That defines the margin on "the best". Sure, BioShock is not Serious Sam: Second Encounter, or Rise of the Triads. But til still belongs on the best FPS games, as there are more FPS games that are much worse.

Idle Thumbs 34: The First Age of Extreme

Fun! I belong to that group that actually wants to finish games. I want to see what the ending is. But it is usually a disappointment. I get the feeling that quite some game devs don't put much work into creating an ending because they know the vast majority will never see it. -
Yep, the 30 euros is also holding me back a bit.

That's awesome, specially the mario bros segment, pure gold.

7 is a harsh score because the lowest score they give out is 5, which is for the huge pieces of shit. It's just pollution of the grading system. We should all convert to the InverseStarâ„¢ rating system.

3x AdvMame3x HQ3x I prefer 3x. This is maybe not the best scene to show (although you can see the scaling artifacts in the text of AdvMame3x, and the missing stars in HQ3x). During the intro you zoom in on a fence, and for the smoothing scalers this fence looks terrible. -
If it doesn't start properly, even from a cold boot (i.e. having it unplugged for a while), then it's fried. If it starts, but doesn't do anything, then either its memory is corrupted, or there's an issue in the connectors. With "start properly" I mean that it powers up, and stays on.

Really? what game+upscaling system produces good results? I usually stick to 3x which tripples the pixels. Absolutely not. That's because the game data is just data. One of the ideas behind Free Software (and also to some degree in Open Source) is that it should not limit usage of the software. It only covers modification and distribution. -

I wonder how they're doing the upscaling. None of ScummVMs soft-upscaling methods produce good results. -

Depends on which variation of the BSD-like license you mean. For example the 4-clause BSD license isn't that great. Anyway, next to public domain the zlib/libpng like license is the most friendly to people/businesses that want to just take the technology and never give anything back. But apparently, not even that is good enough for Nintendo (as you're not allowed to include any Open Source software). A good rule of thumb for (Open Source/Free Software/*) licenses: Ok to use: public domain, zlib/libpng, 2-clause BSD (the one without the 2nd clause), (1) Check with legal-dept: the rest (1) A nice overview is available of licenses which are quite safe to use in any environment are listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_free_software_licenses in the first table licenses with "yes" in both columns are quite safe to use. But remember, that certain licenses require the license text to be included, and some also don't allow you to embed the code within a project (so, you can only use it as a library). For example, the MIT/X11 license requires you to include the license text in the distribution, but you can completely close down the code. The licenses with a "yes" in the left column and a "no" in the right, are more or less safe to use when you use unaltered versions. -

Not really, it's friendlier than various EULAs from propriety software. Because if you are just going to use the software there are no restrictions at all. If you are going to distribute the software you just have to provide the source if requested. If you are going to use the source of the software it will become a bit more complicated: if you are never ever going to distribute the modified software, then there is no issue; otherwise you will need to make your changes to the software available under the same license, and everything that links to the application must be GPL compatible. -

Yeah, groundbreaking. Pretty much every time you landed on a planet with that vehicle thingy.

Assuming they're using ScummVM/DOSbox for some of the games, I'm wondering of they will get a pad on the back from LucasArts. And actually, I find the list of classic games quite disappointing. -
