Small hint, in case you haven't solved it yet (and don't want to bang your head against a puzzle panel anymore) (I don't remember if this was the first time you have to figure out, or if there were panels somewhere else in the swamp area that better taught you that.) Oh, and the post-it note trick worked well for me. I played for hours without headache, then went back for a bit without bothering to re-attach the piece of paper, and got nauseous pretty fast.

Attaching a piece of paper at the center of my TV seemed to help quite a bit with the motion sickness for me. I'm 8.5 hours in and have unlocked 6 lasers so far. While some puzzles took me quite some time to figure out, I have only resorted to looking up the solution on the internet once. I did not feel too bad afterwards, because... (monastery spoilers)

I played this game before I went to bed, and had a major case of the Tetris effect at night. Combined with the fact that will have to keep my play sessions relatively short due to the motion sickness, I will probably be drawing lines in my dreams for the next couple of weeks or so. I wonder if the developers are working on the motion sickness thing, since it seems quite widespread. Didn't Mirror's Edge solve (or at least try to solve) this by adding a crosshair or something?
-
I think I might be experiencing some motion sickness as well. Much milder than with Quantum Conundrum, though. I'm not exactly sure what is causing it, but I'm assuming it's the lack of guns, since I have no problems with FPS games. Damn this game is pretty! So far the puzzles have been quite pleasant as well. Unfortunately, there are only two achievements in the game, so I cannot with good conscience recommend you buy it.

Well, at least she didn't settle for a gas pumping reference that was right there, and went for a more ambitious oil pumping reference instead.

Just finished it. Scattered observations about the game, the mod, and me: -The game, as I experienced it, was great. The story explored interesting concepts, and the developers had the sense to avoid relying on twists (which the players would have been able to see a million miles away). The setting was wisely scoped, and they absolutely nailed the base and sea floor areas. And holy shit, the atmosphere was amazing. - The Wuss mode absolutely does not ruin the experience. Exploring the base is fucking terrifying even if you know that the monsters won't attack you. These alien creatures wandering aimlessly in the corridors, ignoring you, adds its own special kind of horror to the atmosphere. When you are going through the log entries on a computer and your vision starts to distort more and more, you want to get away, even if you are not in a physical danger. - There is zero chance I would have been able to complete this game without the Wuss mode. There are a couple of scripted scenes where you are still vulnerable, and one of them left my heart racing so fast that I had to take a break from the game. Moreover, avoiding the monsters seems like a tedious mechanic, and I'm quite sure that I would have become frustrated with the game even if I hadn't been scared to death. - My TV really struggles with scenes with lots of grey. So: Great game. Would recommend. If the gameplay puts you off, try the mod.

I bought some comic books after a long stretch of not reading any (except for slowly going through the Hellboy Library Editions I bought a long time ago). I'm currently reading Bitch Planet Vol. 1 and enjoying it quite a bit. I also bought The Wicked + The Divine and The Fade Out volumes 1. Now that Amazon acquired comiXology, I was able to transfer my Kindle purchases over to comiXology. I'm reading the comics on my Nexus 7 and I quite like the Guided View feature. It's not perfect of course, but I prefer it to manually zooming in on the panels and rotating my tablet on two-page layouts. Plus, the transitions between the panels feel quite natural because of all the movies/tv-shows/games where reading comics is presented in that way (which is quite weird actually).

