  1. Ebert doesn't know shit about what I liked about the Indiana Jones movies, or sausages.
  2. I think I know how they could have fixed Crystal Skull. They should have added Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon and rename the movie to Grumpiest Old Men.
  3. Is Social Media Eroding Our Humanity?

I think the cause is that most of the "social media" is about glorification of the ego. Forums/mailing lists/bulletin boards, are discussion platforms. Facebook, Twitter, etc. is about "me" and how awesome people think I am and the shit I post. There is little room, or functionality for discourse. In real world you are not going to say "LIKE!" when somebody makes a remark. You might nod, but your main contribution would be respond with additional information.
  4. Help me remember that movie/book/thing

Sounds like a Terrence Hill movie.
  5. I'm rewatching it now. So many dumb jarjar-like humor in this.
  6. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I walked around for about 90 minutes. I found the same watch tower when I found binoculars. With them I found 2 more lights near a lake which gave me a compass and map. A little bit further I found a fishing rod and eventually a bow and arrow. On the map "bellvue" or something was marked and I walked into that direction, finding various pieces of paper. Eventually I got close to bellvue which was a "city" like location. Instead of trees a lot of metal girders. Eventually I figured out that on those story pieces you could click on a label below it which resulted in a will-o-wisp showing you the next direction of a piece of story about that label. But that got bored too, so I quit after those 90 minutes. I did not know you could get attacked, or even die. I jumped from the watchtower and got injured, but that went away over time.
  7. Nice, looks like the U2415 is a proper update of the U2412M for pretty much the same price (just 10% more expensive).
  8. Al Lowe (and crew) plan to remake the first Larry game: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1451923705/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again This trend is going to become dangerous.
  9. U2412M are very good gaming monitors as their response rate is quite good, etc. See this very detailed review: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm That was my basis to buy my first U2412M. I was quite happy with it and also advised these monitor for work, and a couple of months ago I bought a second U2412M for home because my previous secondary broke. So I've got a 2014 and 2012 (I think). The panels are a bit different, you cannot apply the same colors settings and get the same output. I don't have a color measurement thingy, so I don't know the difference between both monitors. My first U2412M is the same as from the review: 03ppy m3b101 Second U2412M is: 06vfr m3b102 The predefined color settings, and some other settings which you can see in the factory menu are quite different.

Just defeated the final boss in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris It's the sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and just like the previous game it's a isometric, top-down game when you have to run around, shoot, jump and solve some simple puzzles. So, it's more of the same. I do get the feeling that this game was much more geared to co-op, but it's still ok to play on your own. It's a very gamey-game, it's a lot of about completing challenges in the various "tombs". It's not very difficult. The real difficulty is switching between 3 key items using the keyboard. Sure, you can cycle through them with the mouse wheel, but that's not very precise. You often have to switch between the item under key 2 and then to 5. The jumping part has been improved for keyboard controls. As you basically only have 8 directions the times you have to aim between those eight has been greatly reduced compared to the original.
  11. OSX is based on NeXTSTEP which was based on the Mach kernel in combination with some BSD code. There's no Linux in OSX, and less and less GNU or BSD.
  12. The aliens in Crystal Skull are terrible. The whole Indiana Jones universe revolves around documented religious artifacts and their believed mystical powers. The first three movies, and the Young Indy TV series all build upon documented history.
  13. How about these two: SQL and URL Originally SQL was named SEQUEL, but that was changed in the beginning due to trademarks. I've always pronounced is as S-Q-L. It was only a few years ago I first heard a guy pronounce is as sequel. He has worked with Microsoft SequelServer (written as SQL Server), so that's probably the cause. And now I know a few more people who keep calling it sequel. They even call it MySequel. Not sure how they pronounce PostgreSQL. How I pronounce URL depends on the language. In Dutch I pronounce it as "earl", while in English I just say U-R-L. (But for some reason I pronounce URI as "yuri" in both cases).

The foggy plains are rather annoying, not difficult, just tedious. The puzzles to become mre difficult after that. But there's also some other tedious stuff, and an annoying part. Given the length of the game I do recommend giving it another try.

I just completed Mind: Path to Thalamus It's another one of those puzzle walking simulator games telling some kind of emotional story. This appears to be a thing now. This game belongs to the gorgeous looking category, just look at this and this (those are actual screenshots I made). Exploring isn't really needed (a shame with this beautiful world) as it's quite linear in most cases. The puzzles are mostly toggling "switches" with balls. There's a switch for fog, night, rain and time. At some point you need to let the ball roll to reach a switch at a certain time. It sounds easy enough, but some of the puzzles do offer a challenge. It's not a very long game, but a very enjoyable 3~ hours for me. As with the game above, it's also part of the weekly humble bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly

Finished Fract OSC yesterday in more or less one sitting. It's a very stylized game with puzzles. The first part of a puzzles requires you to complete a path by turing/moving elements. The second part requires you to configure a tone generator correctly. The last part can be quite difficult sometimes. You have to walk around to find the next puzzle, which can be quite confusing due to the world design. The world design feels rather random. Then again, it all has the look of a music player visualization. The CRT shader effect is quite awesome though. (zoom in on the grey line and you see what I mean) Fract OSC is in the weekly humble bundle if you pay more than $10 (list price is ~$15): https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly
  17. but GH1 has the part where they create the ghostbusters
  18. Life

irreligious or non-religious would be the word.
  19. Life

Are you people atheist, or actually non-religious? Atheism is just non-belief in a gods, but things like karma still exists within the context of atheism.
  20. General Video Game Deals Thread

I bought Tropico 5, Transistor, How to survive and some Pinball Arcade tables. The lack of a meta game and low major sale update frequency made this a rather boring sale.
  21. Actually, It's about Relocation in Games Journalism

Stop trying to misdirect us. He's the idlethumbs intern, isn't he?
  22. Holy crap what a retarded rule. They are basically bringing the VAT hell from the US here.

Lilly Looking Through A samorost kind of adventure game. It's not really long (<2hr), and there are not a lot of interaction points. Everything that can be touched is significant. There are a couple of puzzles you have to solve in order to go forward. As with smorost, there's no hints so it can take a little while to figure out what to do. The game is really heavy on the animation, some animations take quite a while to complete. It's a bit like a short interactive animation.

Completed MURI It's a classic DOS platform game, think Duke Nukem 1. It plays and feels like a game from that time. Even the music and sound effects are in the classic PC speaker format (PC speaker not needed). The difficulty isn't that high on normal, but you can make it much more difficult if you want. There are 4 episodes, each with 5 levels. You can start from any episode you want. The only thing missing in the game was a CRT emulator to bring back even more of the feel from the early 90s. Is this game better than DN1? No, but it's still fun to play. Note, the install is quite large, you need 3MiB of free diskspace.
