And, not to forget, Duke Nukem Forever
  2. The big names in gaming

There's also an attention whore factory. Let's take 3 major game engine developers: * John Carmack * Gabe Newell * Tim Sweeney Gabe is clearly the largest attention whore between those three. But of the three I think he's the least influential.
  3. Knighthoods for three game designers

Doesn't look like it: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/alone-in-the-dark/screenshots/gameShotId,14861/ Ancel on the other hand looks like he just escaped from a mental institution. And the frensh minister looks like he forgot to go to the toilet.
  4. Flow in Games

Let's see... iD in the early years was John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall. Well ofcourse, everybody plays an important role in the development of a game. But Carmack pretty much always played the role of die hard programmer. If your engine is commercially interesting (e.g. other companies are interested in licensing your engine), and pushing the boundaries of the current limitations. Duke3D was quite modable, and it was released a short while before Quake1. In fact ROTT could also be modded, altough quite limited. Anyway... this discussion can go on forever. The fact is that I don't see john Carmack as a game designer but as a very skilled game\3d engine developer.
  10. Rumble Box

Ugh.. the difficulty curve of this game is way to steep. PS, somewhere in the near future a public demo of Spheroid will come out: http://www.op-games.com/games.html That game is great fun, it's sort of a "clone" of Puzzle Bobble but much more fun.

The real bargin bins suck bigtime. It's impossible to find anything in them, so why even bother. Stuff gets put in the bargain bin because they are not sold in the first place, but the bin isn't browse friendly.
  12. Game designer publicity photos

And again John Romero takes on the challenge
  13. The big names in gaming

Carmack didn't design Q3, besides, there's also Unreal Tournament that was released at about the same time. It's not like he's the only one. There's also Tim Sweeney, and ... well all lead engine programmers. Yes as programmer, but isn't this thread mainly about game developers?
  14. I was searching for fotos of Tom Hall when I noticed something: 1994: http://rott.classicgaming.gamespy.com/gallery/FARMRTOM.GIF 1995: http://rott.classicgaming.gamespy.com/gallery/SCARYTOM.GIF 1998: http://www.smugmug.com/community/rome.ro/keyword/party 2000: http://wolf.nofrag.com/images/tomhall-overgame-02.jpg 2003: http://www.tomtomtom.com/asmalltom.jpg

  18. The big names in gaming

Well... he's working on a game again, an MMOG at KingsIsle Ent. : http://www.kingsisle.com/index.html (hmm, they have a new website and they finally list names, liked the previous design more.). After the monkeystone adventure he wasn't really creating games anymore, "reative Director over Third Party Products". And according to this article in the escapist he's working on a Anachronox-like MMOG.
  19. Hot titles you're waiting for

It was called Porntris and was released quite some time ago.
  20. The big names in gaming

Frederick Raynal Tom Hall Both are on their return. As for John Carmack, he might be a great programmer, but never really designed a game. John Romero... well... It was still mostly Tom Hall that made the games a success Romero worked on. Romero's own brain childs (Daikatana) wasn't that great, it wasn't terrible either, it just had very very very very bad PR.
  21. Game designer publicity photos

Miyamoto ofcourse, because he has a 1up and a shield and a sword.
