is that since Moffat took over he's taken a lot of inspiration from Buffy in the kind of show he's aiming for. I haven't actually watched Buffy in a number of years (Since I was at school I think ) but I know I loved it at the time. I'll have to give it a whirl again and compare it to how I remember it. If you have so much as a passing interest in Dr Who you must watch this episode - I rewatched it only a couple of days ago and it is sooo good

Wait, Jane Espenson writes for Torchwood? As in from Buffy and Battlestar Galactica etc? Blimey! Does this mean my dream of a Dr Who episode penned by Joss Whedon can be downgraded from totally ridiculous to merely highly unlikely?

Watched 2 films recently: Cowboys & Aliens: - Brilliant opening but the second half dragged a bit. What I initially thought was a bold move for the film turned out to be composed entirely of naff . There were plenty of other to moments but overall I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to watching it again when it comes out on DVD. Submarine:  It's a beautiful film. I haven't got anything else to add to that statement Also, the latest Dr Who was fucking abysmal.

Season 2 was very good but I was disappointed it never quite pulled me in as much as season 1 did. Season 3 is the absoulte high point though. I'm actually jealous of people who haven't seen it because I'll never be able to experience watching it for the first time again.
  7. Prince of Persia 3: The Clunky Ass

Actually the film isn't too bad for what it is. It's a fairly average slice of dumb Summer blockbuster. Mostly with a sprinkling of (The basically being whenever Alfred Molina is onscreen)
  8. Hard Reset

That UI looks awful to me. It's a pointless barrier between me and the game. When someone launches a game they want to play that game. Putting in animations slows down moving from one menu screen to the next and as a result slows me down in getting to play game. I find this stuff frustrating as hell. It's like when I'm watching a DVD with animated menus - I put the bloody thing on to watch the show/movie STOP STOPPING ME FROM DOING THAT!
  9. Life

Isn't bread. It's a ceiling tile that we use to keep the heater off the floor (Not that that's significantly better). Well 99% of what happened was cut and what they did show was edited together from all over the shop. The filming was odd. You'd think a documentary exists to document what happens but there is a director who orchestrates everything. They already know what they want and basically cajole you into doing/saying whatever they want you to do. I was essentially an untrained actor in a light TV drama. We'll see what happens next - I'm not sure they even know what they want to do with me.
  10. Life

Oh Christ, now I feel awful
  11. Obligatory comical YouTube thread

Not any more, I'm working on something new and even more awesome.

EDIT: Pffft - embedding disabled That guy's beard is amazing right? What a guy!
  13. Life

I've been lurking for probably over a year now, but after various changes in my life (including, but not limited to this - no prizes for guessing which one's me) I'm hoping I'll have more time to hang out around these parts again. My thumbs are back in town!
  14. Life

I decided a week or two ago that my grubby old laptop had to be replaced as it had a raft of technical issues. I ordered a new one from Dell. What the fuck happened to my F Keys? Instead of the F Keys having additional functions that you toggle by holding down the Fn key, the additional functions are now the PRIMARY FUCKING FUNCTIONS FOR THE KEYS! If I want to use a F key I have to toggle that on by using Fn button. Want to rename that file? I'm sorry you just turned off your wireless connection. (As if to prove a point, I actually managed to do this one whist typing the previous sentence) Were you trying to refresh your inbox? Oh deary me, you just hit mute. Would you like some help? Have a pointless fucking dialog for selecting what monitor setup you have. Is there any way around this "feature"?
  15. La Celle Splintereux: Conviçion

So I'm a year late to this particular party but hopefully there's still a handful of crisps and tiny sausages on sticks knocking around. Having never played any of the previous Splinter Cell games, and no expectations as a result, I'm finding it enormous fun. Basically the game lets me play in the exact same way that I did as a child: Crawl behind the sofa and peak out but only for a split second. There's three guys blocking my way. Lean out and in the blink of an eye: pew pew. OK that's two down, now for the third. I'll have to sneak around the back of the television and get him from behind ... So yeah, it's awesome
  16. Life

Due to a lack of people I can talk about this to in real life, I'm posting it here. I split up with my girlfriend on the 15th Feb. Astute thumbs will have already spotted that this may not have been the best timing. She moved out of the flat on the same day, whilst I was at work, and moved back in with her parents. We've hung out together a few times since then and she's made it clear she wants to get back together. I really don't. Anyway, two nights ago I get a phone call at nearly 3AM from her she's asking for my help. I care about her immensely and she was clearly very upset so obviously I agreed to help her. Then she expains what she wants help with. She wants me to help her take her own life. What the fucking fucking fuck do I do? I literally have no idea how to approach this. I'm mostly just pretending that this isn't happening. Is she serious or trying to guilt trip me or what the fuck? What the fucking fucking fucking fuck am I supposed to do? How can I discuss this with her without inflaming the situation? Do I tell her parents? Both she and her mother have attempted suicide before. I feel like she's using this as a weapon against me but then I feel like an utter cunt. I don't even know what I'm writing anymore, it's turned into a stream of consciousness type thing and my stream is all over the fucking place, so I'm going to stop here. Hopfully I'll feel better for having puked this over other people.
  17. Life

Oh boy, I've missed the internet and that includes all the regular Thumbs (Except Toblix. Obviously*). Hopefully I haven't been forgotten in my absence. I've moved into a new flat just outside London with a work colleague and my girlfriend. My girlfriend is also a colleague as it happens. Actually she's my boss which is kind of awkward at times. And she's about 20 years older than me. It's been an odd couple of months. Oh, I also read The Laughing Policeman. It's fucking brilliant. So, how's everyone doing? Any new peoples kicking around that I should say hi to? *Actually, I love Toblix the best.
  18. These weapons are better than nature!

They're a bunch of dorks doing something they're passionate about. It's hard not to love them for that
  19. Idle Thumbs London meet?

I'd be up for a pint or two, but mostly I want to say make sure you see Four Lions whilst you're over here. Goodness knows when, or if, it'll make it across the pond.
  20. Life

I think I'm mostly OK now, thanks. I'm kind of a living legend at work now too, which is nice
  21. Life

So this happened. We'd closed the shop and I was in the back office - everyone else was on the shop floor. I didn't have the safe key on me. They didn't believe me. Nobody could hear us. It was intense. It was also supposed to be my god damn day off.
  22. Any German kindly speakers in the house?

Hey gang, a while back I used to work in Germany and got a sort of reference thingy from the company I worked at. I say reference thingy because, honestly, I've got very little idea what it says (even at the peak of my German speaking I could only just about order food off a menu - and it has declined significantly since then). Anyway, I was rather hoping someone might be able to do me the (colossal) favour of translating it into something I can understand so I can present potential employers with some record of my time over there. If nobody can be arsed that's cool, but I figured I'd ask on the off chance. Thanks to anyone that takes a look
  23. Any German kindly speakers in the house?

Actually, apart from the MS Access and contortionist bits, that is a fairly accurate description of what I did Thanks for taking a look guys
  24. Gabe Confirms Episode 3 Cancelled

Aww man, I really enjoyed the first two.
