  1. Iron Brigade

First reaction: "Double Fine is making a mecha game? What the fuck?" Still waiting for the second reaction.. Looks surprisingly good graphics wise, though. I hope there is some twist to set it apart from all the other mecha games I haven't played.
  2. Aliens screening 28/02 London

Picking just one of those excuses would probably be more convincing.
  3. Gemini Rue

Repeating the last verb? Could be.. probably is, but it's still pretty useless, in my opinion. I usually look at an object and then try to interact with it (and then repeat), which means that I rarely get a chance to use that double-click functionality anyway. What is more, there doesn't appear to be any way to tell which "verb" you have selected. As far as I can remember in old Lucasarts adventures right-click was mostly for looking but changed to open/close for doors, pull/push for levers and buttons and so on. Made a lot more sense to me.
  4. Gemini Rue

Couldn't figure that out myself either. There was a higher level of context sensitivity already in games like Monkey Island 1.
  5. Gemini Rue

I have only played the demo so far. The graphics are truly beautiful (god I love that pixel rain) and the atmosphere feels spot on. I kinda hope the controls weren't so 90s though. Looking at a thing and then interacting with it shouldn't be that cumbersome. How do the action sequences handle?
  6. Life

I think you are being way too harsh on Kroms.
  7. Life

You lit a 3 year old on fire? You should feel bad. Also, we hate you for that internet suicide thing now. How are things in your country, by the way? The great big eyeballs in the sky all seem to be focused on Gaddafi at the moment. Anyway, I have... um... lets see... I... hmm... that goniom... nope... Yeah no, nothing interesting to report at the time.

  9. We Dare

Also, can't wait for the Giant Bomb Quick Look.
  10. We Dare

I feel bad for the blonde who so clearly feels jealous and/or out of place but still decides to play along in order not to ruin everybody else's evening. The look the guy casts at her before he starts spanking the brunette is very telling.
  11. Back to the Future

Finished the second episode as well. It was very :tmeh:ish. Perhaps still better than the first one. God, I wish I would never have to see the disorienting block surrounding the town square again. The twist in episode 3 does indeed seem very promising. The "laws" of time traveling in Back to the Future series felt very incoherent from the get-go so I decided not to bother trying to make sense of them. Works just fine that way.
  12. If you can somehow find out the GMR read-head thin film stack structure of that fucker, I could maybe point out some basic features from it. Other than that, I don't really think I can help you here.
  13. Back to the Future

Jesus, I guess this is the first time I have played a Telltale Games episode with proper sound system or something. My ears are bleeding blood. And they left the cicadas on for the entire opening again. With 12 new Telltale Games games coming out this year it's probably safe to assume that they will keep on not working on these issues and reduce the amount of QA further. Which is a shame, and could hurt sales through me not buying their every game anymore. I haven't played enough to comment on this episode, except for one thing: Cover mechanics? Really? Edit: this post was overly negative.
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

Go for it. Adaptation is great and the plot isn't at all hard to follow even though it might seem like that at first (if that was what you meant).
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm exaggerating, of course. There were some very strong scenes, however, and the grim weirdness of the world it pictured certainly had an effect on me back then – the naval mine scene, for instance, will stay with me for the rest of my life. Perhaps part of the reason why the movie was so effective was that an innocent child™ was tossed into that world. For the same reason Tideland was the most nauseating movie experience I have ever had. City of Lost Children is a very pleasing movie by comparison. Without a comparison as well as a matter of fact.
  16. Recently completed video games

It is pretty amazing how forgettable the two "normal" human team members – especially Jacob – were. I don't think it has to do with "Ohh, this one has gills! Interesting!" sort of thing either. But I guess you have to have some sort of reference point to which you can compare all the other characters. I agree with most what has been said here. Jack bothered me surprisingly little and I was happy that she was gradually able to drop most of the "bitch" and just focus on being a kick-ass biotic. Miranda was very poorly realized and her lament that she was "made perfect" could well be seen as Bioware criticizing themselves for the monster they have created.
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

That was the first Jean-Pierre Jeunet film I watched. I was something like twelve and it almost traumatized me for life. Nevertheless, I loved the film back then and still do after having watched it again quite recently.
  18. Movie/TV recommendations

