  1. Kickstarter Project Gaming handwarmers

Do you guys not have heating in your home?
  2. Intoxicated:

I can't believe how hated Nicki Minaj is. My first contact with her was from hearing her bit in Kanye West's Monster, which is easily the best part of that album. I tried looking her up but didn't find much I liked. But she is reviled and online her reputation is the epitome of a produced, talentless musician. From that bit in Monster, though, she should be fucking great. Listening to that Kanye video now, the fucker rhymes 'reputation' with 'reputation' four times in a row.
  3. This was the first console generation I bought into (Wii & PS3) only to find out I will only use a console as a media player.
  4. Prison Architect

Hey, sorry I backed away from this conversation. I didn't mean to set it up and leave. From responses to my RPS post, it seems making a peaceful prison is not quite as impossible as I thought. Regardless, I'm not convinced enough thought has gone into thinking about what this game is telling people. You can't really make this game and keep it neutral, without a message. I would like to see stuff like... Say you get a prisoner with a ten year sentence. How fucked up is he going to be after his sentence mentally and physically? Does he get enough exercise and decent food? Maybe he'll die of heart failure before he is released. How is the experience to him mentally? Maybe he'll be out for six months and you'll have to deal with him again. I would love to see some comparisons of prisoners' states before and after. Are there opportunities for education and learning an occupation? There are many issues related to prisons that are deeply interesting. Don't tell me the game can only be 'fun' if prisons in it are Oz-like pits of murder.
  5. Life

There are plenty of interesting historical policeish forces to look at in Wikipedia for ideas.
  6. Prison Architect

I haven't played Rollercoaster Tycoon, but games like Theme Hospital are just nuts along with being cartoonish. None of the diseases are real, crazy stuff happens all the time. That's not what Prison Architect is modeling. The cartoony graphics represent completely down to earth if brutal stuff. There are no whacky escape attempts or hijinks, just rape and murder.
  7. Prison Architect

I just posted this in the comments to an RPS article(http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/11/12/prison-architect-diary/) Tell me I'm wrong, please? Afterwards I looked up some stats online. According to a Slate article, http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2013/06/murder_rate_in_prison_is_it_safer_to_be_jailed_than_free.html, the homicide rate in jail is about 3 to 100,000 inmates, or two thirds of the national homicide rate in the US. There were about 2,266,800 inmates in the US in 2011, which tells us that around 70 people are murdered in prisons annually. There are around 4600 prisons, so the expected chance that someone is murdered in one prison in one year is about 1.5%. Meanwhile, this game (and obviously all prison-centered fiction) would lead you to believe that the only way to stop people killing each other is to chain them up and leave them to rot. EDIT: Oh! Around 100 people were killed in the series Oz over six years, so that prison accounted for about a quarter of all prison homicides for those years. http://bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/pjdc0009st.pdf
  8. Board Games?

You're right of course. It's weird how much people's ways of playing a game differ from the designer's intentions.

I'm hoping that the teacher opted to just write down exactly what your daughter said, not appropriate it by changing the language. I suppose that's optimism. I don't know what kind of education you need to be a pre-school teacher in your state.
  10. Board Games?

That's not what the rules say! The rules say you must pay rent, with 'must' in bold. Merus -- Wrong about Monopoly. Wrong for America. Anyway, I'm using Monopoly in my thesis so I had to go check. You are totally right about the auction bit. The players in my study didn't do that and it takes goddamn ages until the first player can build houses.
  11. I Had A Random Thought...

According to Wikipedia the original was first copyrighted in 1835, which would lead me to believe it's unlikely that copyright would still be worth much. Or people owe Mozart helluva lot of money.
  12. Arma 3 Beta Shenanigans

Hey, thanks for asking me to join yesterday. We were having a romantic night, so I didn't answer... Anyway, I would love to play some night.
  13. PL4YST4TION 4

That's really dumb. The model doesn't have detail for 60,000 triangles, so there's no way to show off the extra detail. If they used a box as an example, there would be no advantage beyond twelve triangles. Also, the image is very small, so we don't see how much better it looks close up.
  14. Life

Seriously, reading that medical stuff makes me scared to even visit the US. What the fucking what.
  15. Learning Languages from Games

    Yes. The English language.
  16. Building a home theater...

    A bunch of these.
  17. Nondescript Adventure Gaming Topique

The Inner World is good, play it.
  18. Building a home theater...

Sure, you can always slap something on that later if you want to. That's... hardboard, apparently.
  19. Building a home theater...

I found this: https://www.carlofet.com/material-comparison-chart Which would lead me to think you want ProGray Stiff Supported Material Low to Moderate Ambient Light Indoor, Suspended or Rolled & Hangs Without Stretching - High Contrast Gray Because it doesn't need tension and has good contrast and tolerates some ambient light. That looked really nice when I pasted it, but not anymore
  20. Building a home theater...

What, that's hilarious I have no idea what you could be referring to. Doesn't the screen have to reflect a bit or something? I don't know what they made movie screens out of, but I'm pretty sure it's not just a regular light gray colour.
  21. The threat of Big Dog

For something that does so little, it sure is huge. It looks bigger than an Arduino.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

I've seen pretty much everything by Kubrick and Cronenberg, but not two of Kubrick's earliest and also not quite all of Cronenberg's. Esp. Kubrick I've also rewatched a lot. You do get a different sense of what makes the director tick.
  23. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

    That Marek.
  24. I love every one of you

    I missed toblix's birthday?
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

The new Turtles animated series is good, judging by two episodes. The one I just saw was an Alien episode with squirrels.
