  1. LucasArts is no more

For that analogy to work for me demands the elderly relative to be replaced by his evil twin-brother at some point of the story. I find it very hard to think of the current recently deceased Lucasarts and Lucasarts of the good old days as the same company.
  2. LucasArts is no more

At first, this news barely provoked a reaction in me, as the company has not produced anything of interest to me in years. Then again many of my absolute favorite games of all time were made by good ol' Lucasarts. Somehow it feels like that company was dead and buried a long time ago already. Very unfortunate news for those working at Lucasarts and those still anticipating their upcoming titles of course.
  3. After all the positive comments, I feel like I should re-read this book at some point. I first read Complete Cosmicomics some 4 or 5 years ago, and I feel like I might appreciate it more now. I may also have to check out if should switch from Finnish to English translation this time around.
  4. I enjoyed If on a Winter's Night a Traveler more than I did Cosmocomics. Our Ancestors (which comprises The Cloven Viscount, The Baron in the Trees, and The Nonexistent Knight) is sitting in my bookshelf, waiting to be read.
  5. Authors in Translation

I read the Hitchhiker's Guide series in Finnish at high school, and only much later in English. Some details are bound to be lost in translation, but the translated work was still very much that of Douglas Adams'. Also, due to a complicated Christmas present mixup, I actually switched from English to Finnish in the middle of Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. It was a strange experience for sure, but after a short acclimation period the text started to feel Vonnegut's again. I've heard that at least some of the translations of Finnish classic The Unknown Soldier are quite horrific, because the different dialects, which were an important part in the book, were handled so poorly. A Finnish translation of The Catcher in the Rye was also criticized for the heavy use of Helsinki slang.
  6. BioShock Infinite

Disappointment of the year 2013. Anyway, I bought the game after watching the GiantBomb Quick Look, despite my hatred for monsters that keep running towards me. I haven't played the game yet, but I like how the benchmark utility opens in cmd.exe, and later the the raw date can be opened in Excel.
  7. BioShock Infinite

It annoys me that I basically can't stand video games where tough monsters are constantly attacking you from every direction, forcing you to be on the move all the time. Bioshock Infinite looks gorgeous and sounds quite interesting, but I don't think I will be able to enjoy the actual gameplay. I want my Bioshock: Dishonored (Biohonored... Disshock).
  8. Audio books

    Hmm.. confusing.
  9. Audio books

Seems to work fine in Finland as well. I assume that "4 days left to listen" for the final episode is a glitch?
  10. Audio books

I listened through a lot of audiobooks a couple of years ago when I was sitting in a pitch black room, performing measurements that required user input every 15 minutes or so. I do that kind of work less often now, and it is difficult for me to find time for audiobooks anymore. Listening to Lolita while playing SimCity worked surprisingly well, though, because the game is so tranquil. Whenever possible, I prefer to read the books myself. That way I have to concentrate on the story, and not on the internet or my emails.
  11. Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube?

Is there any incentive to actually do the work, i.e. to chip away mid-game? Is the gameplay interesting in any way?
  12. XCOM Enemy Unknown

No problem. Depending on how far you have gotten already and how bad your current situation is, it might be easier to just start over. That is, if you want to be sure that you can actually finish the campaign. You may also find some satisfaction in seeing things through to the end on your first playthrough. Like I said, I can't remember encountering any bugs during the campaign, so you shouldn't worry too much about that. There are other reasons to save regularly, though.
  13. Audio books

Lolita is newer than some. (Actually I just missed that part of the post.) I tried listening to The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón but had to give up. I couldn't get past how cheesy the first part was. But it's new!
  14. XCOM Enemy Unknown

Right strategy definitely helps. I don't think I lost any council members during my playthrough. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to know what the right strategy is on your first playthrough. There are a lot of good guides around the internet that you can check out, but here are some pointers: Max out your squad size early on. Keep your experienced soldiers alive: research armor and sacrifice rookies if sacrifices have to be made. At the beginning, you are short on engineers (I think), so choose the missions that reward you more of them (provided that the terror level is similar in all regions). Satellites are very important. Note the adjacency bonuses when building satellite and other facilities. Skip the laser research and focus directly on plasma (some may disagree). A sniper with squad sight, and later double tap, is extremely powerful. I had two of them in my squad all the times and they were constantly saving my asses.

  16. Life

Glad to hear there is progress, tegan!
  17. Books, books, books...

The new cover for Nineteen Eighty-Four is pretty great. That is all.
  18. XCOM Enemy Unknown

Hmm.. I didn't have any problems with that mission. In fact, I can't remember encountering any serious bug during my playthrough when the game first came out. Unless you count the camera which can be a bit annoying in some of the interior scenes. Had all the other soldiers moved? Maybe the tutorial was expecting you to do something with someone else first. Did you eventually get past that point?
  19. You mean a very untalented impressionist? Because they all sound the same! Apparently.
  20. SimCity: The City Simulator

Maxis is offering a functioning city simulator for free by way of an apology: http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/18/4119328/simcity-free-game-origin
  21. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater - Kurt Vonnegut

The Sirens of Titan is $1.99 on Amazon.com Kindle store today! Well worth it if you own a Kindle.
  22. I liked the one where Nick was sleeping the best. It was just the right amount of creepy.
  23. Books, books, books...

Irons reads the whole thing. He changes his voice a bit for Lolita's lines etc., but the way the book is written you can imagine it simply as Humbert Humbert mimicking her voice as he recounts the story. Really well adapted in my opinion.