Delicatessen! Most heartwarming movie about I have seen in a while. It's such a shame that it feels somehow out of the ordinary to find an interesting movie that is not mostly if not completely pervaded by cynicism. Yeah.... I know.
  19. Mass Effect 3

Yes. Now that I think about it, the atmospheric soundtrack was one thing in ME1 that I preferred over ME2. I loved Moon soundtrack, though, and have high hopes for ME3.
  20. The Last Express

Better make that two hours. I started playing this yesterday and spent most of my first hour figuring out which way I was facing and so on. Not being able to fully control your movement can be very disorienting apparently. Nevertheless, the game is quite charming. I'm starting to get what is going on even though I haven't bothered to listen to all of the conversations and read all the newspapers. The game has its flaws though and because of its "realistic" nature the immersion can shatter quite easily. For instance, during the concert
  21. Plug your shit

I actually like the contrast between the imagery and the narration. Fucking hate everything else, though. Kidding. Excellent work there Kingzjester!
  22. I thought I'd better not reply anymore because everything I say seems to get mangled at some point. I posted the Vonnegut quote because I felt it somewhat fitted with what Hermie had said just before and related to the discussion as a whole. In my opinion, you then misinterpreted what (I think) he was trying point out, mixing actors and whatnots into it all. Mother Night is about an American playwright who ends up as a Nazi propagandist in World War II. He is actually a spy who occasionally passes information to the Allies in his propaganda broadcasts. But he is still, and I think this is what Vonnegut was referring to, a Nazi propagandist: He says horrible things, he acts like he believes in what he is saying and makes others believe in those things as well. He makes some people hate him and other people hate another group of people. In Mother Night the protagonist has to face the consequences of his actions because, after all, those are his actions. No matter how different he thinks he is in his heart of hearts, his actions still make him a Nazi propagandist to every other person in the world. A malicious computer virus is still a malicious computer virus even if its code contains nice private functions that could clean up your Windows registry just right. Someone who says racist things all the time is still, for all intends and purposes, a racist even if he reveals to his best friend that deep down in his heart, he isn't. A billionaire who keeps giving shitloads of money to charities is a philanthropist even if people say he is just doing it because of the guilty conscience of being so wealthy. This is what I tried to clear in my second post, but you somehow interpreted it as me implying "Jim is a horrible monster". I wasn't implying that at all, not least because I don't know anything about Jim. I wasn't, of course, implying that actors or comedians are horrible people either just because of their role on-stage (and honestly, I didn't even think you could interpret my post like that.) However, if a comedian acts racist or misogynist on-stage and off-, inciting hatred and making people feel like crap and not explaining that he is being sarcastic, then there is not much difference between him and a "real" racist/misogynist, isn't there? Like I already pointed out, there is a world of difference between "people being what they seem" and "people being how they act". You claiming, based on the little I had said so far, that I don't believe "people can put on a horrible persona without being horrible" was a bit too much for me. I still don't see where you got that. I even highlighted "all the time" for you in one of my previous posts. Of course people can put on a horrible persona without being horrible. My whole point is that if he keeps that persona on all the time, then the people around him see and interact with the persona and it becomes meaningless to even call it a "persona" anymore. Futhermore, making people feel horrible just for the sake of making them feel horrible is horrible even if you are not doing it all the time and to everybody. Anyway, I think one of the biggest reasons the discussion turned this ugly (and I'm sorry if that was in some way, my fault) was the insistence that someone agrees with someone and disagrees with the other one and that the discussion was about this versus that. I didn't even read the entire thread because I didn't find a couple of people trolling each other all that interesting. I never agreed or disagreed with anybody specifically or took sides. I certainly didn't disagree with you. I actually didn't even argue with you; in fact, all the posts after the first one have been dedicated to making my view more clear to you and making sure you wouldn't misinterpret me. In this, I of course failed miserably. And there was an hour of my life..
  23. Really? What you got out of all this was that I don't think people can put on a horrible persona without being horrible? This conversation is clearly now worth continuing.
  24. Yes, as Miffy said I was referring to the "people are what they act to be" kind of view and definitely not the "people are what they seem" thing, which I didn't even notice in this thread. There is a big difference. I can heartily recommend Vonnegut, Miffy. His my favourite author of all time. The Sirens of Titan, Cat's Cradle and (of course) Slaughterhouse Five are probably my top three, but all of his books I have read so far have been excellent. Edit: Well put brkl.
