  1. Just got half way through this film... The person holding the camera is called Hud right? Was that meant as a play on H.U.D.? Other than that, I thought it was alright so far. Trying to ignore the niggling feeling that the battery on that camera lasts for an impressively long time.
  2. Fantasy Zone - I'm missing something

I wish I could be encouraging but between Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on the Megadrive, Fantasy Zone on the Master System and Gun Valkyrie on the Xbox I have been brought close to tears, to the point where I think that I might have been tempted to give up gaming. Fantasy Zone is great but I would recommend spending a little time playing something peaceful and easy then playing it for a bit then when you die don't do what I did (I had to buy a new MS controller). I would consider myself a twitch gamer and I still had problems with it.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

Wow, Really? Dazed and Confused - Feel good 70's based film that I highly recommend you see, nothing happens but it is great. People are getting together for this party and it follows different people as they get ready for it. Lots of drinking and smoking, accompanied by hypothesing about random stuff (Gilligan's island, people's future, shagging etc). It is probably Matthew Mchonaughey's best film(please note he is not the main character). Before Sunrise and Before Sunset - Very talky, but nice in the sense you get a really good feeling about how the two people play off of each other and it feels more realistic than most romantic dramas. The Newton boys - Don't watch this, no one else did. It isn't bad just wholy generic. Suburbia - The one that Linklater did has Giovanni Ribsi and Steve Zahn in it, it is set around around a convenience store, tons of talking and it definitely has a 90's feel to it. I really liked it as it reminded me of my wasted youth. Waking Life - A lot of the techniques from A Scanner darkly were used here first. Really good film (if a little pretentious in places) and it has a lot of theories on the ideas behind life and death (plus a cameo from the characters in the 'Before' series) I think he also did School of Rock, I didn't bother watching that.
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm a little out of date but I finally watched Fast Food Nation and was quite impressed with it. It was weird seeing Richard Linklater try his hand at this as it wasn't any where near as wordy as some of his other films. Greg Kinnear is good and the appearance of Avril Lavigne didn't spoil it. I also finally watched Intacto properly and that was pretty damn good apart from the filming of it, I can't put my finger on it but it felt like it was made for TV, albeit a really good TV film.
  5. Sorry I can never get over seeing the 'Administratively raped' tag on first time posters that are spamming threads.
  6. Michigan: Report from Hell

The game seemed to be a bit like Night trap on the Mega CD, meets Pokemon snap with a bit of point and click involved in it. You have to aim at the mutants/alien things to get the reporter to fight them and also get good shots of stuff happening, like people getting killed (or not). I liked the concept but the guy who carries the boom mic is constantly babbling about stuff and he got a bit annoying. I must stress that I wasn't actually playing and that can often affect how I feel about plots. I would say that if you can pick up for cheap then it you won't have wasted your money entirely as it does make for a great conversation piece (I pulled it out of mate's collection and went 'What the f**k?' He then put it on and we chatted about it and the comparisons with other games, the beer flowed freely).
  7. Dawn of War 2

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl as soon as I get my hands on the copy. Z just took awhile of getting used to, it was why I liked it because you had to completely relearn how to play the RTS as the last thing you could do was sit back and wait as one was accustomed with Command and Conquer and Dune.
  8. Crowd control - Eurogamer article

This is true of Bladestorm Wrestle (as in it isn't as pure as the rest of the franchise), it is really made for the people who have been playing the Dynasty Warriors franchise for nigh on 8 years and want something a little different. Bladestorm plays like a more accessible Kingdom under fire: The crusaders. And although not as over the top as DW there is a satisfaction in taking control of a cavalry unit and completely routing a bunch of unworthy swordsman; or seeing that your club men are about to get destroyed by cavalry and instead you grab hold of some nearby pike men to annihilate their charge. Historically mind boggling (mongol archers on horse back, in the 100 years war??!!?) but fairly good fun. Gundam Musou... It is good but you have to be a fan of both series to fully appreciate it. DW3 is now dated (but was the best) so I would recommend DW6 as another good entry point into the series on a non-handheld console. There are 5 difficulty levels in total in EDF, easy, normal, hard, hardest and Inferno. I'm trying to beat the final level on both Hardest and Inferno, I've got over 5000 health and all but 3 weapons. The final boss which is relatively easy on all the other difficulties is frigging impossible on the last two difficulty settings. Some of the creatures (fear the spider splooge) can still one shot you when you have 5000 health. I'm still trying to grind level 40 for health and possible weapons. EDit: Maybe that thread should get ressurected? I've since played Beautiful Katamari to death and have played a few new XLA titles that were pure gold... Also now that the PS3 and Wii have had a little more time to add to their libraries there must be some stuff worth recommending on those platforms now?
  9. Uwe Boll: I'm a genius