Idle Weekend January 15, 2016: Zombie Train Beyond Earth
Nappi replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
Excellent cast yet again. Waking up late, brewing a pot of good coffee, sitting back, laying my feet on the table, and listening to Idle Weekend has quickly become a Saturday tradition for me. I love the relaxed, thoughtful atmosphere of the show. Keep up the good work! I like Rob's advice on idols (don't have them). You definitely see people trying to defend some inexcusable actions or comments made by people that are remarkable, inspiring, and generally not idiots in some other areas simply because of their status as an idol. I think that is quite natural, though. It is easier to admire and look up to a person as a whole than to admit that they too are only human and to enjoy and learn from only select aspects of their personality. Occasionally, when I come across some scandalous news, I toy with the idea of finding out that one of my favorite artists turns out to be a horrible human being. Would I still be able to listen to their albums? I have never come to any conclusion on that because the thought is too distressing. -
Two wrongs don't make a right, man.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan

Are the Project B.E.A.S.T. guys aware of how brutal the re-entry can be in terms of heat? I have skipped some of the construction sections because they take forever to choose the parts, so I don't know if they know about ablators. I was quite surprised that they survived the re-entry last time because it looked like they did not have a heat shield of any kind. Or did they? I'm not sure if I'd be happy if when they finally manage to save one of the Kerbal, the rescue ship gets destroyed upon re-entry.- 1367 replies

I was staring at the cursor that stubbornly refused to hover over the indicator for closest approach which would have immediately revealed the distance. I wonder if Vinny was aware of that and just refused to check it for the sake of suspense?- 1367 replies

I'm really looking forward to XCOM 2. Perhaps more than I should. On paper at least, the differences to previous XCOM, namely forcing players to move faster by having more timer-based missions and introducing more hard decisions on mission select / base building, sounds like the opposite of what I want out of my XCOM experience. I hope that the tweaks to the system work, though, and that I will be able to enjoy the game, because god damn I want to play more XCOM.

Earth is awesome. I wasn't too excited about the newest album (Primitive and Deadly), but then I have only listened through it once or twice. The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull is my favorite, I think.

Haha.. yeah, I loved watching them fuck everything up already at launch and then proceed to carefully plan their crazy perpendicular orbit rescue mission, only to see the other ship pass by at an incredible speed and realize that perhaps they should match the orbits next time around. I'm still amazed that most of their ship designs survive the launch, though.- 1367 replies

If you are interested in spaghetti western and haven't already watched Sergio Leone films, I'd recommend you to start with Once Upon a Time in the West (worth it for the fantastically ominous train in the opening scene alone) or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The style of those movies is quite different from many of the other works recommended here, though. True Grit was quite good in my opinion. The new one, haven't seen the original. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is absolutely incredible.

Idle Thumbs 244: Heroes vs Villains

Listening to the Giant Bomb Game of the Year casts made me really want to try out SOMA, but looking at the gameplay videos I just know that I'm not going to finish the game ever, because I'm a big baby when it comes to horror games that involve sneaking and hiding (and nothing is going to change that, I feel). I'm still really interested in the story, even if I spoiled some of it listening to the casts (not enough, though, in my opinion). Do you think that the game will still be enjoyable/meaningful, with this mod? https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/01/06/soma-mod-horror/

Cool stuff! I have not been playing around with space planes at all yet. Maybe I should.

Yeah, it seems that the only way to save an unkerbaled ship with no electricity is to mount a rescue operation and either supply the ship with electricity or extend the panels manually during EVA.
-
Grrrr... I send an unkerbaled ship full of science instruments to Eve with an aim of collecting data from high and low orbits as well as at least the high atmosphere. I noticed that my solar panels started to heat up a lot even though I barely hit the top of the atmosphere and quickly retracted them, and quickly collected all the science that I could from the high atmosphere. Then I fast forwarded a lot and the next thing I knew I had no control over my ship due to the batteries being empty. I did not realize that you can't even extend the solar panels in that situation (although it of course makes sense). I don't think I emptied the batteries by spamming data transmissions but gradually through command module and other systems (my orbit extended to Gilly's orbit so who knows how long I left the panels retracted). From now on all my ships will have a couple of non-retractable panels in addition to my main solar panels. I'm also seriously considering offering some brave Kerbal a guaranteed one-way ticket for my next interplanetary trip. Gotta maximize that science. Eve looked cool, though, even if the shoreline was quite pixelated.