This maybe true, but it is like Uwe Boll never expected to make any money out of it. He even went as far as hiring most of his family and friends to do the work so that he could cut costs. I'm not saying he was the only one to do this it is just that his films are so deliberately cheap and bad that there is no justification in him being able to exploit this loop hole. Postal was pretty bad but I enjoyed it at least for what it was, pure rubbish. Whereas his other films are just painful as they really did try and take themselves seriously
  10. Crowd control - Eurogamer article

It is split screen Co-op only. Like Miffy says, that makes no difference it is just great from the get go. In the Video Gaiden special awards episode, EDF gets nominated for best game of the year. EDF 2017 was also in top 100 games, both voted for by the staff and by the readers in the Eurogamer polls. Also this is the game that several people I know bought 360s to play (I'm not joking one of my friends owned a copy before he owned a console to play it on). So yeah, it is under 15 quid in England so there isn't much excuse not to play it. If you play it on some of the later levels on Hard you will need a teammate, I'd even recommend one for some of the later levels on Normal. Also worth mentioning: Bladestorm The hundred years war. It is much better than I had hope for. It deviates a little from the normal button bashing frenzy of DW but with Kingdom under Fire turning into a diablo clone it gave me my action strategy fix.
  11. Michigan: Report from Hell

Haha... I can't remember the name of it but it was published by D3 (thems of the Earth defense Force fame) and only released in Japan. I didn't get to play it but from the back of the box it seemed to have been purely designed for game playing teenagers who still watched Baywatch and that couldn't buy/download real porn yet.
  12. PS3 lurgy

This went up on Eurogamer about some of the recent updates bricking PS3s if they aren't done properly: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=131209 Just thought anyone with a PS3 and a shaky Internet connection for it should be advised.
  13. Michigan: Report from Hell

Yeah, the idea is actually really sound and it has a fair bit of replayability as you try and get more of the reporters to survive. I think there's one that always dies as part of the plot (but my mate reckons there is a way to save her too). However, the plot is retarded. Sorry couldn't be more helpful but I've only ever seen one copy and that belongs to this guy who has every weird import you can imagine (he has a game where you have to fly a helicopter and follow a giant, bikini wearing woman).
  14. Uwe Boll: I'm a genius

I agree with Dan on this and would go one step further. Uwe Boll is particularly odious because a lot of his films were made through exploiting a subsidy option in Germany. This means that he was leaching money out of the government that could have gone to a worthier project. Although, I have now see Postal... It is in the realm of so-bad-it-is-good that I'm willing to forgive it. Blood Rayne, House of the Dead? Pure, unfiltered sewage.
  15. Michigan: Report from Hell

I actually know someone who has a copy of this... It is a bit rubbish to be honest.
  16. I'm really glad...

See Nick says that, but he will never be able to escape the banner that was bestowed upon him a long time ago... Nick you know what I'm talking about, think of 'Return of the Jedi'. I don't know it is weird, I've never been humbled so many times in the presence of strangers it is nice to see people talking about stuff without it degenerating into a bunch of shit slinging. Better yet, if it does then it usually is a result of some one being completely out of line. Met Spaff and a bunch of the guys while working at Babel and started visiting this forum regularly. Have made forays into other forums and it is littered with PS3, Wii and X360 apologists. Here it seems that people are more interested in games than whether they are on a specific platform. Makes it very healthy.
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

Well he would say something like Seingfeld inspired it. Sorry, you are right they didn't buy the franchise and remake but they did intend to make Friends for an English audience. I have a friend who worked on the program and the original premise was 'Friends, but racy... And funny in an English way'.
  18. Dawn of War 2

Okay, this is going to sound a little out of place but please hear me out. After talking to someone about how DAwn of War works it got me to thinking about an old Bitmap brothers game called Z. I have an original copy of it somewhere but I'm pretty certain it won't run on any current PC (it is DOS based if I remember correctly). Does anyone know where I can download a version that would work on a current PC (legitimately would be great but, you know)? I have an aching to play it again. Trying to keep my PC as game free as possible or else I will never get any work done but I would really like to revisit some old classics like Z.
  19. Consolidation is good

I wouldn't mind the consolidation so much if it wasn't that it is Activision and EA who seem to be grabbing up the properties. EA are a machine, they schedule their games for Alpha, Beta, submission candidate and Gold months before hand and don't like to delay their products one bit. Happier instead to buy out whoever they need to to get them released. Activision aren't quite as bad but then that is like saying Geuring didn't seem quite as maniacal as Hitler.Or that John Goodman isn't as fat as John Candy was. If consolidation was done to strength weaker companies (ex: SCI and Eidos) then I don't have any objections. Instead we are seeing a couple of the large companies monopolising everything and potentially stifling creativity. I was quite looking forward to MErcenaries 2, now that it is under EA supervision I can't be bothered to even rent it when it comes out.
  20. So...

Have a cracking hangover after drinking Kamenitza (cheap local beer) all night. I'm trying to book a train to Bucharest, buy a bunch of extra clothes I need and not fall asleep (it is 10AM and I already want to go back to bed). Other than that I'm having a right old laugh.
  21. Is it wrong...

I recently overcame my affliction when it came to accents. I used to find strong Brummie overtones tantamount to some one stabbing me in the ears. My advice, get really drunk and find out how many pints it takes before you don't mind. If it is greater than 12 then it probably isn't worth pursuing. Mainly because you'll be too bladdered to do anything about it.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

Actually the biggest irony is that it has happened in the most stupid of ways. Friends was so popular that they converted it into 'Coupling' (rubbish but better than Friends). Coupling was popular enought the Americans then tried to make an American version of Coupling, it failed miserably.
  23. Feature: Shhh: Sounds of Silence

In relation to someone having a soundtrack in their head/suit there is this great little sci-fi book that I read (despite not being much of a Sci-Fi fan) called 'Red Robe' it was about a guy with a hyper intelligent gun and how he has to go to this weird religious planet to kill someone. At one point a chip was installed into his head that monitored his brain patterns and played corresponding music to whatever his physical/mental state was. When it begins you discover that the chip is broken and he doesn't hear the music anymore, a fact that is making him increasingly depressed. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/c/jon-courtenay-grimwood/red-robe.htm Slightly off topic but the speculation on music made me think of it.
  24. They don't like it up 'em!

I particularly liked the comments section because the almost completely polarised opinions of all the posters. I can't tell who is more wrong.
  25. Feature: Shhh: Sounds of Silence

Liked the article alot. It is something that I think that Bioshock does very well in places: No music except for incidental sounds. It is also why I rate Halloween 2 almost over Halloween 1 as sound management in that film is fantastic. Was the music that invasive in Gears? I remember finally reaching the mansion and there being a great 'quiet before the storm' moment as you run back out of the secret room only to have the locust at the front door. Admittedly they were a bit heavy handed in a couple of other places (the sound effect that played when you had cleared an area). Can't remember where but I went to a talk about this on understanding the power of silence and it resonates just as importantly in games. Also Ben, the use of the waltz in 2001: A space oddyssey was an accident. The story goes that Stanley Kubrick was playing some records he had gotten for free and he was listening to it while he was editing 2001. Some sychophants started saying that the music was perfect; best choice he could ever make. He was surprised but listened to it for a bit longer and decided they were right.
